Job Description

Reports to the Nursing Services Manager

Responsible for the facilitation of teaching and learning of the theoretical and clinical component in a clinical setting

Integral part of the Critical Care team with the primary focus of bed side teaching through demonstration, job shadowing, role modelling mentoring and guidance at the bedside of all processes

The integration and mitigation of risk management at the bedside will be a primary objective to reduce risk to the group and improve patient outcomes

Current registration with SANC as a Registered General Nurse or equivalent qualification.

Postgraduate diploma in Medical/Surgical Nursing: General or equivalent as accredited by SANC

5 years proven work experience in a multi-disciplinary Intensive Care Unit including Cardio Thoracic, Neurosurgery, Vascular, General Surgery and Medical is essential.

Postgraduate diploma in Nursing Education or equivalent as accredited by SANC

Assessorship certified

A working knowledge of Trauma, Midwifery and Paediatrics

Knowledge of scope of practice of all Nursing categories as well as the regulations of the SANC

Previous experience as an educator / facilitator /mentor would be advantageous

Excellent communication skills

Excellent interpersonal skills, organisational and problem-solving skills

Commitment to initiate and implement continuous improvement projects

An established interest in staff development

A critical aptitude with regard to patient quality care

Driver's license / own transport

  • CLINICAL SERVICE DELIVERY: Within the PICU and 16 hours per week commuted overtime. Provide comprehensive, high-quality pediatric critical care clinical services. Conduct ward rounds/ multidisciplinary clinical meetings, Morbidity and mortality meetings. Manage and effectively/efficiently use allocated resources. Effective and efficient administration of clinical services. 
  • TEACHING: Undergraduate & post graduate students, nursing staff, rotating registrars / medical officers and senior registrars. 
  • RESEARCH: Participation in existing and conducting new research projects within the department and stay abreast of clinical developments. 
  • ADMINISTRATION: Liaising with Hospital management and the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health

Minimum Education Qualification

  • Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Sub-Specialist in Paediatric Critical Care or Paediatric Pulmonology.

Experience

  • Grade 1: None after registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in Paediatric Critical Care.
  • Grade 2: A minimum of 5 years’ appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA (or recognised foreign Health Professional Council in respect of foreign qualified employees) as Medical Specialist in Paediatric Critical Care. 
  • Grade 3: A minimum of 10 years’ appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA (or recognised foreign Health Professional Council in respect of foreign qualified employee) as a Medical Specialist in Paediatric Critical Care.
