Job Description
Process Design Graduates will be exposed and developed to:

  • Create high quality process designs within the project(s) to improve customer experience, process efficiency and process excellence in order to deliver against defined business objectives
  • Execute against the customer experience strategy within the context of a specific process, providing high quality process design solutions to business or customer problems; follow good process engineering practices within the project to enable consistent process design quality.
  • Deliver continuous incremental improvements in process efficiencies and process rigour, that both improve the quality of delivery and reduce cost
  • Support the translation of process improvements into technical, business and architecture requirements that account for risk and compliance requirements and technical limitations.
  • Drive the use of Absa's Process Design knowledge base and promote lean, efficient process thinking within the project
  • Execute high quality process design work within a project, solving process inefficiencies and pain points; and delivering on agreed outputs in a timely manner.
  • Systematically pursue development of own specialist knowledge and actively seek mentorship.
  • Share specialist knowledge with peers and fellow graduates.

Field of study

  • A BSC, BEng or BEng Tech in Industrial Engineering or Chemical Engineering or Tech Operations Management , or is busy studying and plans to obtain this by end of 2025

SUMMARY:

POSITION INFO:

The Process Safety Design Engineer is responsible for developing and integrating process safety strategies and engineering solutions into facility designs, ensuring compliance with international safety standards and reducing operational risk across oil & gas facilities. This role involves working across multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, compliant, and cost-effective engineering solutions in both greenfield and brownfield projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and support process safety design activities across project lifecycle stages (conceptual, FEED, detailed design).
  • Conduct Process Hazard Analyses (PHA), including HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, SIL studies.
  • Develop and maintain safety documentation including Bow-Tie diagrams, safety philosophies, Cause & Effect charts, and fire & explosion risk assessments (FERA).
  • Design and specify safety systems such as ESD, fire and gas detection, relief systems, and pressure protection devices.
  • Perform quantitative risk assessments (QRA), dispersion modeling, and consequence analysis.
  • Ensure designs meet local and international codes and standards (API, IEC, NFPA, ISO, OSHA, etc.).
  • Support development and review of Safety Cases, SIMOPS plans, and emergency response plans.
  • Interface with process, piping, instrumentation, mechanical and civil engineers for integrated safety solutions.
  • Participate in design reviews (3D model reviews, P&ID reviews, constructability and operability reviews).
  • Provide technical input to procurement, construction, commissioning, and operational teams.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or related field.
  • Postgraduate training in Process Safety Engineering (preferred).
  • Professional Engineering Registration (e.g., PrEng, CEng, PE) is advantageous.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of process safety design principles and risk assessment techniques.
  • Proficiency in process simulation tools and safety analysis software (e.g., PHAST, PIPENET, DNV GL, PHA-Pro).
  • Familiarity with international oil & gas safety regulations and standards.
  • Ability to interpret and develop PFDs, P&IDs, and engineering drawings.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder engagement, and report writing skills.
  • Highly analytical with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Attention to detail with a commitment to operational integrity and safety.

Experience:

  • 5–10 years of experience in process safety and risk management within the oil & gas, petrochemical, or energy sector.
  • Demonstrated experience in design and review of safety systems for upstream, midstream, or downstream facilities.

Summary

Junior Design / Process Engineer – Pietermaritzburg

Position Description

Our client is a manufacturer of aluminium, brass, and zinc castings. The role involves designing process flows for new and existing product lines, including creating process flow charts, SOPs, work instructions, tool/data sheets, and bills of materials. You will also design tools, jigs, and fixtures using 2D & 3D CAD and generate CNC programs as required.

Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in materials, manufacturing methods, material yield, lean processes, and re-engineering. Oversee tooling manufacture and optimize tooling and processes during first-off and production runs.

Qualifications
  • Grade 12 or Technical N3
  • NTS 2 to NTS 6 or equivalent
  • Tool and Die Maker or similar technical trade
Skills
  • Knowledge of extrusion process equipment and die design
  • Understanding of the PDC product range (advantageous)
  • Manufacturing experience
  • Proficiency in VISI 3D CAD software
  • Working knowledge of 2D drafting software such as AutoCAD or NanoCAD

  • Preliminary cost estimates for potential projects and budget proposals.
  • Planning, design, specification, procurement, reporting, construction, commissioning and handover of project packages.
  • Ensure scopes of works for various projects are correctly specified and matches budget.
  • Manage all the resources in the best interest of the company
  • Provide technical leadership and maintaining technical quality norms and standards, ensuring that appropriate technologies are incorporated into the designs, and they comply with the relevant engineering standards.
  • Co-ordinating designs and drawing with all relevant engineering disciplines.
  • Contribute to the development and or refining of all ISO aligned, process systems and procedures.
  • Maintain professional registration(s) and keep up to date new technologies as well as changes in the application of current process technologies in the fields operate in.
  • Knowledge sharing and transfer on all applicable processes and technologies including the primary and secondary beneficiation of all applicable ores into the products as required by the group clients.
