Overview

A vacancy exists for a Nurse Manager based at Life Kingsbury Hospital , Cape Town , reporting to the Hospital Manager . The successful candidate will be responsible for managing, leading and coordinating the nursing function at Life Kingsbury, Life Sports Science and Life Peninsula Eye hospitals in line with hospital and company strategic objectives of growth, quality and people.

Responsibilities
  • Effective operational management of clinical outcomes by establishing clinical care risks with Unit Managers, developing and implementing nursing care strategy, and conducting regular progress reviews with a multi-disciplinary team, including driving compliance to LHC clinical standards.
  • Drive compliance and improvement of LHC nursing quality metrics and quality accreditation systems to ensure a safe patient environment and reduction of risks.
  • Lead and participate in LHC & Nursing quality initiatives and BOPs (Business Operating Policies).
  • Plan, prepare and monitor the budget monthly; manage labour spend in line with budget, patient requirements and activities; maintain focus on internal DSO.
  • Recruit, retain, motivate and develop staff according to LHC people policies and practices; participate actively in Hospital management committee meetings.
  • Build productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders by participating in forums, cross-functional activities and networking opportunities.
  • Market the professional image of Nursing and the Hospital within the community; participate in marketing initiatives and promote nursing as a career; drive formal nurse training and CPD to address shortages and competence.
  • Ensure optimal departmental governance to achieve sound business ethics, risk management and control with appropriate transparencies and controls.
Requirements
  • Degree / Diploma in Nursing
  • Post-graduate Clinical, Education and/or Management qualification is advantageous.
  • Current registration with South African Nursing Council
  • Minimum of 5 years proven leadership and management experience in healthcare (ideally private)
  • Demonstrated ability in the facilitation of change management
  • Basic understanding of labour legislation
  • Understanding of business principles and a commercial orientation
  • Computer proficiency (MS Office)
  • Driver’s license and ability to travel

Job Description

An opportunity exists for an Unit Manager Surgical Ward, reporting to the Nursing Services Manager. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring and monitoring the quality nursing care coordinating the multidisciplinary team in the unit.

Critical Outputs

  • Evaluate and monitor nursing quality indicators and clinical outcomes.
  • Provide cost effective quality patient care in line with clinical governance.
  • Ensure the principles of infection prevention and all international standards precautions are adhered to.
  • Implement quality initiatives.
  • Communicate effectively with patients regarding their care.
  • Function as clinical expert in achieving patient outcomes.
  • Ensure competence of staff and students, determine and drive criteria for effective professional socialization, create an environment conducive to learning and provide feedback to relevant stakeholders.
  • Promote customer satisfaction within unit, address customer complaints, conduct quality care rounds and clinical practice audits to monitor care levels and report accordingly.
  • Identify clinical and safety risks and trends in all of the above, implement corrective action where necessary and monitor on an ongoing basis.
  • Initiate and drive unit specific best operating practice, communicate these for wider implementation and participate in hospital specific marketing initiatives.
  • Ensure staff are trained on the operation of equipment within unit and together with relevant stakeholders ensure equipment is in working order to provide a safe patient environment.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with doctors by agreeing on a professional code of conduct, driving and monitoring effective communication regarding positive patient outcomes.

Requirements

  • Degree or Diploma in Nursing with at least 5 years' experience in Surgical ward
  • Qualification in Nursing Administration
  • Current registration with SANC.
  • Previous Unit Management experience.
  • Proven leadership and people management skills would be an advantage.
  • Basic understanding of labour legislation, financial and supply chain management principles.
  • Computer proficiency.

Role Purpose

To assist in the enhancement and management of cost-effective managed health care with the objective of promoting rational utilisation of health care facilities and containing associated costs generated by these services.

Requirements

  • A National Senior Certificate is essential
  • It is essential to have a Nursing Diploma or Degree
  • Minimum of 1 year's clinical experience within a private hospital
  • The incumbent must be registered with SANC (South African Nursing Council) as a Registered / Professional Nurse
  • Experience in a managed care / case management environment would be an advantage
  • MS 365 proficiency

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review of in-hospital patients for appropriateness of care, length of stay and level of care.
  • Liaise with the service provider on clinical updates, as well as outstanding information.
  • Engage with the treating doctor(s) to ensure appropriate treatment, length of stay and level of care is rendered.
  • Discharge planning for in-hospital patients to ensure ongoing support and care post discharge.
  • Develop, implement and communicate the practice and/or clinical guidelines for cost effective care.
  • Authorise appropriate and cost-effective surgical care and treatment.
  • Ensure the consistent and correct application of exclusions.
  • Adhere to policies and procedures and take corrective action where necessary.
  • Adhere to organisational best practice and legislative requirements.
  • Take ownership of escalated and unresolved queries and ensure they are resolved timeously.
  • Manage queries until resolution and update the incident details.
  • Identify financial and business risks to the company and escalate accordingly.
  • Provide clinical support to non-clinical team's if/when required.
  • Drive and support effective teamwork within the department.
  • Strive to demonstrate the company's values daily.
  • Engage in hospital visits where needed to build stakeholder relationships, proactively resolve queries and increase visibility to members.
  • Ensure the effective, accurate and timeous completion of relevant documentation and recording of interventions.
  • Communicate with providers to improve the cost efficiencies of health care delivery.
  • Ensure Service Level Agreements are met and exceeded.
  • Continuously develop own expertise in terms of industry and subject matter development and application thereof in an area of specialisation.
