Job Purpose:

To provide professional knowledge and specialist individual expertise. Supervise the teams responsible for the quality control function, this may include analysis of stability samples to ensure compliance to specifications prior to release, initiating any relevant investigations and all team troubleshooting. Ensure that the scope of practise is met with regards to current Good Laboratory Practice in line with the local and international requirements.

Key Job Outputs:

  • Ensuring compliance with national / international regulatory requirements with respect to Quality Management Systems and current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) within QC laboratory.
  • Ensuring awareness of cGMP and cGLP among all personnel.
  • Ensuring that all Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) are initiated, reviewed, approved and implemented as per the required process. (When assistance is required by Support Manager).
  • Planning and allocation of stability work.
  • Ensuring that all Stability Products are tested in compliance to registered analytical methods and able to review the documents when required.
  • Assisting the Stability and Process validation Manager to ensure that there is a system for management and distribution of all GMP/GLP documents.
  • To be able to communicate all the products Out of specification and relevant updates to the Stability Program Manager.
  • Ensuring that all customer complaints and all the other testing required for analysis in the department are tested in accordance with the relevant SOP.
  • Ensuring that all Deviations and Change controls and CAPAs raised are properly documented, investigated and closed according to SOP.
  • Assisting and ensuring that Product Quality Reviews (PQR) documentation is being done for all products in accordance with SOP and the PQR schedule, review and sign the reports.
  • Ensuring participation and compliance with Out of Specification and Anomaly investigations and procedures.
  • Ensuring that all the other products received in the laboratory such as Intermediates, finished products and Raw materials are approved and Authorized when required.
  • Ensuring that Stability products and all the other products such as Finished products, Process validation and Raw materials received in the laboratory meet QC Standards, and cGMP SAHPRA requirements.
  • Reviewing and confirming the compliance of test results ensuring adherence to product release specifications.
  • Assisting with ensuring that all specifications, test methods and other quality control procedures are available.
  • Ensuring training of QC Laboratory personnel is conducted in accordance with relevant procedure for relevant teams.
  • Ensure all analysts are trained and competed to perform their duties and able to conduct training when necessary.

  • BSc degree/Diploma in Analytical Chemistry.

  • Minimum 5 years' experience in the QC laboratory, preferably pharmaceutical industry
  • Understanding of Quality Control, and Good Laboratory Practice guidelines and firm understanding of GLP requirement for generated data integrity
  • Good understanding of QMS.
  • Computer literacy, word, excel.
  • Review of analytical data will be an advantage
  • HPLC, UPLC, GC and AA experience required (minimum of the at least 3 of the 4 skills)

  • Drive corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) related to testing errors or deviations

  • Ensure safe laboratory practices and compliance with mill safety protocols

  • Report results and non-conformances to relevant departments in a timely manner

  • Plan maintenance and servicing of laboratory equipment; always ensure accuracy of equipment and results

  • Represent the laboratory during customer or auditor visits

  • Manage timeous collation of results and compilation of reports which will ensure actions taken are effective

  • Act as Deputy to the Food Safety Team Leader ensuring continuity and support of the Food Safety Management System

  • Assist the Manager with departmental functions such as assuming a second-in-charge role when required

  • Assist with ensuring compliance with FSSC 22000 through training validation / verification of control measures and maintenance of prerequisite programs requirements across the mill

We are seeking a Quality Control Lead with expertise in microbiology, environmental monitoring, and biological testing. The role oversees laboratory operations, ensures compliance with regulatory standards, and drives continuous improvement in microbiological quality systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead QC microbiology operations, including sterility testing, microbial identification, and bioburden analysis.
  • Oversee environmental monitoring programs for cleanrooms, utilities, and controlled areas.
  • Ensure adherence to GMP, GLP, and regulatory requirements (FDA, EMA, WHO, SAHPRA).
  • Review and approve test results, protocols, deviations, and CAPAs.
  • Train and mentor microbiology analysts, ensuring technical competency and compliance.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, QA, and regulatory teams to support product release and investigations.
  • Drive improvements in laboratory practices, data integrity, and contamination control strategies.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Microbiology, Biotechnology, or related life sciences field.
  • 6+ years' experience in pharmaceutical microbiology or biological QC testing, with at least 2 years in a leadership/supervisory role.
  • Strong knowledge of GMP regulations, environmental monitoring programs, aseptic techniques, and cleanroom standards.
  • Experience with microbial identification systems (e.g., MALDI-TOF, PCR-based methods).
  • Proven ability to manage teams, audits, and cross-functional projects.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Preferred:

  • Master's degree in Microbiology or related field.
  • Experience with vaccines, biologics, or sterile drug product manufacturing.
  • Prior involvement in regulatory inspections.
