Job Description
The key function of this role is to provide basic metallurgical support for metallurgical engineers and TCS engineers in customer complaints, product development, and plant engineers.
Job Specification:
- Receipt, preparation, and metallurgical testing and evaluation of samples as required under the supervision of the senior engineer, metallurgical services, and development.
- Liaise with the originators requiring the work, and with mechanical testing laboratory workshop and analytical laboratory personnel on a daily basis.
- Operation of mechanical saws, guillotines, shears, grinding, and polishing equipment for preparation of samples.
- Adhere to set standards when preparing etching solutions and examination.
- Ensure correct sample preparation techniques and microscope set-up to enable accurate metallurgical evaluation of samples.
- Operation of laboratory heat treatment furnaces, laboratory hot and cold rolling mills, and building and operating a 20kg charge induction melting furnace for making experimental alloys.
- Calculate alloy additions to the melting furnace to result in the correct chemical composition of experimental alloys requested by the senior engineer.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- National Diploma in Metallurgy.
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a relevant position.
- Knowledge of steel/stainless steel products and/or smelting/refining of other materials.
- Working experience in heavy/large manufacturing processes related to steel manufacturing, quality assurance, and control.
- Working knowledge of laboratory systems and basic equipment is required.

Job Summary Provide support services in the operation and maintenance of an academic or research laboratory to include performing analyses; setup, operation, maintenance and cleaning of equipment; and maintaining stock of supplies. Setup, operate and maintain instruments and other equipment used in performing lab tests and experiments.

Order supplies and materials as required; maintain records.

Setup laboratory media/equipment for demonstrations.

May clean instruments, glassware and other lab equipment.
Job Duty 5 -
Prepare and process laboratory samples for use in assigned tests.
