Perform General Duties:
Carrying out the normal duties and functions which occur within a professional Laboratory Service. These duties and functions include, interalia: -
- Responsible for the day-to-day working of the Laboratory to achieve an efficient and cost-effective service.
- Conduct routine and urgent testing of specimens in a Pathology Laboratory; perform routine maintenance, calibrations and quality control on laboratory equipment and analysers.
- Record the temperature of the room, fridges, freezers and incubators as per the work procedure.
- Complete the required logs i.e. maintenance/health and safety/decontamination etc.
- Sound knowledge of relevant laboratory equipment.
- Maintenance on all equipment used for analysis – ensuring all controls and calibrations are done on all relevant equipment.
- Check quality controls to release results in accordance with Westgard Rules.
- Reagent/IQC lot-to-lot validations must be completed timeously.
- Levy Jennings quality control charts must be printed and reported on.
- Ensure that all urgent samples are given priority.
- Ensure instrument raw data has been scanned onto the LIS.
- To assist Specimen Reception with receiving specimens, Data Capturing and Demo checking of patient requests.
- Validate and sign out of lab results.
- Ensure all outstanding tests are completed per department.
- Required to give out results telephonically.
- Reagent preparation when necessary.
- Evaluate new techniques in consultation with the laboratory manager.
- Supervise and train new staff in the laboratory to ensure an acceptable standard.
- Troubleshoot to prevent serious or unacceptable incidents involving specimen samples.
- Report all malfunctions to the lab manager / relevant department manager.
- Ensure that relevant protocols are maintained and updated.
- To participate and assist in laboratory projects/audits.
- Report lab results.
- Perform EQA analysis.
- Results submission.
- Troubleshooting.
- Monitor stock status i.e. stock take, stock ordering and stock receiving.
- Ensuring all paperwork is completed with service reports.
