Mintek has an exciting career opportunity for a Research Engineer in the Pyrometallurgy Division. The successful candidate is to conduct cutting edge applied research in the design, development and demonstration of fit for purpose pyrometallurgical processes and technologies. The role requires a strong understanding of pyrometallurgy fundamentals, with particular emphasis on leveraging knowledge of thermochemical simulations, phase equilibria, reaction kinetics, andengineering design to deliver complex pilot scale research and technology demonstration projects.   • Demonstrated ability to develop experimental techniques, models and prototypes.
  • Experience with designing and operating electric arc furnaces at pilot-scale, coupled with the abilityto identify opportunities for further fundamental research from inconclusive or unclear phenomenontypically observed in pilot scale research projects.
  • Experience in designing pyrometallurgical processes using thermochemical simulation software tools such as PyroSim and FactSage is an added advantage.
  • Proven experience with coding in C and Python is an added advantage.
  • Proven experience in mechanical design packages such as FUSION360 or FreeCAD is an added advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop experimental techniques, models and prototypes.

  • Strong portfolio of publications in peer-reviewed journals is an added advantage.
  • Knowledge or experience with SHEQ systems is non-negotiable
  • Knowledge of technology transfer, commercialisation and product development is highly advantageous.
  • Demonstrated ability to attract investment or R&D funding is highly advantageous.
Qualification and Experience Requirements
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in pyrometallurgy research and technology development.
  • Minimum BEng/BSc (Honors) in Engineering (Metallurgical/ Chemical / Process/ Mechanical/Electrical) or equivalent, with a strong emphasis on pyrometallurgy research and technology development.

The Role:

We seek a Research Engineer to join our research team and play a key role in advancing our mission to build cutting-edge AI models for decision-making with application to large-scale industrial optimisation. You will be involved in all aspects of the research process, including:

Developing and implementing high-quality Python code in a production-level environment.

Distributing and accelerating code on large-scale accelerator clusters.

  • Algorithmic Optimisation: Research and understand the latest deep learning literature to implement and optimise state-of-the-art algorithms and architectures, ensuring compute efficiency and performance.
  • Algorithmic Design: Identify limitations in the application of existing state-of-the-art algorithms for our desired use cases, and propose concrete algorithmic contributions to mitigate those limitations and improve upon existing state-of-the-art.
  • Scaling Expertise: Design and implement strategies to efficiently scale machine learning models across different accelerator platforms (GPU/TPU).
  • Performance Optimisation: Analyse and profile ML systems under heavy load, pinpointing bottlenecks and implementing targeted optimisations.
  • Distributed Systems Architecture: Create robust distributed training and inference solutions for maximum computational efficiency.

Required Skills:

  • A Masters or equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related field.

Job Summary



The National Electric Energy Testing, Research and Application Center (NEETRAC) is a not-for-profit Testing, Research & Application Center that serves the electric utility industry of North America. NEETRAC is looking for flexible, motivated and skilled engineering staff. This position is for an electrical engineer who will serve as a principal investigator and understudy in the medium and high voltage testing laboratories. Over time this engineer will be a principal investigator on increasingly large and complex projects for a wide variety of research and testing needs funded by our members. The job is physically located at the NEETRAC Laboratory Campus in Forest Park, GA.

A successful candidate will undertake a number of Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Participate in multiple projects in parallel.
  2. Display a thorough understanding of electrical principles.
  3. Partner with NEETRAC customers to develop project proposals from their technical needs.
  4. Conduct robust and practical experimental programs.
  5. Undertake laboratory and field testing, in a hands-on role, both individually and as part of a team.
  6. Recommend project ideas / improvements to NEETRAC Members.
  7. Undertake the curation and analysis of utility performance / measurement data.
  8. Undertake travel for field work and technical interactions with members, as required.

Required Qualifications



  • A Master's degree and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree, or
  • A Master's degree and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree

About NEETRAC

The National Electric Energy Testing, Research and Applications Center (NEETRAC) is a 36-member consortium of electric utilities, manufacturers, and service providers that delivers testing, research, and application development services. These services help solve their technical problems while advancing electric energy technologies. NEETRAC's unique model is based on collaboration between utilities, manufacturers, and other industry entities to address critical challenges in the electric power industry at both transmission and distribution levels. NEETRAC's mission is to deliver solutions that enhance reliability, improve safety, and support the development and application of electric energy technologies for its members. The distinct interests of NEETRAC's membership provide a dynamic work environment with extensive interaction to address real-world issues and identify opportunities on how to solve them.

Job Summary



The Director of NEETRAC is a pivotal leadership role responsible for guiding the strategic direction, operational management, and overall performance of the center. The Director will lead research initiatives, oversee testing and consulting services, foster industry partnerships, and ensure the effective dissemination of knowledge. This position requires a visionary leader with some technical background in electric energy systems, outstanding management skills, outstanding business development/sales skills, and a commitment to advancing the electric energy delivery industry. This position will be at the level of Senior or Principal Research Associate/Engineer/Scientist. This is a full-time on-site position; remote work is not expected on a regular basis.

Work Environment: On-site (This position requires physical presence at NEETRAC's Campus). Must live within driving distance of NEETRAC or relocate to start work (relocation assistance will be provided).

Travel: up to 50% (first year), then up to 30% afterwards


Responsibilities



Key Responsibilities: In collaboration with the NEETRAC's leadership team, the Director's responsibilities include:

1.Strategic Leadership:

  • Develop and implement the strategic vision and goals for NEETRAC in collaboration with members, the leadership team and the ECE school chair.
  • Identify and prioritize research areas and projects that align with member needs and NEETRAC's mission.
  • Drive innovation and thought leadership in electric energy technologies and systems.
  • Lead the development of the organization by maintaining existing members, recruiting new members, and identifying additional funding sources as appropriate.

2.Operational Management:

  • Lead a staff (direct reports) that currently includes Associate Directors, Director of Business Operations, Research Operations Program Manager, Engineering Supervisor, and Technician Supervisor,
  • Oversee operations of NEETRAC, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of services to its members.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Research & Development (R&D)

  2. Product Development
    • Develop and test cleaning chemicals such as degreasers, surface disinfectants, descalers, and sanitizers.

  3. Laboratory Management

  5. Regulatory Compliance
    • Assist in the preparation and review of Safety Data Sheets (SDS), product labels, and technical data sheets.
    • Ensure all formulations comply with applicable standards (e.g., GHS, REACH, CLP, EPA).
    • Support audits and documentation for certification bodies where applicable (e.g., ISO, ecolabels).
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree (BSc) or higher in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in chemical formulation, preferably in cleaning, detergent, or disinfectant products.
  • Strong knowledge of surfactants, solvents, preservatives, and formulation science.
  • Experience in lab management and product scale-up.
  • Familiarity with regulatory frameworks (GHS, REACH, CLP, local chemical regulations).
