The role:
The role is for effective acquisition of geological data for the operation, enabling geological modelling and reporting and identification of any problems related to geological features.
Responsibilities- Promote safety through participating in high level SHE reviews, recommending appropriate actions where necessary, keeping abreast of SHE industry best practices and ensuring communication to all stakeholders
- Manage geological data acquisition to ensure data integrity and enable geological modelling of the coal seams
- Underground and Opencast qualities and contamination control and reporting
- Planning and managing of all field work required to produce a high standard of geological input
- Identify and communicate geohazards such as seam rolls, faults, sills and dolerite dykes
- Reconciliation of coal qualities and geological data
- Delivering and managing an annual budget that represents best estimate of costs and supports the attainment of the organization and business unit’s financial objectives
- Coordinate exploration drilling and associated activities
- Contractor management and drill rig co-ordination/allocations
- To provide support to the mine to ensure resource planning, grade control and other activities are conducted according to standards and best practices
- BSc Hons/BTech in Geology
- Professional registration as a Natural Scientist with SACNASP
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in the Geology field, preferably coal mining experience
- Exploration and production experience in both, opencast and underground mining
- Knowledge of mine planning and metallurgy
- Experience with Geological modelling software like, but not limited to: Minex/Geobank, MineScape, MicroStation
- Knowledge of relevant mining legislation incl. Mine Health & Safety Act, Minerals & Petroleum Resources Development Act

HGL is currently seeking a mid-level Geologist to join our team in St. Louis, MO. Our project office in Hazelwood, MO is dedicated to supporting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP) involved in the remedial cleanup of low-level radiological contaminates in the St. Louis area. Responsibilities/Duties
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
The person hired for this role will be responsible for:
- Reviewing/evaluating environmental data; including aerial photographs, topographic maps, and analytical data for the development of soil sampling work plans.
- Oversight of field team for the collection of soil and creek sediment samples utilizing various sampling techniques.
- Ensuring field operations are conducted in a safe manner in accordance with project specific Site Safety and Health Plans.
- Evaluating/interpreting environmental data and developing contamination contours.
- Development of written reports summarizing environmental data and final assessments of results.
- Providing geological support for remedial excavation activities.
Required Skills
WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL
The ideal candidate will need the following as a foundation for success in this role:
- BA/BS in Geology, Geological Engineering, or Environmental Science.
- 0-5 years of directly related experience.
- Previous experience with environmental investigations utilizing various soil and sediment sampling methodologies.
- Must be able to work in a construction-type environment and manage multiple projects concurrently.
- Experience with drilling, logging, and sampling of environmental borings; developing/reviewing/interpretating of geological boring logs.
- Proficiency MS Office, including MS Word and MS Excel is required.
- Experience with ArcGIS.
- Effective oral and written communication, presentation skills, and the ability to complete projects independently and / or in small teams.
