The Department focuses on developing critical conceptual skills and an in-depth understanding of the discipline of Psychology. Responsibilities
The incumbent will be expected to:
- Engage in teaching, curriculum development, and co-ordination of programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
- Supervise postgraduate research commensurate with the post level;
- Conduct research commensurate with the level of appointment and actively contribute to the Department’s research profile;
- Perform academic and administrative duties as determined by the Head of Department;
- Participate in the Department’s strategic initiatives (including transdisciplinary engagements) relating to teaching, research, and community engagement.
- A Master’s degree in Psychology;
- The equivalent of 2 years’ tertiary teaching experience, including block and/or temporary teaching; or relevant professional/industry experience;
- Evidence of research productivity (e.g. publications in peer-reviewed journals, chapters in peer-reviewed books; published conference papers; or equivalent recognised research output; significant progress in PhD studies).
- Proven ability to lecture in at least two, but preferably more, of the following areas: introductory psychology, biological psychology, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, psychological assessment, social psychology, abnormal psychology, developmental psychology, critical psychology, community psychology, research methods.
- A PhD in Psychology;
- A research focus aligned with departmental thematic areas;
- Lecturing experience at tertiary level;
- Experience in supervising postgraduate research;
- Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a psychologist, registered counsellor, or psychometrist.
- A comprehensive and updated Curriculum Vitae

- Certified copies of qualifications
- A brief self-evaluation indicating how they meet the requirements of the position
- A brief outline of completed and current research activities , as well as envisioned future research
- Envisioned contribution to the Department

Job Description
The Department offers various modules at the undergraduate level, and it also offers a comprehensive broad-based Honours degree as well as two coursework degrees at the Master’s level. These latter coursework and mini-dissertation programmes lead to registration as either a Clinical or Counselling Psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). The Department of Psychology also offers a Master’s degree by dissertation and a PhD program. The Department has a vibrant research culture and hosts a number of public lectures and research events.

- Build and maintain national and international external partnerships.
- Teaching at the undergraduate and post graduate level.
- Course coordination, curriculum development and associated administration.
- Teaching and coordination on the Clinical/Counselling Psychology professional training programme.
- Research and clinical supervision at the Master’s and Doctoral level.
- Research supervision at Honours level.
- A PhD degree in Psychology.
- Track record of accredited publications.
- Registration as a Clinical/Counselling Psychologist with the HPCSA.
- Evidence of experience of teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.
- Evidence of a successful track record of postgraduate supervision.
- Experience in clinical/therapeutic supervision (including assessments and report writing).
