Job Description

The Electronics Technologist/Instrument Technician for the mining laboratory is responsible for managing and maintaining the electronic instrumentation function in Technical Solutions two campuses in Jhb and one campus in Pretoria. The responsibility and accountability include ensuring the continuous improvement and effectiveness of the Site Services Department’s Maintenance system (SAP PM).

Key responsibilities:

Safety, Health & Environment:

  • Ensures that Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) matters are considered in all activities, with adherence to safety standards and procedures.
  • Operational risk management to provide and maintain, as far as reasonably practicable, a working environment that is safe and without risk to the employees, contractors and visitors.
  • Displays personal accountability and encourages similar accountability within the team.

Performance & Delivery:

Maintenance function and troubleshooting of:

  • Specialised laboratory equipment (e.g., Fusion, Density, Carbon Sulphur, XRF, XRD instruments)
  • Connection of instruments, computers, balances, etc. to Starlims and other programmes.
  • Ensure spares availability (Consumables and Critical spares).

Engineering Planned Maintenance System and Asset Management System:

  • Assigning job requisitions in the capacity of First Line Manager (FLM).
  • Installs and optimizes hardware/software/network products and configurations.
  • Routinely inspecting electrical, mechanical and pneumatic systems on the instruments.
  • Performs troubleshooting/fault finding of machine and equipment
  • Executing and managing assigned job cards.
  • Verify the completion of work, and accurately capture and maintain records in SAP PM.
  • Compilation of reports for submission to Site Services/Engineering Manager.

Assistance and support of Site Services with:

  • Various research projects and innovations
  • Adherence to Standard Operating procedures (SOP) and practices.
  • Support adherence to quality and safety standards, such as ISO Standard associated with the laboratory’s operations, safety and environmental requirements.
  • Ability to manage and lead maintenance teams including service contractors.
  • Be available for call outs and standby duties.
  • Design input, construction and execution.
  • Management of Quality systems and audits findings and related actions
  • Calibration of equipment and record keeping
  • Safety procedures for visitors and contractors
  • Perform any other reasonable duties as and when required.
Qualifications
  • Technical Diploma/Degree in Instrumentation, Electrical, and/or Mechatronics National Diploma in Elec Eng. (Light Current) i.e. S4 / N6 Technical Diploma (Light Current)
  • Trade Tested Artisan in Instrumentation/Electrical discipline.

EXPERIENCE

  • ± 3 - 5 years of experience working with analytical instrumentation, ideally including repair and maintenance in operations and/or similar environment,
  • Familiarity with Lab Equipment and understanding of basic machinery software.
  • Proficient in the use of SAP Maintenance system

Position Overview

The Desmond Tutu Health Foundation is currently recruiting for four (4) temporary Research Assistants (Citation Reviewers and Data Extraction) for an 8-week appointment starting 1 September 2025.

The main purpose of these positions is to support a research project by reviewing pre-identified academic citations, downloading full papers, extracting relevant information, and collating this data into a structured Excel spreadsheet.

Working hours are 27–30 hours per week at R215 per hour, with some flexibility in terms of when hours are worked. The expectation is that each reviewer completes extraction for approximately 60 papers per week, with key deadlines throughout the contract period. Work can be performed either at DTHF Headquarters (Woodstock) or remotely from anywhere with stable internet access.

  • Honours or Masters-level qualification (can be ongoing)

  • Ability to access and download peer-reviewed academic papers from online databases and journals (costs of non-open access papers will be covered by the employer)

  • Access and download assigned academic papers based on pre-identified citations
  • Extract key information and data points from each paper according to project requirements
  • Record extracted data accurately into a supplied Excel spreadsheet template
  • Maintain progress of ~60 papers reviewed per week
  • Adhere to set deadlines while managing workload flexibly
  • Communicate with the project lead on any challenges or issues encountered
  • Ensure data collation is complete, accurate, and audit-ready

Support feasibility activities around microarray patches (MAPs) for ART delivery. Ensure adherence to study protocol and SOPs. Participate in training and regular study meetings. We are seeking a dedicated and skilled individual to join the Histology and Imaging Core in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology at New York Medical College. The histotechnologist is responsible for day-to-day operations of the core providing routine histology and special staining, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and cryotomy services to the research community at NYMC and outside entities and to maintain the laboratory.

Responsibilities
  • Perform histology procedures including tissue processing, embedding, sectioning, staining, and mounting of tissue samples
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments
  • Maintain accurate records
  • Adhere to laboratory safety protocols and quality control standards
  • Prepare reagents and solutions for laboratory procedures
Qualifications

Education requirement: High School Diploma. An associate degree in histotechnology from a program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) is optional

Licenses or certifications: American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification's Histotechnician License (preferred)

Technical/computer skills: Proficient computer skills for data entry and result reporting

Prior experience: At least two years of experience working in a clinical or research laboratory setting

Other skills/requirements: Familiarity with laboratory techniques such as immunohistochemistry and molecular diagnostics. Experience with using cryostat and preparing frozen sections. Effective communication skills. Ability to multitask and prioritize workload.

Physical demands: Ability to stand and walk for prolong periods. Manual dexterity. Visual acuity.

Environmental demands: Exposure to hazards (chemicals, biologic materials) require use of personal protective equipment (gloves, mask, lab coat, etc). Some laboratory equipment (e.g., cryostat) pose certain hazards and should be handled with caution. UNU-WIDER is looking for an outstanding individual with strong data skills, commitment and potential to contribute to the SA-TIED programme.

About the work

Through the collaboration of UNU-WIDER, the National Treasury and the South African Revenue Service over the past few years, South African administrative micro tax data has been made available for research purposes. This puts South Africa at the forefront of big data research for development and puts the country in a novel position relative to other developing (and some developed) countries. The tax data — the global best practice in some avenues of research — has opened avenues for research in areas and topics that were not possible before in South Africa.

UNU-WIDER is looking for research assistants to build and expand the tax administrative and other microdata available at the National Treasury – Secure Data Facility (NT-SDF) in Pretoria. The research assistant(s) will work closely with the Data Developer at the NT-SDF.

Duties and responsibilities

Update the various tax datasets held at the NT-SDF on a rolling basis

Continually improve and expand the datasets

Perform quality assurance checks and analyse trends in the data

Assist in drafting, reviewing and revising documentation related to the data

Provide research assistance through data analysis, literature reviews, drafting documents

Assist researchers with data related queries and review their data output to ensure data confidentiality

Assist with day-to-day operations of running the National Treasury - Secure Data Facility

Other duties as requested by the supervisor related to the research and administrative work.

Requirements

Masters in Economics or Econometrics. Candidates who are close to completing their Masters will also be considered

Excellent skills in statistical software STATA (i.e., able to work with loops, globals, directories and writing STATA programs)

Knowledge of SQL, R, Python and ArcGIS is an advantage

Excellent analytical and drafting skills

Fluent in oral and written English

South African nationality, or the necessary residence, and work permit for South Africa

Terms

The Research Assistant will be issued a one-year consultancy contract with UNU-WIDER (renewable up to another year, subject to satisfactory performance). The Research Assistant will receive a total of USD19,620 for the contract period to supplement living expenses while stationed in Pretoria, South Africa. No extra payments for housing or living expenses will be made. Project-related costs will, however, be covered by the project.
