The Renewable Energy Project Engineer oversees the planning, design, and execution of utility-scale renewable energy projects (50MW+), ensuring technical compliance, cost efficiency, and timely commissioning. Key Responsibilities
1. Project Development & Feasibility
- Conductsite suitability studies (solar irradiance/wind resource assessments usingPVsyst/WindPRO ).
- Designlayout optimization for solar tracker/wind turbine configurations.
- Preparetechnical specifications for EPC tenders (modules, inverters, BESS).
- Reviewsingle-line diagrams (SLDs), civil/structural designs , andgrid connection studies .
- ManageBOP (Balance of Plant) contractors for roads, foundations, and MV/HV infrastructure.
- OverseeSCADA and performance monitoring systems (Sungrow, SMA, Siemens).
- Ensure compliance withNRS 097-2-1 (Grid Code) andNERSA licensing requirements .
- Coordinatepower flow studies with Eskom/IPPs for grid connection agreements.
- Implementreactive power control andlow-voltage ride-through (LVRT) solutions.
- SupervisePV module installation/wind turbine erection per IEC 62446/IEC 61400.
- Leadenergization tests andperformance ratio (PR) validation .
- Resolvesnag lists for practical completion sign-off.
- Interface withlandowners, Eskom, DMRE, and environmental consultants .
- Report progress to investors/lenders (includingIndependent Engineer reviews ).
- BEng/BSc in Electrical/Mechanical/Renewable Energy Engineering .
- Professional Registration: ECSA PrEng/PrTechEng (preferred).
- Certifications:
- PV GreenCard (SAPVIA) for solar safety.
- GWO (Global Wind Organisation) certification for wind.

Technical Skills
- Renewable Tech Expertise:

Your Key Responsibilities will include:
- Develop detailed project execution plans to ensure successful delivery of projects. Work collaboratively with the Client and Arup team. Manage and coordinate the integration of technical activities to enable Arup to achieve its objectives.
- Ensure projects deliverables comply with design standards, legal regulations, environmental standards, and necessary permits. Identify potential project risks and devise mitigation strategies. Maintain relationships with stakeholders, including governments, local communities, suppliers, contractors, and team members.
- Ensure Arup delivers quality services to our clients. Implement quality control measures to ensure project standards and performance objectives are met. Oversee and report on the project’s progress to senior management and stakeholders.
- Technical knowledge in the energy sector. Ability to consult with others to develop the level of knowledge required for the role. Utilise the company’s knowledge network to adopt best practices in approach to work. Identify own training and development needs, ways to meet these needs and share knowledge with others. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Capable of prioritising and managing own workload using appropriate tools. Acknowledges and acts upon the need for additional support from team members.
- Articulate, providing clear explanations of ideas, job procedures etc. to others. Capable of working well with people at all levels. Ability to involve all members of the team in delivering objectives; professionals and support staff.

Key Responsibilities
KRA 1: Lead the development of off-site (wheeling) power projects in South Africa
- Formulate the decision gating framework for YDE wheeling projects in South Africa suitable for solar, wind, and BESS asset installation
- Work with current and new land developers to maintain a pipeline of potential project sites
- Use framework to prioritize project sites based on the needs of the business, MW capacity, interconnection availability, permitting status, etc.
- Negotiate the acquisition of the preferred sites
- Work proactively with the business development team to ensure our develop reflects the MW scale, location, and type of power needed by our current and future customers
- Leverage the capabilities of the Project Management team for the permitting, interconnection agreements, and EPC/O&M arrangements
- Leverage the capabilities of the Design team for yield and costing of each project site
- Ensure that all development is future proof considering possible regulation changes
- Ensure that all development is future proof, and that sites generate the highest returns possible by minimizing the levelized cost of power from each site
- Take an active role in all relevant negotiations in the development phase including EPCs, advisors’ fees, etc.
- Identify projects risk, recommend solutions and feedback to executive management.
- Provide valuation and due diligence guidance to YDE’s CFO and corporate finance team.
- Actively participate in networking activities, building relationships with potential new customer and identifying opportunities for the business.
- Acts as the project or market champion within YDE, leading all aspects of the business and project development from the initial stages through order entry
- When required, hire team members to support responsibilities
- Provide regular updates on project progress as required by managers and YDE leadership
- Provide support to annual planning including development budgets and timing of Capital Investments
KRA 2: Ensure all projects are strong investments approved by the IC
- Work closely with the legal and finance team to ensure all developments are bankable long-term investments
- Work with the Risk team to develop an Investment Committee package that includes the formal IC paper as well as a presentation to explain the broader benefits and risk of all projects
- Support Board/IC presentations on the developed projects
KRA 3: Communicate and promote YDE in the South African market
- Leverages networking opportunities, social media, industry events, and cold outreach to uncover opportunities and turn them into long-term partnerships.
- Establishes key relationships with industry and thought leaders, creating strategic awareness in the market.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business, Energy Policy, Renewable Energy, or a related field.
- 8–10 years of experience in project development within the renewable energy sector (solar, hybrid and/or energy storage).
- Proven track record in land acquisition, permitting, and interconnection agreements.
- Strong understanding of South African energy regulations and market trends.
- Experience in stakeholder engagement , including lenders, regulators, and government entities.
- Financial modeling proficiency , with experience supporting investment committee approvals.
- Strong negotiation and project management skills.
- Master’s degree in Business (MBA), Finance, Renewable Energy, or Energy Policy.

As a Project Engineer: Wind Energy, you would be responsible for the following:
- Responsible for the general day-to-day technical project management of the relevant projects.
- Drafting Employers Requirements/Specifications (and other contractual schedules) which are well integrated with the turbine supply, installation, and service contracts.
- Negotiation and finalization of supply, installation & service contracts (commercial, technical, and legal aspects, latter in conjunction with legal teams).
- Leading the technical interface between the various work packages (finance, legal, technical, permitting, grid connection, etc.) necessary to fully develop the projects.
- Lead the consideration of technical options of the projects, identifying optimal solutions from a technical, commercial, and execution perspective at an early stage including civil, mechanical, and electrical aspects of wind plants, interconnection, high-voltage design, and yield assessments.
- Realization of technical and commercial analysis of proposals, recommendation for the selection of the supplier and model.
- Ensuring technical compliance with project documents.
- Coordinating the procurement process of contractors to perform services under the relevant EPC and O&M agreements.
- Coordinating and managing the procurement of technical advisors (owner’s engineer, etc.).
- Interfacing with owner’s engineer (OE), sponsors legal advisors, and lenders legal and technical advisors (LLA & LTA), contractors, lenders, etc. during financial close process and construction.
- Optimization of design and pricing parameters.
- Manage the Contractor design review process during concept and detailed design (in consultation with the OE).
- Provide technical input for financial close of successfully awarded projects.
- Maintaining the project time schedule.
- Meeting tight deadlines and keeping within budget.
- Technical, contractual, and operational management of wind turbine supply, installation, and service contracts.
- Prepare management presentations and generate periodic reports with the progress status of the company's projects.
- Technological & commercial horizon scanning of wind OEMs/products.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives via market intelligence and LCOE reduction initiatives.
- Monitor the installation of the wind farms in collaboration with the construction teams, verification of the proper application of the supply and installation contracts in the field and follow-up of inspection and test procedures.
- Monitor on-site commissioning of wind turbines and SCADA.
- Technical coordination with asset management teams.
- Participation in the improvement of procedures.
- Such other duties that may be required from time to time within the general scope of the position.
