A Field Guide is required to guide guests, on foot and by vehicle, providing a holistic safari experience, and actively assist the Safari Management with the administrative operation of departments and mentorship/leadership of the field guides.
KEY FOCUS AREAS
- Follow all procedures for maintaining the overall operation of the Guides and Safari department, including individual, family and kids safari experiences, safety, excellent guest and staff relations, hosting of guests, and all equipment, vehicles, and assets.
- Perform all Field Guide functions according to the standards of FGASA and the company Guiding culture, including guest introductory and safety orientations, guided game drives and interpretive bush walks, tracking, identification of spoor, delivering informative lectures on relevant ecological topics, and drinks stops and other bush events.
- Be available for all game drives, back-up drives, and stand-by duties as directed.
- Practice proficient and safe weapon handling as directed.
- Contribute to the lodge social media platforms, ensuring consistent delivery of relevant and appealing information with the broad aim of increasing knowledge of the wildlife and operating area.
- Assist with incident handling in the event of emergency / evacuation, including medical emergencies, fire, and flood.
- Ensure all guest information available is collected and communicated prior to arrival.
- Collect guest information while speaking to guests; inform the Management to record and act on guest preferences.
- Ensure all guest complaints are reported to your Head of Department/Management immediately.
REQUIREMENTS - QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- FGASA Nature Site Guide NQF4 and Trails Guide qualification
- ARH and Rifle Proficiency, First Aid Level 1, Drivers License and Pr-DP.
- Previous experience as Field Guide at a Luxury Safari Lodge
- Knowledge on the applicable / relevant property and company procedures for the department, according to the standards of FGASA and the company Guiding culture.

Lodge: Madikwe Hills Lodge br>Reporting to: Head Field Guide
Job Purpose:
To provide guests with a safe, informative, and memorable safari experience through guided game drives, bush walks and related interpretive activities, while ensuring the conservation principles and the lodge's high standards of guest service are upheld at all times.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct daily game drives in a safe and professional manner. 3 Hour drive in the morning and 3 hour drive in the evening.
- Deliver engaging and educational information about wildlife, ecosystems, conservation, and local culture.
- Perform routine vehicle and equipment checks, reporting any issues promptly.
- Host guests at dinners (Field Guides host guests every second night, every boma night, and every night the guide has a single travel agent in camp)
- Maintain radio contact and follow all safety protocols during activities.
- Walking safaris (bush walks) when requested by guests. Where required have not yet been obtained, a competent guide will accompany you to build up your hours.
- Pick up and drop off of guests. Taking luggage to guest rooms. Adherence to Fedair runway regulations.
- Monitor and report unusual wildlife sightings, poaching signs, or hazards to relevant parties.
- Assisting to emergency maintenance
- Assisting guests with night calls (eg: emergencies, removing insects or wildlife from rooms)
- Assisting with children entertainment and activities at Little Madikwe
During periods that no guests have been allocated to the Field Guide
- Assist the maintenance manager with any maintenance tasks to be done
- Assist the HOD with bush clearing, week sheets, electric fence and / or vehicle maintenance, when required.
- Go out with other guides and learn / teach from each other.
Minimum Requirements
- FGASA Field Guide (NQF2) or higher
- Valid South African PDP (Public Driving Permit)
- Valid driver's llicense (Code 8/EB)
- Minimum 1 - 2 years' experience as a guide in a Big 5 environment is preferred
- Excellent communication and storytelling skills in English (additional local languages an advantage)
- Physically fit and able to conduct walking safaris
- Good understanding of conservation and ecological principles.
