About The Job
The CSIR has a vacancy for a
Laboratory Manager
in the Transport Infrastructure Engineering (TIE) Impact Area within Smart Mobility (SM) cluster. The incumbent will manage the operations of the laboratories in accordance with the objectives and requirements of the TIE group and SM cluster. This position is based in Pretoria.

Key Responsibilities

  • Overall management of laboratory systems and maintenance of applicable accreditations (all sections) ISO 17025, OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001;
  • Provide technical expertise to the Smart Mobility cluster;
  • Provide research and development support and testing for transport infrastructure research;
  • Serve as a technical signatory for areas managed;
  • Communicate with higher management regarding laboratory operations;
  • Outline laboratory needs and strategic plans;
  • Ensure expansion of testing capabilities;
  • Manage and develop human resources in the laboratory environment;
  • Optimise resource and equipment planning for the laboratories;
  • Ensure procurement of lab items and equipment are done efficiently;
  • Ensure lab sustainability by maintaining reagent and supply inventory;
  • Budget to achieve financial targets set for the laboratories and ensure financial sustainability;

Qualifications, Skills And Experience

  • A Bachelor degree in Science, Engineering or equivalent with at least eight years experience in the management of road engineering and materials testing laboratory
  • Proficient in MS Office;
  • Must have thorough understanding or training background in the requirements of ISO 17025 and knowledge of EHS systems;
  • Able to communicate technical information to a diverse audience drawing on sound understanding of scientific principles in solving complex problems;
  • Excellent interpersonal relationship and stakeholders liaison skills
  • Good communication skills (verbal and written);
  • Good interpersonal and team skills;
  • Ability to liaise with a diverse portfolio of people locally and internationally;

Your opportunity:

The Public History Lab is based at the Munk School and is led by Professor Timothy Snyder. Based on historical methods and approaches, the Lab’s mission is to demonstrate how historical context can inform contemporary political discourse by engaging directly with community members, writers, thinkers and policy-makers. The work starts from the assumption that research-based humanities scholarship can and should be shared as widely as possible.

The Manager, Public History Lab reports to the Lab Director. The incumbent will provide administrative support to the Director in areas including the administration of research grants and contracts, financial forecasting, budgeting and planning for the lab, the production of proposals for new funding, supervision of lab operations staff, and general office and facilities management. The Manager will engage in project management on a number of lab initiatives.

Your responsibilities
  • Administrative support of existing research grants and contracts including submission to University research office, negotiation of agreement terms, regular grant reporting including financials, liaising with internal University offices (legal, risk, etc.) to ensure agreements are compliant.
  • Identifying, developing and executing strategies for new funding proposals and collaborations. Liaising with academic units, central research and legal services and external stakeholders to support development of new research funding initiatives. Promoting research initiatives to external audiences and potential funders. Fostering and maintaining networks to build capacity and collaboration.
  • Building and strengthening relationships with stakeholders and partners of strategic importance. Promoting research initiatives, symposia and workshops to increase program visibility and reputation.
  • Planning and implementing activities and initiatives that contribute to the impact and growth of the lab including talks, conferences, training programs, etc. Includes operations and logistics planning such as budgeting, contracting, vendor selection and negotiations.
  • Producing complex reports involving statistical and/or financial information for funding agencies. Producing detailed statistical report and analysis in support of revenue generation/spending to support decision making.
  • Preparing project expense/revenue modelling, forecasting cost-to-completion and financial tracking for research grants and contracts and the lab as a whole.
  • Overseeing day-to-day administrative operation of the lab. Supervisory responsibility for security, operations, IT and financial staff. Works closely with Director, Citizen Lab and Executive Director, Munk School to support administrative HR needs (e.g., support the hiring process, onboard new employees, track absences, work schedules and mentoring staff).
  • Managing facilities and space requirements for the lab and maintaining the occupational safety and security of staff, premises and contents.
Essential Qualifications
  • Master's degree in History, or acceptable combination of equivalent experience. A PhD in History is an asset.
  • Six to seven recent and relevant years of experience in project management, academic and applied research, knowledge mobilization/translation, and multidisciplinary environments.
  • Relevant and recent experience providing a range of administrative support, including the administration of research grants and contracts, financial forecasting, budgeting and planning.
  • Experience working with diverse academic disciplines and units.
  • Proven ability to liaise, build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to bring projects to successful completion; determine resource shortages and react to prevent bottlenecks; collaborate with senior faculty and institutional leadership with confidence and tact.
  • Understanding of University HR environment, systems, procurement rules and budgeting.

After three years operating in Cape Town, we are looking for a strategic thinker who can elevate our work and the student experience, develop systems, and nurture relationships with our stakeholders. YOUR OPPORTUNITY FOR IMPACT

Oversee and lead TAL’s experiential learning: Design, facilitate, and manage powerful learning experiences by developing experiential learning activities in line with TAL’s curriculum.

  • Lead trainings, orientations, and learning and reflection activities with students.
  • Provide mentorship and coaching to students through their experience. Identify the learning moments of their experience and support their personal development.
  • Identify learning opportunities and develop relationships with local leaders/communities in Cape Town that support TAL’s learning outcomes and add value to students’ immersion in Cape Town.

Oversee students’ program preparation: In collaboration with your team, develop, implement and maintain student onboarding systems that ensure:

  • Students are prepared for their time in South Africa, through information sessions, written documentation, and timely responses to student and family inquiries.
  • Visas, travel plans, and other important information are properly tracked.
  • Proactive corrective action is taken with students who are not on track to participate in the program.

This is a rare opportunity to shape the future of our Take Action Lab: Human Rights program in Cape Town. As Program Manager, you’ll be the on-the-ground leader guiding students through a transformative, real-world learning experience while cultivating the local partnerships that make it possible. After three years operating in Cape Town, we are looking for a strategic thinker who can elevate our work and the student experience, develop systems, and nurture relationships with our stakeholders. YOUR OPPORTUNITY FOR IMPACT

Oversee and lead TAL’s experiential learning: Design, facilitate, and manage powerful learning experiences by developing experiential learning activities in line with TAL’s curriculum.

  • Lead trainings, orientations, and learning and reflection activities with students.
  • Provide mentorship and coaching to students through their experience. Identify the learning moments of their experience and support their personal development.
  • Identify learning opportunities and develop relationships with local leaders/communities in Cape Town that support TAL’s learning outcomes and add value to students’ immersion in Cape Town.
  • Manage TAL’s in-country budget.

Partnership management: as Tilting Futures’s lead on the ground, proactively develop relationships and maintain close contact and communication with local partners.

  • Establish weekly touch points with the local team to foster collaboration, provide support, and proactively address any challenges, ensuring smooth program planning and implementation.
  • Escalate administrative and/or operational issues to the Director of Global Programs that impact our relationship with the local partner or the sustainability of the program.
  • Proactively cultivate relationships with partners who can help us achieve our program goals in Malaysia.

Manage partnerships: As Tilting Futures’s lead in South Africa, proactively develop relationships and maintain close contact and communication with local partners.

  • Ensure smooth program planning and implementation with partners by fostering collaboration, providing support, and proactively addressing any challenges.
  • Proactively cultivate relationships with partners who can help us achieve our program goals in South Africa.
  • Escalate administrative and/or operational issues impacting the long-term sustainability of the program.

Oversee students’ program preparation: In collaboration with your team,develop, implement and maintain student onboarding systems that ensure:

  • Students are prepared for their time in South Africa, through information sessions, written documentation, and timely responses to student and family inquiries.
  • Visas, travel plans, and other important information are properly tracked.
  • Proactive corrective action is taken with students who are not on track to participate in the program.
  • Local partners receive timely information to allocate students’ apprenticeships and housing.

Lead Incident Management & Emergency Response: In collaboration with your team and specialized partners,support students’ socio-emotional health and learning, and provide effective response to health and safety incidents and emergencies.

  • Deliver training to students in risk mitigation, and health and safety protocols, with support from the Global team.
  • Lead the team managing health & safety incidents, coordinating with partners, team, and global staff in decision making, response and reporting, and leading response in escalated incidents.
  • Provide student emotional support during any hospitalization or other major incidents.
  • When on emergency duty, be available and remain within cell service at all times.
  • Directly communicate with students’ families during escalated incidents, in coordination with the Global Programs Team.

Team Management: build and lead a high-performing team passionately committed to empowering youth and driving impactful programs.

  • Hire, train, and retain a diverse, high-performing team.
  • Supervise and develop staff and contractors through 1:1s, coaching, feedback, and evaluation.

The following are required:

  • 5+ years of experience facilitating outdoor education, experiential learning and/or youth development programs for youth ages 17-25.
  • Experience managing and developing staff from different backgrounds.
  • Experience developing and delivering participatory training sessions and thematic seminars for different audiences e.g. youth, community stakeholders, non-profit organizations.
  • Experience cultivating and managing program partnerships.
  • Undergraduate degree (Bachelors or similar) in Education, Cultural Anthropology, Social Work, International Development, or other relevant field.
  • Legally able to live and work in South Africa full time.
  • Familiarity with South Africa’s social impact sector.
  • Spoken and written fluency in English.
  • All routine immunizations and vaccinations, including COVID-19, must be complete and up to date according to WHO guidelines.

Bonus points if have/are:

  • Experience managing health and safety protocols
  • Basic first aid training

A DAY IN THE LIFE

Day-to-day activities will depend on the stage in the program cycle: planning season & immersion experience.
