The ideal candidate will have a strong background in corporate and commercial law, with specific experience in energy, infrastructure, or construction sectors. This is a dynamic opportunity for a legal professional looking to work on impactful projects in clean energy.
Responsibilities- Draft and respond to claims from contractors
- Provide legal advice on corporate governance and Companies Act compliance
- Draft, review, and negotiate legal agreements (e.g., EPC, O&M, land options, leases, share purchase agreements, NDAs)
- Provide legal support across project development, financial closings, and operations
- Manage joint venture agreements and structuring with partners
- Oversee legal compliance for debt and equity financing agreements
- Liaise with external legal counsel when required
- Maintain loan agreement compliance and assist with project closings
- Support the business with legal risk management and contract strategy development
- Ensure legal alignment with business growth in the energy and infrastructure space
- Admitted attorney with a minimum of 5 years' post-articles experience (PQE) at a reputable law firm
- Proven experience in corporate and commercial law
- Background in commercial litigation advantageous
- Exposure to construction law (FIDIC) and / or energy-related projects preferred

The Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Sustainable Energy. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, with an anticipated start date ofJuly 1, 2026 . The successful candidate will be appointed to one or more Departments in the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, depending on their area of specialization.
The successful candidate, upon formally accepting the offer of a full-time faculty position, would be nominated for the Lawson Chair in Sustainable Energy for a five-year term, which will be renewable following a favourable review. The successful candidate will contribute to building the university’s expertise in sustainable energy. We are particularly interested in researchers that take a broad, cross-cutting approach to sustainable energy technologies, rather than focusing on a single solution.
As an internationally recognized chair in Sustainable Energy, the candidate will play a critical role in the Lawson Climate Institute (LCI), working with the institute leadership to identify opportunities, set research priorities, generate impact by developing practical approaches to energy transition and achieve breakthroughs in sustainable energy.
Candidates must hold a PhD in an area related to energy,and have a clearly demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. The Chair will be solution-focused and responsible for innovating and driving solutions that transform energy systems.
We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance the existing strengths of the Faculty . As the Lawson Chair in Sustainable Energy the candidate will:
- Collaborate with, and build, the community of LCI Scholars and Chairs
- Seek academia-industry-government coordination
- Grow the research capacity across the university in the area of sustainable energy
- Enable measurable outcomes for communities, industry, academia and government.
Candidates will have an established international reputation and will be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research, and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.
Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, as well as strong endorsements from referees. Candidates must also provide evidence of their research impact via policy, industry and/or civil society. The research statement should indicate how the work will result in energy systems transformation.
Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with required materials outlined below), as well as strong letters of reference.
