The role is responsible for the preparation and presentation of top-quality equity research to providethe necessary information to make well-informed investment decisions for the Stonehage Fleming Equity Management South Africa strategy and associated portfolios. The coverage universe is exclusively JSE listed equities.
PRINCIPAL ELEMENTS AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Conduct in-depth, high quality company and industry research as a critical input to add value
- Report formally on research projects by means of written reports and in person
- Make clear and appropriate conviction recommendations on the businesses under coverage, with substantiated supporting information, to generate benchmark and peer beating returns
- Take initiative in emphasising positive and negative opportunities amongst the full coverage universe
- Preparation for and attendance of Equity Management meetings with active participation
- Generate appropriate content for both internal and external usage on an ad hoc basis
- Undertake client facing activities as required
- Adhering to Investment Management and Group Compliance policies and procedures,undertaking appropriate regulatory training and dealing with potential breaches of compliance policies without delay
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 1 years working experience in listed equity analysis role
- Demonstrated track record of investment skill
- FAIS experience with the necessary (RE5) Representative Regulatory Exam would be an advantage. If not, then the candidate would have to undergo supervision to meet the fit and proper criteria.
- Working experience with Fact set or similar market software

Main Purpose of the Role
The Private Equity Financial Analyst requires analytical and technical skillset to drive high quality, timely and comprehensive research, datasets and financial modelling and valuations, that provide the investment team with reliable information on which to base its investment advice.
Being part of the investment deal team, there will be an opportunity to gain an in-depth and high-level overview of a specific sector and the technologies deployed therein. With experience, there is a growth opportunity for the Private Equity Analyst to have greater influence on the Companies investment advisory leadership through rigorous technical financial analysis and market expertise.
Day-to-day responsibilities will entail market research and analysis, origination of fund-fit deals, financial modelling in MS Excel, investment and fund valuations as well as assisting with the negotiation, execution, monitoring, and value creation, and exit of portfolio investments. The core role requires skills such as report writing, the drafting of deal papers and investment memorandums, MS Excel financial modelling and doing valuations for energy infrastructure project finance and growth equity or expansion capital companies .
To be actively involve in close interaction and cooperation with all offices and regional counterparts, as well as market and industry groups and other key third party stakeholders across its clean energy and resource efficiency specialised investment themes.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain and deliver reliable information to the deal team with the ongoing goal of improving the accuracy, completeness and coverage of financial analysis and sector datasets.
- Deliver accurate, high-quality analysis on prospective and post-investment financial models whilst applying problem-solving skills to identify innovative financing solutions.
- Work with a range of proprietary, industry standard, and open-source data stores to assemble, organize and analyse data.
- Develop research ideas, prototypes, and proofs of concepts both in cooperation with other data analysts/deal team members and as an individual.
- Liaise with investment team to contribute to the future development and strategic direction of the company.
- Continually expand existing technical knowledge in addition to new technologies and tools through training programs and available resources.
- Take ownership and be proactive with key areas of responsibility.
- A post-graduate degree (MBA, CFA, CA (SA), Masters in Finance or similar)
- 3-5+ Years in areas combining at minimum two of the following: financial analysis, financial valuation, data analysis, energy sector and/or project finance modelling and analysis.
- Experience gained growth equity experience (vs infrastructure) and / or experience at a PE fund (vs advisory) will be highly advantageous!
- Advanced financial modelling in MS Excel (project modelling, forecasting/budgeting, financial structuring, valuation methodologies, refinancing and M&A modelling, sensitivity and scenario analysis), including but not limited financial modelling and valuation skills in renewable energy infrastructure project finance and growth equity or expansion capital investments.
- In addition to advanced Excel (ideally experience with macros and VBA), strong PowerPoint, MS Word and MS Teams skills.
- Preparation skills in presentation including inputs to deal teasers, investment documentation and presentations, deal pipeline, and other supporting documentation and analysis.
- Proven data analytical skills and experience i.e. extraction, data management, data visualization, data modelling, data science, business analysis, project management.
- Proficiency in accounting treatment and tax.
- Willingness to travel within the African Region as well as abroad to international destinations for deal meetings, conferences and investor meetings.
- The ability to prioritize, multi-task, and deliver to deadlines.
- Creative problem-solving skills and strategic/analytical thinking.

JOB PURPOSE
To join a leading, top ranked, high-energy Equity Research Franchise in a junior analyst role, assisting the lead analyst in the sectors of PGMs, Gold and Oil and Gas. Develop sector coverage over time with the opportunity to develop into a lead role within the bank.
The ideal candidate must have very strong numeracy skills, be highly analytical, self-starting, creative and good at developing and presenting a view. Strong excel skills and attention to detail are critical. Being able to cope in a high-pressure environment will be essential.
A successful execution of the job steers client trade and a commission stream via the dealing platform of the broker. This advisory function is fulfilled through regular publication of investment ideas, company and sector updates, marketing of ideas and the organization of conferences and other corporate access activities. In addition, we anticipate that an analyst builds a network of executive contacts and, within the global regulatory framework, generates observations and ideas that may assist the primary capital teams of the bank.
Essential Functions
- The role will include responsibility for the broader bank’s PGM commodity forecasts, requiring global supply & demand modelling and PGM commodity pricing estimates.
- Assisting the Sector Head in conducting new and innovative research, assisting in publication of regular product and new thematic reports, updating and maintenance of existing models including sourcing new data sets.
- Attend roadshows alongside Sector Head including attendance to company results, corporate meetings and site visits.
- Complete and respond to ‘bespoke’ and ad-hoc client requests.
- Oversee the day-to-day activities of the research department, ensuring accuracy of work and that research content is marketable and actionable.
- Regularly and timeously write insightful and impactful research that results in a product suite that encompasses sector and company notes, thematic and periodical publications, comments on news-flow and its impact of share valuations.
- Develop skills and knowledge base to a point where the analyst can initiate coverage of relevant and commercial number of stocks in the allocated sectors.
- Market the investment ideas to domestic and offshore based global investors. Marketing consists of face-to-face road show meetings, conference calls, tele-marketing, etc.
- A combination of the above is expected to result in a measurable progression of an Analyst franchise (= own and broker/bank brand combined) with institutional investors as measured in the customary broker performance reviews and external broker surveys.
- Inform and work with Sales and Trading, within compliance framework, to optimise the marketing and execution of investment ideas.
- Pro-actively pass interesting and commercial ideas on the counterparts in CIB for instance in ECM, DCM, M&A and broader corporate finance functions.
- Develop a sector coverage and product strategy to effect, establish and grow a leading research franchise.
- Oversee coverage of relevant commercial stocks in the allocated / targeted sectors and companies to maintain up-to-date market data, knowledge of current events and to identify key developments.
- Oversee the development of commercial and differentiated research reports / publications, and monitor the process of analysis and recommendations to ensure consistent quality deliverables.
- Oversee the distribution of research product/ commercial ideas to counterparts in Corporate Investment Banking (CIB) e.g. ECM, M&A and Coverage and broader corporate finance functions to generate leads.

- Financial Modelling and Forecasting : Develop and refine financial models for budgeting, forecasting future performance, and cash flow forecasting. Provide actionable insights to guide the company's financial planning and resource allocation.
- Monthly Management Accounts and Cash Flow Forecasting : Assist in the timely preparation of monthly management accounts and develop accurate cash flow forecasts to manage liquidity effectively and plan for future financial needs.
- Financial Risk Management : Identify financial risks and opportunities through detailed financial analysis. Implement strategies to mitigate risks and leverage opportunities to enhance financial performance and stability.
- Technology – Financial Systems Implementations and Enhancements : Lead and support the implementation and enhancement of financial systems and technologies to improve financial data collection, analysis, and reporting capabilities.
