The Responsibilities
- Oversee, manage, and provide guidance to the operational and technical services team to ensure efficient mining operations.
- Collaborate with the Mineral Resources department, planning, and production engineering teams to develop forecasts and mining strategies that optimize costs, mine development, ore production, and key infrastructure upgrades, maximizing the mine's overall contribution to operations.
- Lead the underground technical team in producing plans and designs aligned with the mining schedule to achieve monthly production targets, meeting budgeted tonnage and ounces.
- Maintain regular communication with mine personnel, keeping them updated on operational status, objectives, and targets.
- Support the development of direct reports through coaching, training, and regular performance appraisals.
- Exhibit strong leadership through effective communication, performance management, and the ability to convey operational information to both management and site visitors.
- Analyze and report on operational performance to identify issues early and implement interventions to maintain or improve results.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to challenge current processes and implement enhancements that support the mine's planned growth.
- Ensure the implementation of short-, medium-, and long-term mine plans to optimize the mine's lifespan and help the business meet production and cost objectives within the Underground Mining Department.
Requirements
- Degree in Mining Engineering or related field.
- Minimum of 10 years' experience in underground mining operations, including leadership roles.
- Strong knowledge of mine planning, production scheduling, and cost management.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and develop teams.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Strong leadership and team management abilities, with experience in coaching and mentoring staff.

Position Overview
The Mining Manager will assume legal responsibility in terms of Section 3.1(a) of the MHSA for the overall management, safety, and production of the Chrome mining operation. Technical expertise in hard rock mining (preferably bord and pillar trackless mechanised mining will be an advantage), proven operational management experience, and the ability to ensure full compliance with statutory regulatory requirements is a given.
Key Responsibilities
- Fulfil the duties and obligations of a 3.1(a) appointee as defined in the MHSA.
- Lead and manage mining operations to ensure safety, production, and profitability targets are achieved.
- Ensure legal compliance with all mining, safety, environmental, and health legislation.
- Implement and maintain effective risk management and control systems.
- Direct, train, manage and mentor all Heads of Department reporting into the 3.1(a) function.
- Oversee the design, planning, and execution of mining activities, including drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, conveying and all technical service associated activities.
- Manage production performance against budget and operational KPIs.
- Develop and enforce codes of practice, standard operating procedures and safe work practices.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives in cost control, production efficiency and productivity and safety.

Qualifications & Requirements
- BSc Mining Eng or equivalent degree or National Higher Diploma
- Blasting Certificate for Scheduled Mines (essential).
- Mine Manager's Certificate of Competency (Metalliferous Mines) (essential for 3.1a).
- At least 10-15 years' mining experience, with a minimum of 10 years in a supervisory or management role.
- Sound knowledge of MHSA, Mine Environmental Management, and related legislation.
- Strong leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Proven ability to manage teams and production in a unionised environment.
- Valid driver's license and medical fitness to work on a mine.

- Coordinate field campaigns to collect data relating to the hydrocensus data, hydrogeological setting, aquifer hydraulic properties, groundwater levels/quality data and/or mine dewatering requirements.
- Interpreting technical data and information from fieldwork and other relevant sources such as historical documents and maps to build conceptual models for groundwater flow and quality.
- Designing and completing investigations (which may include groundwater measurements/sampling or an ongoing monitoring regime) in order to confirm or further develop hydrogeological models.
- Using numerical and analytical modelling techniques to make predictions for future trends and impacts on groundwater flows and quality.
- Work in close collaboration with specialists from other disciplines.
- Delivering ‘best practice’ environmental standards, where needed in consultation with relevant government agencies and/or to the client’s requirements.
- Liaise with clients and authorities.
- Compile and write reports for submission to the client and necessary authorities.
- Continuously improve and develop the services offered within the department.
- Develop a business plan for the department which includes services and selling opportunities.
- Act as a key account manager where required, identifying business opportunities and ensure that a client centric approach is maintained at all times.
- Identify leads within the department and organize, plan and track proposals in response.
- Co-ordinate and submit proposals.
- Effective workload and resource management for the department.
- Manage the performance management and probation processes for the team.
- Provide mentorship to and develop of the team.
- Report on departmental performance at various levels and that the department achieves revenue targets.
- Manage the Recruitment and Selection process for the department in line with your workforce plan.
- Facilitate the appropriate onboarding process for all new employees.
- Manage financial expenditure for the department against the budget.

Qualifications
A Post Graduate degree in Hydrogeology/ Water Science/ Hydrology or similar.
Management Development Programme (MDP) or similar qualification (beneficial).
Project Management Certificate (beneficial).
Registered with a professional body such as SACNASP.
Experience
- Eight years or more in the relevant field, preferably within the consulting would be beneficial.
- At least eight years conducting specialist studies.
- At least five years exposure to the mining industry
- Five or more years management experience is desirable, as well as experience leading teams of 5+ staff.
