The role:
The role is for effective acquisition of geological data for the operation, enabling geological modelling and reporting and identification of any problems related to geological features.
Responsibilities will include but not limited to:
- Promote safety through participating in high level SHE reviews, recommending appropriate actions where necessary, keeping abreast of SHE industry best practices and ensuring communication to all stakeholders
- Manage geological data acquisition to ensure data integrity and enable geological modelling of the coal seams
- Underground and Opencast qualities and contamination control and reporting
- Planning and managing of all field work required to produce a high standard of geological input
- Identify and communicate geohazards such as seam rolls, faults, sills and dolerite dykes
- Reconciliation of coal qualities and geological data
- Delivering and managing an annual budget that represents best estimate of costs and supports the attainment of the organization and business unit's financial objectives
- Coordinate exploration drilling and associated activities
- Contractor management and drill rig co-ordination/allocations
- To provide support to the mine to ensure resource planning, grade control and other activities are conducted according to standards and best practices
Requirements:
- BSc Hons/BTech in Geology
- Professional registration as a Natural Scientist with SACNASP
- Minimum 3 years' experience in the Geology field, preferably coal mining experience
- Exploration and production experience in both, opencast and underground mining
- Knowledge of mine planning and metallurgy
- Experience with Geological modelling software like, but not limited to: Minex/Geobank, MineScape, MicroStation
- Knowledge of relevant mining legislation incl. Mine Health & Safety Act, Minerals & Petroleum Resources Development Act
- Understanding of risk assessment processes
- High regard to Safety, Regulations and Standards
- Result orientated – timely delivery of results
- Strong people abilities
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Reporting writing skills
- Analytical skills
- Flexible – operate successfully across disciplines
- Computer literacy (MS Office, Geological Software)

Job Description
-As our Geometallurgist of your responsibilities will include but not limited to:
- Function as a role model and support a workplace culture where safety and health for the site are paramount.
- Support an environment for team members to challenge and act on unsafe behaviours without repercussions.
- Keep environmental impact within statutory requirements to ensure compliance with statutory requirements is met.
- Active participation in VFLs, Risk Assessments and close-out of Safety Actions.
- Performance and Delivery
- Geometallurgical data gathering:
- Assist the Senior Exploration Geologist in planning a spatially representative geometallurgical sample acquisition campaign.
- Generate geometallurgical borehole data by ensuring that the Kumba Geometallurgical protocol is catered for in the exploration programme and overseeing that sampling, sample preparation, and test work for geometallurgical purposes are conducted according to the protocol by performing the required QA/QC checks.
- Capture geometallurgical borehole data in relational geometallurgical tables in the borehole database.
- Geometallurgical data analyses:
- Analyse geometallurgical data to understand statistical and spatial variability.
- Correlate proxy results (usually generated on-site) with laboratory test results to establish relationships to enable subsequent time and cost-efficient generation of metallurgical point data.
- Structural mapping and data acquisition:
- Deposit scale structural data acquisition from inside the Sishen pit and regional and local maps/aerial photographs.
- In-pit measurement of structural information such as joint sets, faults, folds and bedding monthly.
- Capturing structural geology data from core exploration boreholes.
- Structural interpretations:
- Deposit scale structural interpretations in a 3D modelling software package like Leapfrog to define the structural controls for ore distribution.
- Ad-hoc Projects:
- Assist with geosciences-related development projects.
Assist in generating input required for projects generated by Kumba Iron ore, which can, in the future, complement the operation's bottom line and act as the liaison between the Project Team and the Geology Section on site to provide geological input per project schedule.
This role is in Discovery & Geosciences (GEO) NC department on a band 6 (D1) level reporting to the Section Manager Exploration & Geometallurgy
Qualifications
- -Grade 12
- Relevant National Diploma NQF6
- B Tech /B-Degree: Geotechnical (NQF7) – Advantageous
- Advanced Certificate
- SA Drivers Licence (CodeEB/E)
- Registered with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) would be advantageous.
Technical Knowledge
- 3-5 years of experience in Production and Exploration Geology.
- Possesses a solid understanding of Geometallurgy and Structural Geology.
- Knowledge of project management, from initiation to completion.
- Familiar with mapping techniques and borehole data analyses.

Senior Resource Geologist
to lead Mineral Resource estimation, geological modelling, and (as needed) exploration advisory across multiple commodities (gold, PGM, copper, iron ore, coal, industrial minerals). - Conduct Mineral Resource blockmodeling
