The Research Foundation of the City University of New York (RF CUNY) invites applications for a full-time Research Associate in Dr. Jessica Rothman’s Wildlife Ecology and Nutrition laboratory at Hunter College as part of a NASA funded project entitled “Mega impacts of Megaherbivores: unraveling the role of rhino restoration in fire-savannah dynamics”. The successful candidate will conduct field research and use remote sensing tools to assess the before-and-after eosystem effects related to rhino reintroductions in Zimbabwe, South Africa and Uganda in line with grant activities, as well as use existing data. The position is expected to last for 1 year as per the grant award, but is initially funded for 6 months.
Other Duties- Use pre-existing field datasets from Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, South Africa, to examine how rhinos create and maintain grazing lawns along a productivity (rainfall) gradient.
- Map the distribution of grazing lawns using the above datasets to understand the relationship between rhinos and their habitat combining data with remote sensing imagery at different spatial and spectral scales (30 m and 60 m resolution).
- Provide technical and logistical support for field work in Uganda and Zimbabwe, which includes tracking rhino movement and feeding ecology of individual rhinos.
- Use NASA databases including PlantScope/Harmonized Landsat-Sentinel, to link rhino movement and feeding ecology with changes in grass biomass from field collected data in the first year.
- Procure a large database with information on ungulate communities and densities (specifically white rhino) in reserves across South Africa.
- Link the above database on rhino densities across South African reserves with remotely sensed indices of fire intensity and grass-layer heterogeneity.
- Contribute to analyses and manuscript preparation for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

OVERVIEW:
The Department of Molecular Genetics in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto invites applications for the position of Research Associate (Limited Term) to design and lead research projects in the area of microbiology, functional genomics, chemical genomics, and antimicrobial drug resistance. Specifically, the program will focus on the molecular mechanisms by which metabolic flexibility controls virulence traits in fungal pathogens.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates require a Ph.D. and a minimum of five (5) years of postdoctoral/research associate experience with demonstrated academic and research expertise in the field of mycology, genetics, genomics, and molecular biology.The incumbent will design and lead research pertaining to several projects in the lab focused on functional genomics, chemical genomics, fungal pathogenesis, and antimicrobial drug resistance. Extensive experience working with pathogenic fungi, including Candida albicans and Candida auris, is critical as is demonstrated experience with large-scale genetic mutant screens and mutant construction. Candidates must have experience with C. albicans molecular biology and biochemistry, including chromatin immunoprecipitation, monitoring transcript levels, epitope tagging, protein purification, purification of mitochondria, and assays of mitochondrial function. Experience leading interdisciplinary work is critical, as is experience collaborating with structural biologists, computational biologists, and chemists. Candidates must have experience preparing manuscripts for submission to peer review publications/journals and assisting with preparing research proposals to be submitted to granting agencies. Candidates must have experience presenting findings at meetings and conferences. Candidates must have experience designing, planning and executing experiments and research. Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills are required, and candidates must be able to work positively with others and mentor trainees in a large collaborative laboratory.
KEY DUTIES
- Designing, planning and executing research projects.
- Designing and constructing mutants for functional genomic collections.
- Performing assays that include but are not limited to: cloning, PCR, qRT-PCR, electrophoretic analysis, protein and enzyme assays, microbial transformations, drug resistance testing, screening mutant libraries, and functional and chemical genomic assays involving genome and barcode sequencing analysis.
- Reading published papers relevant to the experiments being performed and adapting procedures accordingly.
- Liaising with collaborators and assisting in the compilation, analysis and reporting of research findings to researchers within and outside of the program.
- Assisting with preparing manuscripts for submission to peer review publications/journals.
- Assisting with research proposals to be submitted to granting agencies.
Beyond these responsibilities, the individual may be expected to participate in research supervision of two or more students or other trainees. At all times, the individual is expected to support the overall research and training missions of the lab.

UNU-WIDER is in the process of setting up a joint research, policy and capacity-building programme with the National Treasury (NT) of the Republic of South Africa that engages key local and regional institutions and aims to help achieve economic transformation and inclusive growth in the Southern African region.
A key area of work in this programme is to conduct policy-relevant research on public revenue mobilization on the South African tax system. The programme will make available the tax administrative data collected by the South African Revenue Service (SARS) for use as a tool in economic policy-making and integrate further the various micro-level databases available in South Africa.
UNU-WIDER is looking for an outstanding individual with strong commitment and potential to support this programme. The position is based at NT or SARS in Pretoria, South Africa.
ResponsibilitiesUnder the supervision of the Director of UNU-WIDER, the Research Associate will perform a key role in creating, maintaining, and updating administrative tax data from South Africa, and making it available for researchers. The Research Associate will:
- create and manage micro-level databases
- update databases on a regular basis to incorporate the latest relevant available data and variables
- generate manuals describing the process of updating the databases, including basic descriptive tables and figures and analysis of data quality
- ensure consistent use of the datasets within the programme
- actively explore new micro-data sources
- participate in data projects that involve the comparison of data from tax records with data from other sources
- assist researchers in accessing the data, answer their queries, and run computer code and extract results as needed for non-South Africa-based researchers
- communicate regularly with programme stakeholders on specific data requirements
- ensure that secure computers used for accessing the data are up to date with computing power and statistical software
- assist in a scoping study on remote data access and its possible implementation
- assist in drafting research studies and management reports
- perform other duties as requested by the supervisor.
- a minimum of a master’s degree in economics, statistics, or equivalent social science, with a minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience
- demonstrated ability to independently carry out, create, update and manage databases
- required knowledge of computer programme languages, especially Stata; knowledge of other computer programming languages — in particular R is an advantage
