CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

To facilitate teaching and research of Zoology under- and post graduate students and staff within the Zoology Department, by managing the technical aspects of the department including equipment, vehicles, boats, and animal husbandry.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
  • Provide technical and mechanical assistance to the Department with the operating, maintenance and servicing of equipment, and manufacturing or purchasing parts for equipment if not available.
  • Provide technical assistance to students and staff by designing and setting up experimental systems and equipment for terrestrial and aquatic projects.
  • Required to design and manufacture specific or specialized equipment for laboratory and field research.
  • Manage the maintenance and servicing of equipment regularly and, if faulty, order/obtain quotes for repairs or new installation of equipment on the financial ITS system.
  • Manage the liaison with external contractors and other service providers of the Zoology Department.
  • Manage the maintenance of boats and vehicles in the Zoology Department to comply with safety and operational standards.
  • Provide skippering of research vessels on estuaries and in the marine environment and maintain vessel accreditation and seaworthiness.
  • Manage research aquarium and maintain animal husbandry and animal ethics standards for marine and terrestrial projects.
  • Oversee fieldwork support for student projects and excursions.
  • Manage safety, health and environmental compliance in all areas of responsibilities of the Zoology Department for compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act of SA.
  • Monitor and control the expenditure, operating, and capital budgets of the laboratory and field equipment of the Department.
  • Management of technical and laboratory assistant staff to ensure effective teamwork in accordance with Departmental requirements and functionality.
  • Perform purchasing to meet operational needs in accordance with University policies and procedures.
  • Doing standby duty, and being contactable 24 hours, for breakdowns and malfunctioning equipment.

CORE COMPETENCIES

  • Knowledge and experience to manage the maintenance and basic repairs to vehicles, trailers, and boats; including outboard motors and boat trailers.

  • Possess advanced technical knowledge to manage the use and repairs of field and laboratory equipment serving the Zoology research and teaching environment.

  • Possess good leadership and management skills.

  • Knowledge and experience of animal husbandry and aquarium keeping.

  • Extensive boating knowledge and sea-going experience, with relevant qualifications (Category C, STCW95/10 Certification).
  • Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act as it applies to the NMU workspace.
  • Possess good knowledge of financial principles and practices working within administrative systems.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Possess computer skills to carry out responsibilities (word processing, email, internet, spreadsheets).
REQUIREMENTS

In order to be considered for appointment to this post, candidates should:

1) Possess a B.Sc. Hons degree in Zoology/Animal Science (an M.Sc. degree would be advantageous).

2) At least three years of relevant work experience in an academic or research environment in which competency has been gained in animal husbandry and live animal keeping systems.

3) Category C boat skippers certification, registered through South African Maritime Safety Association with > 5 years of skippering experience, including surf launching of vessels.

4) STCW95/10 Certification (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers).

5) Candidates must possess an unendorsed EB drivers license and be prepared to obtain a Public Drivers Permit for this job.

6) Possess four-wheel-drive, off-road driving experience, including vehicle recovery expertise.

This is a dual role that combines laboratory support with administrative and personal assistance. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing laboratory procedures while also assisting with scheduling, communication, and organizational tasks.

Key Responsibilities:

Laboratory Technician Duties:

  • Receive, log, and track incoming biological samples.
  • Prepare samples for analysis, including nucleic acid extraction.
  • Perform molecular biology techniques, including PCR (conventional and/or real-time).
  • Assist in maintaining accurate laboratory records, databases, and chain of custody logs.
  • Monitor and maintain laboratory inventory, reagents, and consumables.

  • Coordinate communication with local and international research collaborators.

Research & Academic Support:

  • Assist with the preparation and submission of research proposals, ethical approvals, and academic manuscripts.

  • Track research project timelines, deliverables, and reporting obligations.

Travel & Event Coordination:

  • Organize national and international travel including visa arrangements, accommodation, transport, and itineraries.

Financial & Procurement Administration:

  • Support with processing reimbursements, travel claims, and budget tracking related to research projects.
  • Assist in procurement processes for laboratory or office supplies, ensuring compliance with UKZN procurement policies.

Student & Team Support:

  • Serve as a liaison for postgraduate students and research staff reporting to Professor Ramsuran.
  • Coordinate schedules, progress meetings, and documentation related to student supervision.

Requirements & Qualifications:

  • At least five years experience applying supervised and unsupervised machine learning methods (e.g., neural networks, gradient boosting, clustering) to environmental or geophysical datasets, including development of approaches to improve predictive skill and model performance;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with large, sparse, and heterogeneous datasets, including gap-filling, noise reduction, spatiotemporal post-processing, and integration of observational and model outputs;

Organizational Overview

The Environmental & Climate Sciences Department (ECSD) ) at Brookhaven National Laboratory focuses on a wide range of theoretical, experimental, and field studies in support of the U.S. Department of Energy's climate and energy research agendas. Work is supported by the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) User Facility ), an observations-based program that measures aerosols, clouds, precipitation, radiation, and atmospheric dynamics; the Atmospheric Systems Research Program ), and the Environmental System Science Program ). This work is pursued with the ultimate goal of improving predictability and reducing the uncertainty in global and regional climate models. The department research portfolio also includes development of environmental technologies and applications for renewable energies, urban science, and national security.

The Aerosol Chemistry & Microphysics Group ) within ECSD is focused on improving process-level understanding of aerosol formation and evolution mechanisms, aerosol absorption, and the direct and indirect influences that aerosols have on clouds, precipitation and climate. Understanding the physics, chemistry and dynamics of interactions along this aerosol-cloud-precipitation continuum is crucial for development of a predictive understanding of the climate system.

Position Description

The Aerosol Chemistry & Microphysics Group seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate to advance understanding of the atmospheric boundary layer dynamics that control the spatial distribution and timing of new particle formation (NPF) – the formation of new aerosol from gas-phase precursors. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in aerosol instrument development, observational field deployments, and the synthesis of observational data sets of atmospheric boundary layer dynamics and aerosol properties. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

NPF is an important environmental nano-scale process, with field measurements and modeling studies indicating that freshly formed particles can contribute significantly to the global population of aerosol and cloud condensation nuclei. While there have been an increasing number of NPF measurements from surface-based platforms, there have been very few measurements of vertically-resolved NPF from aerial platforms. Vertically-resolved atmospheric NPF measurements are needed because aerosol formation in the upper troposphere may be a significant source of cloud condensation nuclei. Furthermore, these vertically-resolved measurements are needed to connect the atmospheric conditions that drive atmospheric NPF with large-scale boundary layer transport processes and meteorology. In this project, we will be utilizing observations of boundary layer dynamics and vertically-resolved nanoparticle concentrations ) to understand how local micrometeorology and boundary layer dynamics control the evolution and distribution of boundary layer aerosol properties and processes.

Experience with using in-situ observations of newly formed aerosol A record of publication in high quality, internationally recognized journals

BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness, or other life-changing events. Strategy and Development

  • Contribute to the creation and implementation of best practices processes and procedures to aid and improve operational performance and timeous availability of product to market.
  • Contribute to new business initiatives and projects.

Operational activities:

  • Coordinate the compilation of artwork packs in line with internal procedures and legal requirements
  • Implement PPM codes, barcodes and CCP's (initiated by Regulatory Department), where necessary in line with departmental policies and procedures
  • Liaise with Supply, Regulatory Affairs, Marketing and Design department to ensure operational and legal requirements are met
  • Liaise with external stakeholders and suppliers, including printers and packers, to ensure artwork projects are delivered on time
  • Proactively plan implementation and availability of printer proofs at supplier/printers
  • Assist with the implementation and coordination of departmental operational activities to ensure timeous launch of new and existing brands
  • Monitor non-conformances and provide a progress report timeously to Associate Director: Compliance & Pharmacovigilance
  • Review artwork components in line with legal requirements and business needs as per agreed timelines
  • Coordinate and manage the alignment of artwork and safety updates for the export market.
  • Conduct thorough research into all the relevant ingredients of mostly all complementary products and add the information in the relevant folder
  • Drive the implementation for safety information for the South African and Export markets of the complementary products
  • Assist in managing technical complaints and answer patient queries
  • Assist with the approval of advertising and promotional material of complementary products
  • Assist in managing and maintaining safety of all products in line with SAHPRA guidelines.
