Vector’s vehicle fleet includes a food industry first in ‘multi-temperature’ vehicles enabling the company to service business across frozen, chilled and ambient temperature zones on a single delivery.

Job Purpose

To perform skilled maintenance, installation, repair and inspection work on complex refrigeration equipment, inspection and maintenance of fire defence systems, inspection and general facility maintenance, racking systems, standby power generators and electrical switch gear.

Key Responsibilities

1. Install refrigeration equipment and systems.
2. Inspect systems and their components to ensure safety and identify necessary repairs and to provide an ongoing programme of preventive maintenance.
3. Diagnose problems and/or failures in refrigeration systems to identify equipment and/or systems repair and replacement needs.
4. Perform routine and preventive maintenance as needed and/or assigned to ensure the ongoing functioning of refrigeration systems.
5. Test components using electrical, mechanical test equipment.
6. Charge and leak test the refrigerant charged systems.
7. Perform pre-start up checks on equipment and adjust as necessary.
8. Lay-out and install reference points for determining equipment location.
9. Prepare documentation (e.g., records of refrigerants, paperwork, logs, time and materials, specifications, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support in compliance with regulations and/or conveying information.
10. Repair various items, systems and/or components to ensure that equipment is available and in safe working condition.
11. Facility maintenance of the warehouse and administration buildings.
12. Inspection and repairs of fire defence systems.
13. Inspection and maintenance of standby power generating equipment.
14. Inspection and maintenance of electrical switch gear.
15. Coordinate with Operations management, administration and other members of the maintenance team to complete projects/work orders efficiently.
16. Inform the Regional Engineer regarding procedures and/or status of work orders for the purpose of providing information for making decisions, taking appropriate action and/or complying with health and safety regulations.
17. Assist other maintenance personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
18. Maintain tools and/or equipment to ensure the availability of equipment in safe operating condition.
19. Respond to emergency situations during or after hours to resolve immediate safety concerns.
20. Transport various items (e.g., tools, equipment, supplies, etc.) to ensure the availability of materials required at job site.
21. Dismantle malfunctioning systems, analyse and test components, using electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic testing equipment.

Implementation of Safety Health Environment, Risk and Quality (SHEQ)

1. Implement and comply with health and safety procedures.
2. Ensure that documentation required within the Total Integrated Management System (TIMS), is applied consistently within scope of function.

Stock Control

1. Complete a spares requisition once spares have been drawn from stores in order to have the buyer procure and replenish stock.

Assistant Guidance

1. Guide, train and coordinate the functions of the technical assistant and handyman.

1. Take ownership and accountability for tasks and activities and demonstrate effective self-management in terms of planning and prioritising, and self-development.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience Required for the Job

Qualifications and Experience

1. Valid Code EB drivers’ licence.
2. Matric supplemented by an approved apprenticeship programme in industrial refrigeration.
3. Authorised refrigeration practitioner Cat B8: Ammonia.
4. 3 years’ experience in the repair and maintenance of industrial/truck refrigeration equipment.

Our client requires the services of a Refrigeration Technician to lead and supervise the maintenance and servicing of all refrigeration units.

Key performance areas:

Installation, maintenance and servicing:

• Carry out cabinet installations as needed
• Repair cabinets and service cabinets
• Responsible for correct completion, signing and stamping of job cards and delivery notes by customer representatives
• Make decisions on site about the service or maintenance of the units
• Ensure site is clean when maintenance is completed
• Carry out duties in strict compliance with Health and Safety standards
• Responsible for the reconciliation of expenses related to jobs
• Minimize and avoid job recalls
• Supervise all technical staff on site
• Responsible for the good conduct of staff at clients
• Ensure all staff wear corporate clothing and are well presented

Maintain and care of company assets:

• Plan maintenance of vehicles
• Complete logbook for vehicle
• Ensure safety of staff and products while driving and parked
• Ensure vehicles are always clean and in good condition
• Ensure safe keeping of tools at all times
• Liaise with customers on site in a professional manner
• Ensure customer satisfaction on completion of task

Provide in-house training and support:

• Provide technical assistance and support to service partners and assistant technicians
• Assist with monthly stock takes
• Ensure that Helpdesk receives all documentation on time and complete.
  

The successful candidate must have:

• Matric with a Commercial Refrigeration Mechanic Trade Test will be advantageous
• At least 3 years relevant working experience with air-conditioning or refrigeration servicing
• Safe Handling & Gas Certification will be advantageous
• Computer literate – (Word, Excel and Outlook)
• Must have excellent communication skills (both written and verbal)
• Must have working knowledge of Health & Safety requirements
• Must have great interpersonal skills
• Must have a valid driver’s license
• Must be willing to be on Standby

• 2 to 4 years experience in refrigeration maintenance, preferably in a food processing or cold storage environment
• Working knowledge of HACCP and food safety standards
• Ability to work shifts and perform standby duties as required

• Conduct daily inspections of ammonia refrigeration systems, including plant rooms, condensers, and valve stations.
• Perform preventative maintenance and assist senior technicians as needed.
• Carry out daily temperature and rack setting checks across various markets.
• Operate lifting machinery when required, ensuring safe and compliant use.
• Maintain strict adherence to safety protocols, including HSE standards, PPECB compliance, and cold chain procedures.
• Manage administrative responsibilities such as filing, quote requests, material orders, and purchase requisitions.
• Ensure job cards are completed accurately and within required timeframes.
• Provide support to the Maintenance Manager in executing specific tasks.

• Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent qualification.
• Ammonia Refrigeration Certificate (Category A or higher).
• Minimum of 4 years' experience in electrical and mechanical maintenance.
• At least 2 years' hands-on experience in an ammonia refrigeration environment.

• Ability to maintain discipline and uphold safety and compliance standards.

• Perform routine maintenance on HVAC systems, including chilled water plants and chillers.
• Carry out inspections, servicing, and repairs of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
• Respond promptly to breakdowns and service callouts.
• Diagnose faults and conduct troubleshooting on chillers and refrigeration systems.
• Commission new air conditioning and refrigeration installations.
• Ensure all work complies with company SHEQ standards and ISO procedures.

• Matric or N3 Technical Qualification
• Trade Test Certificate Refrigeration Mechanic (Industrial)
• Minimum of 2 years experience in HVAC/Refrigeration systems
• Valid Code 08 Drivers License
• Clear criminal record, with ongoing compliance
• Safe Handling of Refrigerant Certificate advantageous
• Experience working with chillers and chilled water systems advantageous
