Job Description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

Manager of research and research capacity development within the research entity Community - Based Educational Research (COMBER), as well as supervision of post graduate students and supporting staff to develop supervision capacity, conducting practice-led research, and producing research. To achieve the goals of the research entity within the university's research strategy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Preparation and implementation of a strategic research plan for the research entity within the university and faculty’s research strategy.
  • Preparation of applications and active actions for the acquisition of funds, facilities and equipment for the research entity through
  • independent initiatives and the activation of researchers’ potential in this regard.
  • Scholarly guidance, innovation and initiation with regard to research programmes in the research entity.
  • Plan and organize ways in which the research entity's research expertise can be marketed through the entering into income-driven research contracts and the undertaking of research projects for which a market exists.
  • Selection of researchers for participation in the programmes in the research entity, and participation in the task agreement planning for these researchers.
  • Implement the appropriate quality promotion and insurance systems and mechanisms to ensure high quality research outputs.
  • Manage the integration and participation of M & D students in programmes in the research entity.
  • Develop own professional and academic leadership and management skills, with a view to high-level academic guidance and research management in the research entity.
  • Organization and co-ordination of resources to meet targets, including staff, Master’s & PhD students, finances and equipment.
  • Engaged in the planning of staff structures, setting of posts and the appointment and evaluation of staff involved in the research entity.

Minimum Requirements

  • PhD in Education (NQF level 10).
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in higher education.
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ management experience or experience as a director within a research entity.
  • Completed supervision of master’s and of PhD students.
  • Have a proven and comprehensive publication record - especially over the last 5 years relevant to the field of Community - Based Educational Research.

The National Electric Energy Testing, Research and Applications Center (NEETRAC) is a 36-member consortium of electric utilities, manufacturers, and service providers that delivers testing, research, and application development services. These services help solve their technical problems while advancing electric energy technologies. Job Summary



The Director of NEETRAC is a pivotal leadership role responsible for guiding the strategic direction, operational management, and overall performance of the center. The Director will lead research initiatives, oversee testing and consulting services, foster industry partnerships, and ensure the effective dissemination of knowledge. This position requires a visionary leader with some technical background in electric energy systems, outstanding management skills, outstanding business development/sales skills, and a commitment to advancing the electric energy delivery industry. This position will be at the level of Senior or Principal Research Associate/Engineer/Scientist. This is a full-time on-site position; remote work is not expected on a regular basis.

Work Environment: On-site (This position requires physical presence at NEETRAC's Campus). Must live within driving distance of NEETRAC or relocate to start work (relocation assistance will be provided).

Travel: up to 50% (first year), then up to 30% afterwards


Responsibilities



Key Responsibilities: In collaboration with the NEETRAC's leadership team, the Director's responsibilities include:

1.Strategic Leadership:

  • Develop and implement the strategic vision and goals for NEETRAC in collaboration with members, the leadership team and the ECE school chair.
  • Identify and prioritize research areas and projects that align with member needs and NEETRAC's mission.
  • Drive innovation and thought leadership in electric energy technologies and systems.
  • Lead the development of the organization by maintaining existing members, recruiting new members, and identifying additional funding sources as appropriate.

2.Operational Management:

  • Lead a staff (direct reports) that currently includes Associate Directors, Director of Business Operations, Research Operations Program Manager, Engineering Supervisor, and Technician Supervisor,
  • Oversee operations of NEETRAC, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of services to its members.
  • Manage financial resources, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting as well as equipment and facilities.
  • Ensure compliance with the University System of Georgia standards, regulations, and protocols.

3.Research and Development:

  • Oversee the development and execution of research and testing programs, ensuring high-quality results.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement with a focus on engineering practices.
  • Provide strategic leadership and direction for research projects needs, collaborating with team members, academic faculty, and other Georgia Tech entities as needed.

4.Industry Engagement:

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with members ensuring that their needs are met and promoting NEETRAC's membership added value.
  • Represent NEETRAC and its members at industry conferences, workshops, technical committees, and other relevant meetings.
  • Act as a spokesperson and advocate for NEETRAC's mission and objectives.

5.Team Leadership:

  • Support the recruitment, mentoring, and development of a high-performing team of researchers, engineers, and administrative staff.

  • Promote professional development and continuous learning within the team.

6.Financial:

  • Set and meet NEETRAC revenue targets (P&L)

Academics are also expected to assume administrative, management, and/or leadership duties at the departmental, faculty, and/or university levels.

In the case of this position, the incumbent will be required to provide academic, administrative, and management leadership roles to enable the sustainability and flourishing of a research centre in the Department of Secondary and Post School Education, namely the Environmental Learning Research Centre . The ELRC is a leading research centre for the study of Environment and Sustainability Education in Africa. Its core objective is ‘To facilitate critical and innovative environmental learning and related research for just, transformative societies and sustainable environments in Africa and the global South’. It aims to

  • Produce credible knowledge of education, training and social learning practices focusing on African social-ecological contexts and issues.
  • Provide tailored educational products and services to enhance educational quality and innovation in Africa and the global South.
  • Strengthen and contribute to durable knowledge institutions and African networks promoting social-ecological resilience and sustainability education.
  • Promote and disseminate quality knowledge products by African scholars and practitioners on environment, sustainability, and learning.
  • Undertake focused advocacy with influential public and development agencies.

The role of the Director of the ELRC will involve inter alia, academic and administrative and management leadership to advance the following areas: teaching and learning; research; community engagement; and partnership building in the field of Environment and Sustainability Education.

The leadership contribution of this position should be evidenced firstly and foremost within the Research Centre, and through this at Departmental, Faculty and Institutional levels. It will involve providing academic (research, teaching, and supervision), as well as professional leadership and administrative management in Directing and leading the research programmes of the Environmental Learning Research Centre, which includes partnership building, fundraising and management to advance the objectives of the Research Centre.

The position will involve collaboration with the two research Chairs currently based in the ELRC, who will also provide mentoring support to the Director in the first few years of the position as required and relevant to the position.

The Requirements:

Associate Professor:

  • PhD in Education (Environment and Sustainability Education or closely related education or learning science fields) and at least 5 years of research project/programme management leadership and experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience in providing research leadership and research project and/or programme management in the field of Environment and Sustainability Education (ESE) / Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) or a closely related education or learning sciences field, with a multi-institutional, national and international focus or reach.
  • Research supervision of Master's and PhD degrees will be a strong advantage and/or extensive complementary experience supervising complex research teams and projects involving post-graduate scholars at an international level with more complex partnership structures.
  • National profile in the field.
  • Teaching in Environment and Sustainability Education (ESE) / Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) or a closely related field, preferably at post-graduate levels.
  • Track record of administration, management, and project management leadership roles, including project or programme fundraising, programme management and management of strategic partnerships in project, programme and/ or institutional contexts.
  • The ability to speak more than one South African language will be an advantage.


Senior Lecturer:


  • PhD in Education (Environment and Sustainability Education or closely related education or learning science fields) and at least 3 years of research project/programme management leadership and experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience in providing research leadership and research project and/or programme management in the field of Environment and Sustainability Education (ESE) / Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) or a closely related education or learning sciences field, with a multi-institutional, national and international focus or reach.
  • Research supervision of Master's degrees will be a strong advantage and/or extensive complementary experience supervising complex research teams and projects involving post-graduate scholars at the national level with smaller groups of partners.
  • Emerging international profile in the field.
  • Teaching in Environment and Sustainability Education (ESE) / Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) or a closely related field, preferably at post-graduate levels, may also include teaching in professional and/or community-engaged contexts and/or undergraduate level.
  • Track record of administration, management, and project management leadership roles, including project or programme fundraising, programme management and management of strategic partnerships in project, programme and/ or institutional contexts.
  • The ability to speak more than one South African language will be an advantage.
