About the role
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Microbiologist to join our Quality Control team. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing microbiological testing and environmental monitoring to ensure compliance with cGMP standards and regulatory requirements. This role supports the production of safe, sterile, and high-quality pharmaceutical products.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct routine microbiological testing of raw materials, in-process samples, and finished products (e.g. bioburden, sterility).
- Perform environmental monitoring of cleanrooms, utilities (RO water testing compressed air), and personnel.
- Prepare and maintain microbial cultures, media, and reagents.
- Investigate and document microbiological deviations, out-of-specification (OOS) results, and contamination events.
- Support method development, validation, and transfer activities.
- Maintain accurate and compliant laboratory records in accordance with GMP and regulatory standards.
- Participate in internal and external audits, providing microbiological expertise and documentation.
- Ensure proper calibration, maintenance, and operation of laboratory equipment.
- Adhere to all safety and biosafety protocols in the laboratory.
- Train and mentor junior microbiology staff as needed.
- Continuous Improvement Projects and Simplification Projects.

Barrs Pharmaceuticals is seeking a detail-oriented QC Microbiologist to join our Quality Control Department . The ideal candidate will be responsible for microbiological analyses, including sample testing, method validation, and ensuring compliance with Good Microbiological Laboratory Practices (GMLP) in a non-sterile pharmaceutical manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct microbiological testing on raw materials, in-process samples, finished products, and stability samples.
- Perform environmental monitoring, water testing, and media preparation.
- Maintain adherence to industry regulations (SAHPRA, WHO).
- Support investigations for Out of Specification (OOS) and Out of Trend (OOT) results.
- Participate in method validation, equipment qualification, and process validation.
- Ensure compliance with safety, health, environmental, and quality (SHEQ) procedures.
Minimum Requirements & Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's Degree in Microbiology or a related field (Microbiology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences).
Experience: 2-3 years' experience in a pharmaceutical microbiology laboratory.
Technical Skills: Proficiency in microbiological testing methods, aseptic techniques, and data integrity principles.
