JOB DESCRIPTION

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties & Responsibilities

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The position aims to address undergraduate teaching to BPharm students in the subject of Pharmacy Practice in the School of Pharmacy, Faculty of Health Sciences. It includes supervision of both undergraduate and postgraduate students (i.e., MPharm in Pharmacy Practice) across the Faculty’s blended training platform, while strengthening and expanding research in the subject group and the research entity Medicine Usage in South Africa (MUSA).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Undergraduate Teaching and Learning (A7)/(A8):

  • Teaching and learning in the undergraduate BPharm programme (subject group: Pharmacy Practice) and be compliant with the South African Pharmacy Council requirements.
  • Co-ordination of a Pharmacy Practice module, with a specific focus on communication for pharmacists, which include study guide development and maintenance, lecturing, presentation of practical sessions, assessment (setting of papers, marking of scripts and moderation of papers), administration of student marks and other aspects related to the module.

Postgraduate Teaching (A7)/(A8):

  • Study guidance of postgraduate students in MPharm in Pharmacy Practice programme (three subprogrammes: Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacovigilance, Pharmaceutical Economics and Policy and Pharmaceutical Public Healthcare Governance).

Research (A7)/(A8):

  • Initiating and conducting research within the research entity, Medicine Usage in South Africa (MUSA), and the ability to write publications and funding applications relevant to the core focus of the entity.

Leadership, management, service to the University and social responsiveness (A7)/(A8):

  • Provide service to the University by contributing to the definition and achievement of its goals and enable it to be a healthy organisation. This includes being a member of faculty and subject group committees and working parties within the University.
  • Maintain an involvement in community service as a scholarly practice through the application of pharmacy practice knowledge and skills.
  • Administration and other tasks.
Desired Experience & Qualification
  • An MPharm degree or equivalent postgraduate qualification (NQF level 9) in Pharmacy Practice.
  • A bachelor of Pharmacy (NQF level 8).
  • Registered as a Pharmacist with the South African Pharmacy Council.
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ experience in lecturing to undergraduate students in a BPharm curriculum within the field of Pharmacy Practice.

Publish findings in reputable peer-reviewed journals and present research at international conferences. Collaborate with interdisciplinary health science teams to develop innovative AI-driven products and solutions tailored to medical and health science applications. Help nurture collaborations between the Faculty of Health Sciences at WITS and both the MIND institute and the School of Computer Sciences and Applied Mathematics at WITS. Provide mentorship and supervision of postgraduate students. Participate in securing external funding through grant applications and industry partnerships. Engage actively with industry stakeholders to ensure effective translation of research into viable products. Qualifications And ExperienceRelevant Master's degree (MSc) in Engineering, Physics, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline is required. A Ph D will be highly advantageous. Extensive experience in building and deploying AI solutions across diverse applications, including natural language processing, computer vision, statistical modeling, regression, AI agents and large language models and tools. The following will be advantageous: industry experience a proven track record of successful AI product design and deployments experience applying AI to medical and health-related research. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with proven ability to effectively collaborate in multidisciplinary environments.     Job Purpose:

    The role of a Lecturer is the delivery of training and education of students; student consultations; the establishment of a knowledge base of the discipline through academic research & development; whilst providing overall support to Academic department.

    Duties & Responsibilities:

    • Presenting content in a classroom environment (online or physical, as required)
    • Arranging for consultations with students.
    • Results analysis at a modular level.
    • Marking assessments and providing constructive feedback
    • Employing interventions for at-risk students.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Qualifications –

    - Honours degree, Bachelor’s degree or Advanced Diploma in Networking/ Computer Science/ IT Management/ Computing/ Computer and Information Sciences

    -Post Graduate Diploma in Higher Education or Equivalent

    • Experience –

    -1 to 3 years of industry-specific experience in area of specialisation

    -1 to 3 years lecturing experience.

    -Solid understanding of the South African Further Education and Higher Education environment and regulatory framework

    -Teaching-Learning theory

    -Assessment methods and processes

    -Teaching-Learning interventions
    -Holistic lecturer and student support services

    Key Competencies (Academic):

    • Knowledge and understanding of the South African higher education systems and regulatory framework.
      Knowledge and understanding of the Teaching and Learning theory and interventions.
    • The ability to provide student support services.
    • The ability to work with and learn more about digitalized academic platforms.
    • The ability to cope with a frequently changing environment and to adapt to evolving situations.
    • Ability to adhere to rules and strictly follow work regulations.
    • Deadline orientated and can work well under pressure.
    • Ability to manage time effectively.

    • Knowledge and understanding of the South African higher education systems and regulatory framework.
