Job Description

Key Responsibilities

Develop and maintain robust firmware for embedded systems using C/C++.
Design and implement drivers for a wide range of peripherals and optical components (SPI, I2C, UART, USB, GPIO).
Collaborate closely with hardware teams during schematic reviews, PCB bring-up, and hardware testing phases.
Integrate and control optical subsystems such as lasers, photodiodes, modulators, and high-speed ADCs.
Work within embedded Linux or RTOS environments to develop real-time, high-reliability applications.
Apply signal processing and digital filtering techniques for interpreting sensor and optical data.
Create automation and testing tools using scripting languages such as Python or Bash.
Conduct system-level testing, debugging, and optimisation to improve performance and stability.
Document firmware architecture, module interfaces, and standard operating/test procedures.
Support regulatory and compliance efforts, including EMC, CE, and general safety standards.

Experience

Experience Summary
7+ years in embedded C/C++ firmware development for microcontrollers (STM32, NXP, TI). Skilled in embedded Linux/RTOS (FreeRTOS, Zephyr). Experience collaborating with hardware teams on custom board firmware. Strong debugging skills (oscilloscope, logic analyzer, JTAG). Proficient in Python/Bash scripting for automation. Worked on optical subsystems (lasers, photodiodes, ADCs) with focus on real-time, reliable embedded solutions. Familiar with EMC/CE standards.

Professional Experience
7+ years experience developing embedded applications in C and C++, focusing on real-time performance and reliability.
4+ years hands-on firmware development for microcontroller platforms such as STM32, NXP, and TIcovering driver development, peripheral integration, and low-level hardware interfacing.
3+ years collaborating with hardware teams to adapt and optimise firmware based on custom board layouts and hardware requirements.
Strong experience in embedded Linux and RTOS environments (e.g., FreeRTOS, Zephyr), including bootloader development and multitasking systems.

Duties & Responsibilities The responsibilities of the Electronics Engineer will include: Concept electronic designs to meet the system requirements provided by the Systems Engineer Detailed electronic hardware designs based on the chosen concept design Oversee and review PCB designs Internal and external interface designs Design for Electro-magnetic compatibility Simulation and analysis in support of the design process Ability to develop and/or understand firmware and software for optical systems is an advantage Creation of documentation (e.g. requirement specifications, design description and verification documents, version descriptions) as outputs of the various stages of the hardware design, development, and review process Perform FAIT (Fabrication, Assembly, Integration and Testing) for electronic components/sub-systems Perform verification, validation and qualification testing of the electronic components/subsystems Suitable Character The following traits are desired for this role: The ability to apply a deep technical knowledge through independent judgement and decision making Self-motivated and proactive, with the drive necessary to bring product development projects to a successful conclusion An innovative thinker and pragmatic problem solver, who can identify a variety of technical options, evaluate their suitability, and select the optimum solution Willing to consult the opinion of others and negotiate consensus where necessary Exhibits an enthusiastic, confident and positive attitude to their work Maintains a polite, respectful and professional demeanour at all times Is prepared to ensure project success in any reasonable way Desired Experience & Qualification Bachelor's or higher Electronic Engineering Degree is essential. Required Experience 5-10 years of Electronic Engineering experience in a military product development environment is essential 3-5 years’ experience in Electronic Hardware Design in an Opto-Electronic development environment (e.g. DTV cameras or Infrared cameras) is essential Working knowledge of current printed circuit board and component technologies, as well as related CAD tools (e.g. Altium Designer, Cadence) is desired including FPGA and ASIC devices, fiber optics cables, wiring types, electrical connectors is essential Working knowledge of computing system design (FPGA, memory and supporting circuitry) is essential Familiarity with the typical electronic hardware development process and documentation artifacts is essential Familiarity with military and/or industry hardware specifications Experience working with embedded software and firmware Working knowledge of typical electronic system ancillary components such as cables and connectors and heat sinks is essential Working knowledge of electronic engineering test equipment and measurement techniques is essential Familiarity with environmental and EMI testing and qualification Package & Remuneration Highly negotiable from 5 years - 15+ years experience: R60,000.00 - R1,200,000.00 per month. #J-18808-Ljbffr
