PREPARATORY SCHOOL HEAD OF DEPARTMENT: MUSICThe successful candidate will:
- Teach classroom music to Grades 4 to 7 classes
- Conduct the Preparatory School choir
- Have a passion for the inclusion and promotion of African and South African music
- Grow and develop music in all areas in the Preparatory with special reference to the bands, brass and woodwind ensembles, string ensembles, the a Capella ensemble, and the development of a choir
- Manage outside music providers in terms of timetables and performances
- Provide musical accompaniment during assemblies and other formal school functions such as Prize Giving
- Ensure a student musical item is prepared for every assembly, celebration and event e.g. Founders’ Day, Valediction, Prize Giving etc.
- Work in the creative arts team on Preparatory performances and productions with special attention paid to music evenings/showcases.

Responsibilities
- Lead and direct the band during live performances in the Music Hall, ensuring high-quality and engaging performances
- Collaborate with other entertainment staff to create a diverse and entertaining lineup of performances
- Recruit, train, and manage a team of musicians to ensure a high level of talent and professionalism
- Create and maintain set lists and ensure the band is well-rehearsed and prepared for each performance
- Work with the ship's sound and lighting technicians to ensure a smooth and seamless production
- Maintain a positive and professional relationship with guests and address any concerns or issues that may arise during performances
- Ensure all equipment and instruments are properly maintained and in good working condition
- Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures while onboard the cruise ship
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as a band leader or musical director

Duties & ResponsibilitiesKey Responsibilities:
- Teach practical contemporary commercial music (CCM) singing modules that primarily include the genres of musical theatre, pop, and jazz.
- Musically direct the CCM vocal ensemble.
- Teach CCM voice pedagogy and other areas of interest.
- Collaborate and build effective relationships for successful model delivery.
Research Supervision:
- Provide supervision at the undergraduate, honours and masters level.
Research Entity:
- Research in any area of the discipline.
- Contribute to the vision and mission of the MASARA research entity.
Administrative Duties:
- Perform administrative tasks, including serving on committees.
Minimum Requirements:
- A Masters (NQF Level 9) in Contemporary Commercial Music/Jazz/Musical Theatre.
- A minimum of 1 year experience in lecturing and research in Contemporary Commercial Music (singing) including either pop, jazz, or musical theatre on a higher education level.
- Research (including creative outputs) experience on a higher education level.
- Evidence of significant professional performing experience in CCM singing including either pop, jazz, or musical theatre.
Added Advantages:
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in lecturing and research in Contemporary Commercial Music (singing) including either pop, jazz, or musical theatre on a higher education level.
Key Functional/Technical Competencies:
- Professional knowledge of contemporary commercial music singing techniques, theories, teaching strategies, and research methodologies.
- A knowledge of the repertoire, style and performance practice of CCM including pop, jazz, and musical theatre.
- The ability to diagnose and remedy vocal faults among CCM singers.
- The ability to recruit and retain excellent students.
- Demonstrate basic skills in some of the following practical areas: piano accompaniment, movement, choreography.
- Competencies in musical stage production.
- Additional duties may be assigned commensurate with the candidate’s expertise.
- The ability to teach stagecraft to CCM singers (recommendation).
- The ability to musically/dramatically direct and stage a musical (recommendation).
Key Behavioural Competencies:
- Excellent interpersonal skills.

- The ability to present own accurate and assertive research on a variety of public platforms (conferences and publications).

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS- To deliver high quality undergraduate and potential post graduate teaching in music theory and music history as well as associated musicology courses.
- To supervise student research projects at undergraduate and potentially post graduate levels.
- To contribute to curriculum development and pedagogical innovation.
- To maintain an active research profile leading to high-quality publications and potential for eternal funding
- To participate in academic administration, assessment, and student support
- To engage with external communities and contribute to public scholarship in music.
- Expertise in music theory and music history, with the ability to teach across a broad historical and stylistic range.
- A strong research agenda (or clear potential) of publications in reputable peer-reviewed platforms.
- Experience in (or strong potential for) teaching at tertiary level, with a commitment to inclusive and effective pedagogical practices.
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across music disciplines, including performance, composition and ethnomusicology.
In order to be considered for appointment to this post at Lecturer level, candidates should have a relevant Master’s degree and 2 years relevant and/or related work experience. For Associate lecturer, a BMus (Honours equivalent) degree and 1 year of relevant and/or related work experience is required.
