Job Description

The Quality Assurance (QA) Team Leader is responsible for leading and managing a team of QA Consultants in monitoring and evaluating the performance of consultants within the Operations contact centre. They will also be responsible for coaching their team, developing and implementing comprehensive QA processes and guidelines, conducting regular quality assessments, reporting on quality trends, and providing feedback. The role will report to the Head of Shared Services division in Operations.

The Team Leader will be responsible for formulating plans and strategies for the implementation of QA solutions in the Operations business areas to check and maintain the quality of work against business standards which leads to a positive client experience.

Key Responsibilities

Qualifications and Experience
  • Matric/Grade 12.

  • Preferably a minimum of 3 years’ experience as a Team Leader.

    Duties & Responsibilities

    Quality & Food Safety

    • Monitor and evaluate product quality throughout the production process, from raw materials to finished products, to identify and address any quality concerns that may arise, ensuring that the highest quality products are dispatched from Freys Food Brands.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Production, Procurement, and Technology and Innovation, to implement quality improvement initiatives and resolve quality-related defects/concerns.
    • Continuously improve the food safety documented traceability system for the company to ensure proper root cause analysis.

    Supplier Quality Assurance

    Total Management Quality Systems

    • Develop, review, implement and improve all SOPs related to Quality and Food Safety.
    • Maintain accurate records and documentation related to quality assurance activities, including audits, inspections, and corrective actions.
    • Ensure that all relevant SOPs related to quality and food safety are up to date and readily accessible for audits, training, traceability purposes etc.

    Training and Development

    • Develop, implement, and maintain quality assurance policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
    • Develop and co-ordinate talent management, development programs, objectives and performance appraisals for the Quality Assurance Management department.
    • Liaise with HR on the co-ordination of compliance training for relevant stakeholders such as FSSC, HACCP, Internal auditing training.
    • Develop and deliver training programs on quality assurance and food safety practices for employees of all levels of the company.
    • Drive a culture of quality and food safety throughout the company by promoting awareness, accountability, and continuous improvement.

    • Develop and maintain the approved departmental budget and adhere to cost allocation.

    People Management

    • Manage the Quality Assurance Management department (incorporated of quality and food safety) and provide ongoing guidance, supervision and support to achieve the company’s required targets.
    • Oversee, raise and close of any matters that may arise with the Freys Contracted Cleaning Company - Ecowise.
    • Communicate changes in processes and specifications and train the Quality Assurance Management department with related and up to date processes and procedures.

    Desired Experience & Qualification
    • Bachelor’s degree/B. Tech in Food Science, Microbiology, Chemistry, or a related field.
    • 5 - 6 years of experience in Quality Assurance and Food Safety Management in the food manufacturing/FMCG sector, meat industry preferable.
    • In-depth knowledge of food safety regulations, including but not limited to HACCP etc.

The successful candidate will use their technical expertise to drive quality systems within the business, ensuring compliance with food safety standards and regulations. You will oversee Quality Controllers and work closely with site management while playing a key role in customer communication. Key Responsibilities: Support production management with processing and assist in implementing solutions for quality and food safety challenges. Manage procedural reviews and implement new policies and procedures. Assess quality reports from QC checks and provide detailed summaries to management. Stay updated on food safety and quality regulations, ensuring full compliance at all times. Participate in the Food Safety Team and uphold Food Safety Principles across all sites. Take responsibility for QC teams to ensure full understanding of Food Safety Manual principles. Analyze non-conformances and follow up on corrective actions. Manage customer specifications and communicate quality issues or non-conformances to clients. Skills: Strong leadership and mentoring abilities. Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills. Ability to identify and apply fact-based, data-driven decision-making processes. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build relationships across all levels of the business. High attention to detail with a passion for fresh produce quality standards. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Food Science and Technology or a closely related field. Experience in a fast-paced food production environment is an advantage.
