Job Description
The Maintenance Technician is responsible for, including but not limited to, preventive maintenance, breakdown maintenance, planned maintenance, servicing, refurbishing, installation activities on all mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, instrumentation related equipment and civil maintenance related tasks on buildings/ facilities and sites.

Maintanance
- Implement, maintain and ensure adherence to preventative maintenance program for plant equipment, machinery and other related facilities

- Maintain, repair, refurbish and service plant equipment/ spares including but not limited to pumps, motors, cables, compressors, belt press, valves, drive unites, chemical feeders, pneumatic equipment, hydraulic systems, gearboxes, motors, etc.
- Install plant equipment including but not limited to mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic instrumentation, etc.
- Maintain accurate records on preventative/ breakdown/ planned/ unplanned maintenance activities and utilise as input into stock maintenance system
- Adhere to OHSA regulations and requirements with regards to safe work practices/ procedures including but not limited to confined space/ pressure vessels/ switching gears/ working at heights/ isolation of equipment and other regulations as required
- Make recommendations and actively participate in making modifications/ improvement initiatives for equipment to ensure optimum productivity, efficiency and utilisation or equipment
- Install/ change/ fix water/ steam/ air/ hydraulics/ pneumatic pipelines, valves, and other mechanical and electrical equipment
- Compile/ interpret drawings, blueprints, schedules, schematics and diagrams for a variety of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, instrumentation related tasks as and when required
- Perform various riggings/ slinging tasks related to the installation/ removal/ replacement or equipment including but not limited to mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, instrumentation related equipment.
Breakdown Maintenance
- Perform root cause analysis to identify the root causes of breakdowns/ failures and take corrective action to fix equipment/ parts to ensure that equipment is up and running as quickly as possible and put preventative measures in place to eliminate/ mitigate future breakdowns of the same nature
- Develop, implement and maintain a breakdown maintenance tracking/ recording system, analyse data and make recommendations with regards to preventing/ eliminating breakdowns
- Repair/ replace mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, instrumentation, electrical equipment/ equipment parts as per relevant standard operating procedures, safety rules and regulation and equipment/ supplier requirements
- Perform ore-start checks, start-up, set-up, shutdown, isolation, safeguarding, and other procedures relating to the maintenance of machines/ equipment as per relevant standard procedures, practices, policies
- Record breakdowns and problems with the equipment/ machinery/ parts and update relevant maintenance record systems
- Adhere to OHSA regulations and requirements with regards to safe work practices/ procedures including but not limited to confined space/ pressure vessels/ switching gears/ working at heights/ isolation of equipment and other regulations as required
Preventative Maintenance
- Plan and schedule daily assigned work orders/ job cards and prepare relevant materials/ equipment/ tools/ consumables to perform relevant jobs/ tasks
- Assist in the development/ implementation of planned preventative maintenance schedules
- Perform preventative maintenance tasks on equipment including but not limited to mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, instrumentation, electrical, etc. equipment
- Take appropriate actions to prevent equipment breakdowns including but not limited to preventative maintenance on mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, instrumentation, etc. equipment to eliminate/ mitigate/ minimize equipment breakdowns/ failures
- Implement and maintain records relating to inspection and monitoring tasks on mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, instrumentation, etc. equipment to pro-actively identify potential faults/ problems/ issues, etc.
- Perform scheduled/ frequent checks/ inspections/ tests on mechanical, electrical/ pneumatic/ hydraulic/ instrumentation, electrical, etc. equipment to identify potentially/ existing defects
- Identify/ implement equipment/ process for improvement s and cost reduction initiatives to ensure optimal production effectiveness/ cost effectiveness/ efficiencies/ equipment availability and equipment utilisation
- Perform any other tasks related to the furthering of business interests tasks/ activities/duties delegated to you
- Identify/ maintain optimum availability of consumables/ spares/ equipment and communicate to the relevant store person and ensure critical spares and other consumable stock holding is sufficient
- Perform all first line preventative maintenance tasks on the mechanical, electrical. Hydraulic, instrumentation, welding or machining
Planned and maintenance
- Develop, implement and execute planned maintenance activities/ tasks with regards to routine maintenance, servicing and refurbishing of equipment mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, instrumentation, electrical, etc. equipment
- Prioritise planned maintenance activities to ensure minimum disruption to production processes and optimal equipment utilisation and availability
- Compile project plans/ schedules with regards to the servicing/ refurbishments/ planned replacement of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, instrumentation, electrical, etc. equipment
- Develop, implement and maintain a planned maintenance tracking/ recording system, analyse data and make recommendations with regards to frequency of servicing/ planned replacement/ refurbishment of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, instrumentation, electrical, electrical, etc. equipment
- Routine maintenance tasks related to cleaning, inspections, preventative maintenance, planned maintenance schedule and first line maintenance in equipment/ buildings/ facilities
- Assign and ensure completion of planned general maintenance tasks such ass painting, welding, soldering, repairing, lubricating, cleaning, etc. and monitor quality of completion of tasks
- Ensure that planned maintenance activities are budgeted for and planned maintenance activities are conducted with the budgetary constrains and in line with overall maintenance plan
- Monitoring and ensuring compliance to relevant legislation e.g. certificated of compliance, firefighting system, electrical installations, etc.

Job Purpose:

Facility Maintenance:
Perform general maintenance tasks such as basic plumbing repairs, painting, and minor building upkeep
Ensure all walkways and work areas are free from obstructions and hazards
Assist with the setup and dismantling of equipment or workspaces as needed
Report any facility-related maintenance needs or safety concerns to the Engineering Manager
Inventory and Parts Management:
Assist with receiving, organizing, and storing maintenance parts and supplies
Conduct periodic inventory checks as directed
Notify the Engineering Manager of low stock levels
Ensure proper labeling and identification of all stored items
Safety and Compliance:
Follow all safety protocols and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times
Identify and report any unsafe conditions or practices immediately
Participate in safety training sessions as required
Assist in maintaining safety equipment and ensuring its proper functionality

Possible Tasks within this Role
- Repair faulty equipment and parts i.e. welding guns, servo-pneumatic valves, transmission modules, tucker guns, sealer equipment to ensure availability of spare parts and equipment (spare part management).
- Resolve robotic electronic communication faults by adjusting the robotic program to prevent re-occurring robot communication faults and ensure uninterrupted production process.
- Analyse, fault find, repair and optimise sealer, toxing, welding, laser, bolting and rivet joining technology equipment failure to ensure achievement of quality requirements and efficient production process.
- Analyse PLC programs to resolve errors and determine root causes of Interbus or Profinet network errors, determine corrective actions to continue with the Production process and ensure uninterrupted Production run.
- Fault find, set up and program SEW drives by using the appropriate diagnostics software/tools such as Movitools, Motion Studio to ensure uninterrupted Production run.
- Modify, update and improve diagnostic software on HMI to identify the faulty equipment to facilitate speedy resolution to Production stoppages.
- Analyse and investigate severe or reoccurring Production stoppages to determine the real root cause of the stoppage and determine the appropriate preventative action and counter measure to ensure that the reoccurring of the fault are eliminated and/or prevented.
- Contact equipment suppliers and technology experts within the VW Group to enquire regarding solutions to complex equipment problems and failures to ensure pending or reoccurring faults are eliminated or prevented.
- Document Production stoppages, severe breakdowns, problem sheet, Knowledge Management System, TPM Sheets and PM schedules to ensure all maintenance activities are documented, distributed and knowledge is retained, made available and utilised to prevent future stoppages or breakdowns.
- Conduct root cause analysis of all breakdowns immediately after completing the breakdown, by analysing the situation, causes, countermeasures and actions, ensuring that all is recorded and reported on required control sheets and documents.
- Ensure that the robot Safety circuit is in good working order and that all the required condition that meets the safety standards is installed.
- Download robot and PLC program backups to ensure quick recovery of the facilities in the event of a loss of data
Qualification requirements
- A National Nated Diploma/ National Diploma/ B Tech/B Eng./ B Sc. Degree in Electrical Engineering/ Mechatronics.
Experience needed - At least 5 years in vehicle manufacturing maintenance and/or industrial technical environment

- Able to read E-Plan Electrical and Pneumatic drawings

Minimum Requirements:
- National Diploma, S4, N4-6 in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, or successfully completed a trade test (red seal) in any of the above fields.
- A registered industrial maintenance technician or in the process of acquiring registration with the LPGASA (Electrical qualification will be advantageous).
- A minimum of 3 years working experience in the petroleum industry, preferably LPG industry.
- A strong knowledge of unit operations e.g. cylinder manifold, vaporisers, storage tanks and fittings.
- A good knowledge of all relevant legislation that impacts on the Operations and HSEQ functions, e.g. OHS-Act and all SANS regulations impacting on the LPG industry.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
To effectively manage and minimise the risk associated with depot operations by ensuring:
- Compliance with all HSE Policies, rules, guidelines, and legal requirements within the area of responsibility.
- Promotion of a safe working environment and positively contributing to the company’s HSE KPI’s.
- Assisting regional depots with technical non-conformances related to One Maestro.
- Performing maintenance work safely – on time and to required standard and quality (with reference to the SANS regulations).
Key Results:
- Document client site inspections and breakdowns with supporting photos of the inspection/breakdown. Document to be forwarded IMMEDIATELY to the Snr maintenance engineer/maintenance Engineer/planner for record keeping.
- Ensure customer queries are actioned timeously as per SharePoint log. Maintain regional open queries to less than 10 and not older than 2 weeks (within reason).
- Ensure depot non-conformances are actioned within allocated timelines as far as reasonably practical.
- Ensure client and depot planned maintenance are actioned as per legislative/OEM/Best practices frequency requirements.
- Inspect Totalgaz installations on a regular basis (at least annually) and report any non-conformances to be rectified.
- Ensure proper storage of recovered assets along with new and revalidated equipment.
- Ensure good stores/workshop management by maintaining housekeeping and proper storage of equipment in an orderly manner.
- Liaise with suppliers and contractors pertaining to maintenance spares and work done on Totalgaz depots and consumer installations.
- Ensure that correct equipment related to maintenance work is procured and installed.
- Assist with technical training of staff and clients on Totalgaz filling depots.
- Submit monthly reports of the following by no later than the 7th of the new month:
- Vehicle kilometer report
- Outstanding works report
Challenges:
- Rapidly developing small subsidiary leading to resource and control difficulties.
- Difficult local LPG market with influx of rogue operators (leading to problems e.g. HSEQ, Cylinder Management).
- Abuse of equipment by customers resulting in frequent callouts.
- Manpower and budget constraints i.e., development and project work.
- High turnover of client staff places increased risk of incidents, frequent training necessary.
- Lack of experienced LPG maintenance contractors.
- Lack of in-house technical staff.
