Project Engineer - Mechanical Piping ( EPC) Location: Sandton
Type: 1-Year Contract
An established engineering and construction firm is seeking a Mechanical & Piping Project Engineer to lead and support the design, procurement, construction, and commissioning of mechanical and piping systems for complex process plant projects—locally and abroad.
Minimum Requirements:
Qualifications:
- National Diploma or Degree in Mechanical or Process Engineering.
- Pr. Eng / Pr. Tech registration .
- Postgrad in engineering/project management (beneficial).
Experience:
- 5+ years in mechanical & piping engineering in industrial/construction environments.
- Exposure to process plant design, multidisciplinary projects, and SHERQC.
- Experience in HAZOP, cost control, and contract management.
- EPCM Experience in the Burner & furnace Industry
- Experience with Autodesk Inventor, Navis or Aveva software
Technical Skills:
- Strong understanding of fluid dynamics and mechanical design standards.
- Proficient in 2D/3D drawing review and BIM awareness.
- Skilled in Microsoft Office, Teams/Zoom, and design collaboration tools.
- Analytical, detail-focused, and effective under pressure.
- Willing to travel locally and internationally.
Key Technical Responsibilities
- Execute mechanical & piping design from concept to commissioning.
- Develop and review specifications, datasheets, P&IDs, and PFDs.
- Oversee mechanical systems: pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, vessels, fans, conveyors, gas cleaning units, etc.
- Review and coordinate 2D/3D drawings and ensure BIM alignment.
- Ensure compliance with piping and mechanical codes and safety regulations (OHS Act, MHSA).
- Support FATs, inspections, and QA/QC processes.
- Manage budgets, subcontractors, and project documentation.
- Collaborate across disciplines to meet schedule and design goals.

Job Description
- Bachelors Degree / Diploma in mechanical or process engineering.
- Pr. Eng. / Pr. Tech would be advantageous.
- Relevant post graduate qualifications albeit technical, management or business related would be advantageous.

A. Projects
- Performs and manages mechanical & piping engineering projects, which include but are not limited to, engineering calculations, design and analysis, drawing review and strong technical presence during the fabrication and construction phase of a project.
- Contributes in the project planning and set up to ensure project execution is inclusive of the complete discipline scope of work.
- Advises on cost estimates for proposals and contracts in conjunction with the Project Director or Project Managers.
- Prepares and is responsible for the necessary mechanical & piping engineering design and specification and ensures the design is communicated accurately for estimating and project execution.
- Management and distribution of equipment drawings for the project and site activities as required.
- Provides project teams with the relevant engineering input when required, including assistance with the interpretation of the design drawings and installation of the required equipment.
- Performs the relevant inspections and witness testing when required on components as required by the Quality Control Plan.
- Performs field supervision of the relevant construction and commissioning when required.
- Reports on progress in conjunction with the project team, and takes the necessary remedial action where necessary.
- Ensures project contracts, specifications, standards, lists and bills of quantity meet the project requirements and constantly keeps such documents updated throughout the project.
- Travels to construction sites to perform inspections to confirm the design is adhered to.
- Ensure cost control with respect to mechanical & piping design and subcontractor management.
- Actively investigate cost saving opportunities for Company.
C. Planning and programming of the project:
- Liaise with the project planner to continuously monitor project schedules as well as re-planning to achieve new targets.
- Ensure sub-contractors and fabricators manage and maintain contractual timelines to minimise project delays and ensure successful projects.
- Ensure designs comply with the relevant legislations and legal requirements.
- Ensure formal record keeping and implementation of project decision lists.

Project Life Cycle

- Design Codes - Knowledge of local piping design codes and standards
