PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
To lead the domain in ensuring the safe, efficient and cost-effective maintenance of the plant with the minimum interruption to production / operations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- NQF level 7 qualification (BSc/Beng etc.) in Mechanical Engineering is essential.
- Government Certificate of Competency (GCC) is essential.
- Registered Professional Engineer with Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) is an added advantage.
- More than 3 years' relevant experience in a heavy engineering / process environment e.g. Ferrochrome, Petro-Chemical & Refining.
- Knowledge of an enterprise resource planning system essential, e.g. SAP.
- Excellent knowledge of relevant legislation (i.e., OSH Act, LRA), project management principles/requirements, planned maintenance system and risk management principles.
- Effective leadership, problem solving, time management, and conflict handling skills.
- Strong communication, report writing and communication skills.
- Must be medically fit for the Base Metal Refinery (BMR).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage the SAP planned maintenance system to ensure plant maintenance is conducted in an optimal manner.
- Ensure all statutory inspections are undertaken within the prescribed manner and time in accordance with the OHS Act and regulations.
- Identify and establish a solid renewals and capital plan while managing these projects to finalization within set time and budgetary constraints while achieving the requisite quality requirements.
- Plan, motivate and manage annual plant engineering maintenance budgets and control working costs within these budgets.
- Ensure adherence to best procurement practices in line with corporate governance systems and standards.
- Manage and drive the domain's health and safety program in conjunction with the domain managers.
- Develop, motivate and discipline personnel to ensure sound employee performance and relations in the section.
- Develop and review meaningful work procedures and ensure that planned job observations are conducted on employees and procedures.
- Establish and review operational, safety and issue-based risks.
- Identify and analyse problems in the domain and provide workable solutions.

Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Extraction Manager to join our team and lead the operations and maintenance of our extraction department. The successful candidate will have strong technical competency, leadership skills, and a background in heavy industry engineering. They must be self-motivated, a team player, and passionate about continuous improvement, quality workmanship, and safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the extraction operations and maintenance teams.
- Oversee the operation and maintenance of cane preparation, juice extraction, and de-watering Mill plants.
- Implement planned and routine maintenance strategies to improve plant availability.
- Control the maintenance and operating budgets for both the season and off-crop periods.
- Maintain a safe working environment and implement effective safety procedures for the extraction operations and maintenance teams.
- Investigate problems and propose competent technical solutions.
Requirements
- B Tech / BEng/ BSc degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
- Government Certificate of Competence (GCC Factories) will be an added advantage.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a heavy engineering environment, preferably in the sugar industry.
- Proven ability to effectively manage capital projects and plant modifications.
- Good understanding of milling and diffuser operations and maintenance.
- Asset management and condition-based monitoring experience.
- Ability to lead and motivate the Maintenance and Operations teams.
- Knowledge and experience of planned maintenance systems.
- Sugar industry experience will be an added advantage.
- Good technical fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent leadership and communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft packages.

Minimum Requirements

Duties & Responsibilities:
- Constantly looking and finding ways to improve plant efficiency and effectiveness.
- Regularly reviews and monitor progress, taking action to reschedule and re-prioritize (must be able to "think on his/her feet").
- Ability to handle problems encountered with machinery and find a solution with immediacy.
- Identifies training needs and recommends training of employees to the departmental trainer.
- Implements Company's disciplinary procedure, which includes written warnings and initiation of disciplinary enquiry's where necessary.
Project planning
- Strategize capex focus to reduce plant down time and improve efficiencies of machines and Production lines.
- Ensure that health and safety requirements as per the Rainbow standard are adhere to with regards to specifying new equipment.
- Process change control documentation with regards to all equipment and plant changes with proven records for audit purposes.
- Manage and control the fixed asset register and ensure that it is updated as per policy and depreciation is in line with group standards.
- Ensure that all project work in plant is carried out and completed to the highest level of trade-man ship quality and to safe food requirements.
Maintenance
- Develop and implement an effective planned preventative maintenance system for the facility as well as oversee major repairs of breakdowns thus minimizing R&M costs in the region.
- Ensure all buildings and accessories are utilized into risk, security, safety, health, HACCP AND ISO22000, 14000, 18000.
Risk Management:
- In terms of design, use and maintenance, ensure all facilities comply with health, safety, security and other legal requirements.
Operational Engineering Management:
- Drive the daily / weekly maintenance planning process for the plant – prioritizing, scheduling, and allocation of tasks to different disciplines of the engineering department, with the assistance of the planner.
- Drive and deliver the agreed strategy to reduce plant down time and improve efficiencies of machines and lines.
- Responsible for health and safety with regards to all equipment and plant to ensure a safe environment to operate and work on for all staff.

Repairs and Renovations:
- Coordinates renovations of existing facilities and the construction of new facilities.

- Follow up on requirements for compliance ensuring that it is continuously maintained &adhered to.
Safety and Security
- Ensures engineering staff follow safety rules and regulations as per the organization's safety plan.
- Ensure that security access points to the premises and BMS system are in good working condition.
Financial Management
• Manage costs to ensure lowest cost production and the optimal utilization of assets.
