Contours Landscapes (PTY) Ltd is seeking a suitably qualified and experienced Assistant Nursery Manager who will be responsible for the daily operations involved with running a greenhouse or nursery alongside the Maintenance Manager. The role includes the implementation of best management practices that ensure high levels of plant quality and that health and safety obligations are met, as well as overseeing nursery maintenance.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS
Production of Quality Planting Material:
- Develop detailed annual plans for the seasonal rotation of plants, flowers, etc, in the facility's various landscaped areas and flowerbeds.
- Direct and assist the staff on the planting of new vegetation, the replacement and spraying of trees and shrubs and tending to high-stress areas, especially during the summer months.
- Manage crop scheduling for timing of appropriate planting and harvesting.
- Oversee the care and maintenance of nursery stock, plants, shrubs and trees on the facility grounds including pruning, trimming and grounds maintenance.
- This includes chemical application and schedules, irrigation, fertilization, monitoring and regulating greenhouse/nursery conditions to ensure optimum growth and health of plants.
Safety Management:
- Oversee pest and disease monitoring, stay up to date with weekly husbandry tasks and timeous rejuvenation of mother stock material when needed.

- Ensuring all staff, customers and visitors comply with safety standards.
- Management of audits and all Health and Safety and risk assessments.
Customer Service Delivery:
- Work collaboratively with business partners to ensure best plant health and clean stock practices.
Administration:
- Control costs and assist in annual budget planning.
- Assist in monitoring business volume forecast and plans accordingly in areas of manpower, productivity, costs and other expenses.
- Recording and Maintaining accurate crop records and inventory control, including accurate receiving, daily/weekly inventory counts and minimize shrinkage through proper utilization of current inventory programs and horticultural practices.
People Management:
- Overseeing and monitoring staff.
- Motivate, develop and direct people as they work, identifying the best people for the job and assuring adherence to established procedures.
- Assure that effective orientation and training are given.
- Incorporate safe work practices in job performance.
- General Human Relations (HR) related administrative tasks up to disciplinary level.
- Monitoring & ensuring that disciplinary measures are exacted & rolled out as per company mandate and legislation.
MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

About the Role
We're a Benoni-based horticulture company looking for a highly organised Admin Assistant to support our operations and growing nursery. You'll blend office admin and light operations, i.e. invoicing, email/customer support, label printing, packing small orders/samples, and keep the office and nursery running smoothly.
What you'll do
- Accounts/Admin: Capture and process invoices accurately, issue customer invoices, maintain records, and respond to email enquiries.
- Customer/Front Office: Welcome visitors, answer calls/emails professionally (English & Afrikaans).
- Operations support: Print product/packaging labels, pick/pack small orders or samples, prepare waybills, and keep supplies stocked.
- IT-savvy tasks: Troubleshoot basic printer/label printer issues and keep templates organised.
What you'll need
- Diploma/degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field, 2+ years admin/accounts experience.
- Fluent in English and Afrikaans (spoken & written).
- Strong Excel skills, experience with Sage/Pastel or Xero an advantage.
- Detail-driven, organised, and calm under time pressure.
- Own reliable transport (limited public transport nearby).
- Comfortable working in a nursery/warehouse environment and able to lift up to 15 kg occasionally.
Nice to have
