About the role
The main function of the Machine Shop Supervisor is to lead, coordinate, and participate hands-on in all machining activities within the lighting factory. The role involves overseeing the operation of aluminium machining and metalworking equipment, planning daily work tasks, and ensuring that all machining operations meet quality and efficiency standards. This is a hands-on working supervisor role that requires an experienced artisan (fitter or equivalent) with strong leadership abilities. The machine shop produces primarily aluminium components used in the manufacturing of commercial and industrial lighting fittings.
Key Performance Areas:
Machine Shop Operations Operate and supervise the use of machining equipment including welding units, saws (automatic/manual), copy routers, drill presses, milling machines, and general machine shop equipment. Set up and maintain equipment for efficient and accurate production. Ensure safe operation and maintenance of equipment and tools.
Team Supervision & Tasking Allocate daily tasks to machine operators. Provide on-the-job guidance, coaching, and problem-solving. Monitor productivity and quality of subordinates' output. Support the professional development of machine shop staff.
Quality Control & Production Support Ensure that all workpieces meet required specifications and tolerances. Identify and rectify quality issues. Assist in the development and implementation of continuous improvement initiatives.
Health, Safety & Housekeeping Enforce health and safety regulations. Ensure safe working environment and compliance with company policies. Maintain a clean, organized workshop.
Planning & Reporting Plan machining work according to production schedules. Report material or tooling shortages. Contribute to weekly and monthly production reports.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL & ABILITY REQUIREMENTS
Required:
· Recognised Trade Certificate (Artisan) as Fitter, Fitter and Turner, Toolmaker, or similar mechanical trade. ·
· Minimum 6 years' hands-on experience in a machine shop environment, with at least 2 years at a supervisory or lead artisan level.
· Strong technical ability with machining aluminium and other light metals.
· Experience operating and maintaining manual and automatic machining equipment.
· Practical knowledge of aluminium welding, saws, routers, milling, drilling, and other fabrication processes.
· Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and work instructions.
· Sound understanding of health and safety regulations related to a machine shop environment.
· Good organizational skills and ability to prioritize and delegate tasks.
Advantageous:
· Previous experience in a manufacturing environment for lighting or similar industries.
· CNC machine programming or operation knowledge.
· Supervisory training or leadership certification.

Engineering Trade Certificate in Fitting and/or turning with 5-10 years’ experience within the Manufacturing and Engineering Industry. CNC Machine programming (Fanuc and Siemens).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
Ensure health, safety and environmental procedures and legal requirements are adhered to. Report any deviations to H&S Officer and/or Operations
Manager.
Accountable for conducting daily SHE inspections, acting on all deviations raised and informing the Manufacturing Manager and SHE department
Stop any unsafe act or condition and remedy such action or condition immediately.
Determine the tools and equipment needed to effectively complete a job.
Participate in the creation of the daily machine schedule providing feedback to feasibility, flow, and operator capacity. Ensure all machines are running in

Problem solving / Component Quality: Coordinate directly with QC department to validate part quality from QC reports. For any non-conforming issues,
validate part setup, tool builds, fixture requirements and machine geometry and coordinate data with the Project Engineer to achieve the required resolution and expected quality.
Using the forecasted machine schedule, proactively verify the machines are configured correctly with appropriate tooling, available tool life, and fixtures as required to meet the forecasted production schedule.
Develop, implement, and evaluate SOP s and WI s to maintain, troubleshoot, and improve processes related to: Machine maintenance, operator procedures, tooling procedures, pre-setting procedures, etc.
Actively mentors and participates in the training of machinists. Includes goalsetting and review, along with completion of annual performance review.
Must be proficient in interpreting drawings.
Hands on experience working with Fanuc and Siemens machine controls.
Direct experience with root cause analysis associated with CNC machine tools, cutting tools and human performance.
Passion for precision and efficiency
Machine programming languages (G-code)
Supervises daily machine shop floor activities to efficiently allocate resources and coordinates workflow as determined by available work and equipment and assigns daily production duties to machinist.
Collaborates with the Machine shop Superintendent to review and analyse production, quality control, maintenance, and operational issues to determine
causes of nonconformity, production shortfalls, and operating concerns for remediation and implementation of appropriate corrective action.
Partners with the maintenance department to identify and resolve equipment maintenance issues.
Oversee assembly fitting of components prior to machine set-up and machining.
Oversee final assembly of components.
Accountable for recording production activities into the Inventory/Production system within the Machine Shop and for online and postproduction variance analyses and corrective action.
Must have thorough working knowledge of programming software and be able to identify CNC programming issues and requirement changes.
Inspect completed work for conformance to specification using tools such as calipers, height gauges, micrometres, rulers etc.
Clocking on the job and validating employees’ hours daily.
