PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
The Protection Services Superintendent is responsible for managing and coordinating investigative functions, while establishing an intelligence network to proactively identify and address security and crime-related issues. The role aims to deter, prevent, and investigate internal and external threats to the company.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- Relevant NQF Level 7 qualification in Security Risk Management, Police Management, or Criminology
- Firearm competency, valid driver's licence and PSIRA Grade A
- 5–7 years of SAPS experience in investigations, court procedures, specialised investigations, or security operations within the mining/refining industry
- Experience with CCTV, Systems Control Room operations, and armed escorts
- In-depth knowledge of relevant legislation, including Criminal Procedure Act, Constitution of South Africa, Labour legislation, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Minerals Act, Mines and Works Act, Explosives Act, Precious Metals Act and Firearm Control Act
- Proficiency in investigation techniques, fingerprint analysis, and security systems
- Ability to present evidence in court, with strong problem-solving, decision-making, and conflict resolution skills
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and report writing skills
- Participative leadership style with the ability to build trust, foster relationships, and embrace diversity
- Medically fit for BMR and PMR
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Promote security awareness among employees, contractors, and visitors regarding threats, crime trends, and company policies
- Advise management on security threats and recommend countermeasures
- Conduct security audits and implement corrective actions
- Investigate crime, related incidents and security breaches to ensure a safe working environment
- Safeguard company assets through effective security measures
- Build and maintain relationships with SAPS, emergency services, and other security stakeholders
- Compile thorough investigation reports with actionable recommendations for senior management
- Monitor investigator performance and case docket quality
- Support post-investigation processes, including preparation for disciplinary hearings and court proceedings
- Perform administrative duties and participate in forums to benchmark security practices

- Administrative duties with regards to criminal screening for the Operations (Bookings, screening, submissions and feedback)
- Maintenance and the generation of administrative and statistical reports
- The control and management of the Office Administration and Filing system and all administration relating to data systems will also be the responsibility of this role
- Effective communication with relevant stakeholders at Operations

Job Responsibilities
- Build and lead a high-performance security team, driving professionalism, accountability, and transformation.
- Conduct risk assessments and implement mitigation strategies to secure all facilities and operations.
- Coordinate with law enforcement, industry bodies, and private sector stakeholders for risk management and incident resolution.
- Develop a strategic roadmap for adopting emerging security technologies like AI-driven threat detection, blockchain, and IoT security.
- Develop and implement the bank's corporate security vision, mission, strategy, and risk management programs.
- Develop and maintain a Group Physical Security strategy, policies, standards and procedures aligned with the bank's risk appetite, regulatory requirements and business strategy.
- Ensure alignment of Group Security Services with broader Nedbank strategies and objectives.
- Ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations and maintain transparent reporting mechanisms for security activities.
- Foster a culture of security awareness and continuous improvement throughout the organisation.
- Lead group-level incident command management and incident response planning, ensuring rapid and effective action during emergencies.
- Lead strategic and tactical security initiatives to safeguard people, assets, and operations, and combat violent crime.
- Maintain threat intelligence capability: monitoring political, social and crime trends affecting operations and advising mitigations.
- Manage relationships with external security vendors and ensure compliance with service level agreements and regulatory requirements.
- Manage the security budget and ensure optimal resource allocation.
- Monitor and report on security risks, developments, and performance to executive leadership.
- Oversee procurement, deployment and lifecycle management of security technology, ensuring interoperability, resilience and data privacy.
- Oversee security operations including personnel management, training, and technology deployment.
- Oversee the delivery of physical, protective, personnel, and travel security services across the Group.
- Own specification, procurement, deployment and lifecycle management of physical security systems: CCTV, access control, perimeter systems, intrusion detection, intercoms, security analytics.
- Protect key people via executive protection programs as appropriate.
- Provide expert advice and assurance on physical and protective security to Business, Executive Management and the Board.
- Regularly review and update systems and processes to address evolving threats and improve security measures.
- Stay informed about technological innovations and assess their potential impact on the bank's security posture.
- Support corporate citizenship and transformation initiatives through effective leadership and stakeholder engagement.
Essential Qualification
- Bachelor's degree in security management, Criminal Justice, Business Administration, or a related field.
Preferred Certifications
- Private Security Industry Regulation Act (PSIRA)
- Certified Protection Professional (CPP) or Physical Security Professional (PSP) are preferred
Minimum Experience Level
- Extensive experience (minimum 10 years) in security management, preferably within the banking industry.

Duties and responsibilities:
- Develop and ensure implementation of service standards for technical security services.
- Monitor and evaluate multiple contractors' performance, enforce service levels, and address non-compliance.
- Oversee contract renewals and cost-benefit analysis to ensure the sustainability of technical security infrastructure for all long-term contracts.
- Align contract planning with institutional annual funding and strategic priorities.
- Develop project briefs and technical scopes, including the approval of project planning before execution.
- Lead and coordinate the development of business cases relating to technical security services.
- Manage Technical Security projects through the full lifecycle: initiation, planning, execution, monitoring & control, and closure.
- Develop and manage security system design and installation projects from concept to commissioning.
- Develop and draft technical specifications, drawings, and enforce technical specifications and compliance checklists for all security systems.
- Establish requirements for security systems, viz, video surveillance, motion detection, facial recognition, CCTV cameras, etc., to ensure installation and operation.
- Ensure the integration of security systems, technologies and the activation of Artificial Intelligence capability across the institution's security infrastructure.
- Manage server infrastructure, network, data archiving and monitor infrastructure systems health.
- Develop and enforce access control policies aligned with university risk profiles and operational needs.
- Conduct routine audits and maintain servers and workstations, ensuring uptime and data integrity and provide engineering solutions.
- Approve card applications and manage access profile requests in accordance with departmental requirements and authorisation levels.
- Provides inputs towards the budgeting process, assumptions and forecasts aligned with operational needs.
- Manage staff in accordance with the UFS HR policies.
- Manage procurement processes for the Technical Security Services section.
Inherent requirements:
- Bachelor's degree or an advanced diploma/BTech degree/postgraduate certificate on NQF Level 7 or a three (3) year National Diploma on NQF Level 6 in Electrical or Electronics Engineering.
- Valid PSIRA Grade B registration (attach a copy) or undertaking to obtain the registration within six (6) months after appointment.
- A valid code 8 driver's licence (attach a copy).
- Minimum of four (4) years' relevant working experience relating to the duties and responsibilities.
Recommendations:
- Higher education sector experience.
- Avigilon and any other recognised CCTV cameras certification (attach proof).
- Project Management certificate (attach proof).
- Registration with a professional body such as Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA)(attach proof).
- Impro certification (IXP400 & Impro Portal)(attach proof).
- Knowledge in conducting physical security assessments.
- Knowledge of intruder and fire alarm systems.
