This role reports into the Advanced Technology Automation Department

Your role will include :

• To provide CAD expertise to the R&D function in the form of conceptual, preliminary and detailed parametric 3D model designs and associated manufacturing detail drawings in accordance with De Beers Technologies standards and procedures.
• To support the design team with the assembly of prototypes
• Deliver detailed 3D parametric models of product / machine designs and the associated manufacturing data
• Provide mechanical engineering expertise during the design process
• Provide innovative, cost-effective mechanical design solutions in response to technical challenges
• Maintain excellent world class housekeeping standards that fosters a safe working environment for all
• Strict adherence to all internal HSE policies and procedures as well as all legal regulations / requirements.
• Assembly and setup of prototypes
• Responsible for technical performance of a sub-system / product
• Executes tasks assigned by engineers and tech lead
• Solves problems from existing knowledge or by reading up and generating new knowledge

Qualifications

• Engineering Drawing Diploma or National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering

Additional requirements :

• CREO or any drawing other CAD software detailing experience
• Computer Literacy
• Effective communication skills in English (written and verbal)
• Hands-on practical experience would be advantageous
• International travel may be required
• Police clearance is required
• Registration as a radiation worker may be required.

Knowledge and Skills :

Technical

• CAD software experience ideally in CREO with the Windchill product lifecycle management environment
• Knowledge of manufacturing processes
• Multi-discipline interface knowledge (specifically to electronics, electrical and C&I)
• Knowledge of configuration management principles would be advantageous,
• Suggest improvements on designs

Communication

• Able to seek clarity on requirements
• Clear, logical presentations, reports, verbal.
• Technical detail communications with technical peers.
• Interact across tech functions e.g. tech dev, tech support, manufacturing

Management

• Making and carrying out project plans for own work.
• Manage own time and delivery to meet project requirements.
• Comfortable with Peer Review of work (providing and receiving).
• Contributes to Mechanical discipline standards, strategies, processes and procedures and Community of Practice
• Supervision / oversight of work is required
• Interacting with established suppliers for standard items.
• Interacting with new suppliers to assess applicability of new items / components.

Mechanical Designer • Johannesburg, South Africa

Job Description :

The organisation is looking for a permanent employee to reinforce our Design Office.
The successful candidate will primarily be tasked with designing all exterior outfitting aspects on our yachts, including deck layout, technical areas arrangement, transom and tender mechanical cinematic systems, production and machining drawings, and deck hardware design and updates.

This post is based at our manufacturing site in Athlone Industria, Cape Town.

The applicant must hold SA citizenship, permanent residency, or another form of accepted work visa.

JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Regularly reporting to the Design Office Supervisor, the successful candidate will undertake the following tasks:

• Be in close relation with the Technical Coordinator
• Take into account specifications and keep updated on rules and regulations
• Be a force of proposals to decision makers
• Produce 3D models and sub-assemblies using SolidWorks
• Use 3D models to check interaction with interior and structure
• Produce 2D production drawings and prepare relevant CNC files
• Liaise with sub-contractors and designers to ensure design integration

CORE COMPETENCIES, ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS and PREFERENCES

Educational:
BSc Mechanical Designer

Experience/Technical:
2+ years’ experience working in mechanical systems. Experience in the yachting industry is a very strong plus.
Solid experience in 3D parametric modeling (SolidWorks or similar) and 2D drawing (Draftsight or similar) is required.
Good practical sailing knowledge is desirable.
