The Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Sustainable Energy. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, with an anticipated start date ofJuly 1, 2026 . The successful candidate will be appointed to one or more Departments in the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, depending on their area of specialization.

The successful candidate, upon formally accepting the offer of a full-time faculty position, would be nominated for the Lawson Chair in Sustainable Energy for a five-year term, which will be renewable following a favourable review. The successful candidate will contribute to building the university’s expertise in sustainable energy. We are particularly interested in researchers that take a broad, cross-cutting approach to sustainable energy technologies, rather than focusing on a single solution.

As an internationally recognized chair in Sustainable Energy, the candidate will play a critical role in the Lawson Climate Institute (LCI), working with the institute leadership to identify opportunities, set research priorities, generate impact by developing practical approaches to energy transition and achieve breakthroughs in sustainable energy.

Candidates must hold a PhD in an area related to energy,and have a clearly demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. The Chair will be solution-focused and responsible for innovating and driving solutions that transform energy systems.

We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance the existing strengths of the Faculty . As the Lawson Chair in Sustainable Energy the candidate will:

  • Collaborate with, and build, the community of LCI Scholars and Chairs
  • Seek academia-industry-government coordination
  • Grow the research capacity across the university in the area of sustainable energy
  • Enable measurable outcomes for communities, industry, academia and government.

Candidates will have an established international reputation and will be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research, and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, as well as strong endorsements from referees. Your job will be versatile and dynamic: one day you will be with your boots on, inspecting a construction site when the other day you will be behind your PC screen analysing the expected yield or fine-tuning a PV design.

In this role, you will be delighting our clients (developers, IPPs, banks, investors etc.) with your projects under construction follow reporting, design and technology review, energy yield estimations for utility scale solar PV or wind projects while gradually getting trained in performing feasibility studies, either from the office or during site inspections.

Your main tasks will be:

  • You will perform technical feasibility studies.
  • You will manage the project and oversee its progress from start to finish.
  • You will manage the project under construction and provide follow-up reporting.
  • You will review contracts and overall project design, technology, and suggest potential improvements.
  • You will perform the energy yield calculations using industry-recognised software tools and internal tools and processes.
  • You will report to clients and lenders.
  • You will perform site inspections before, during and after construction of the projects.

  • You have a Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent through experience (Master's degree is a plus)
  • You have a minimum of 2-5 years of relevant experience.
  • You are familiar with technical due diligence on SOLAR/BESS and/or WIND projects.
  • You are familiar with reviewing and specifically experienced with PV EPC, O&M, PPA and Wind turbine contracts review (EPC, WTG supply contract, O&M, PPA) , as Lender’s/ Owner’s technical advisor.
  • You have experience working with Lenders and IPP's (Independent Power Producers).
  • You have experience with technical solar and/or wind turbine inspections construction monitoring.
  • You have been involved in both feasibility studies and project execution phases, including technical assessments, performance analysis, and system optimization.
  • You have strongoverall computer skills and the ability to learn multiple software tools.
  • You have a critical mind and are able to question ideas and assumptions.
  • You have very good organizational skills and are able to manage multiple jobs simultaneously, on time, budget and quality.
  • You have the ability of conveying information in a clear and concise way and adapting your communication style to suit different types of audiences.
  • You are fluent in spoken and written English.
  • You have an affinity and interest for everything related to renewable energy.
  • You have a valid working permit in South Africa.

What gives you extra points:

  • Previous experience in a consultancy firm.
  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Knowledge on PVsyst, AutoCAD, PVCase, WindPro, DigSilent, Homer …
  • Available for short trips abroad.
  • Other languages are a plus (e.g. French, Portuguese).
