This position reports to:

Global Trade Compliance Officer

Your Role and Responsibilities

In this role, you will ensure that local businesses in assigned areas conduct their activities in line with ABB trade policies and guidelines, and implement ABB's Global Trade Program. You will be responsible for ensuring compliance with import/export-related trade regulations at a local level. You will also create, document, and maintain procedures and guidelines for export control, sanctions, and customs compliance requirements.

The work model for this role is: Hybrid .

This role contributes to the Finance Division in the SSA Region.

Key Responsibilities
  • Providing periodic updates to relevant stakeholders on the status of local implementation of ABB's Global Trade Program and changes in export control and customs laws/regulations.
  • Implementing and maintaining an export control and customs compliance awareness program for local staff, including trade-related training.
  • Facilitating seamless connection between trade compliance and daily operations, including master data requirements, supplier qualification, and collaboration with staff in the assigned area.
  • Conducting local trade reviews and annual self-audits to identify improvement areas and implement corrective actions.

Qualifications for the Role
  • Bachelor's or Honours Degree in International Trade, Supply Chain, Economics, or a related field.
  • Over 5 years of professional experience, including more than 3 years specializing in Trade Compliance, mainly export controls, with deep expertise in regional regulatory frameworks, from local customs to international sanctions.
  • Strong knowledge of export controls (Required).
  • Experience with Free Trade Agreements and classifications under the WCO Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS).
  • Familiarity with US Export Administration Regulations and global sanctions frameworks, including EU and US sanctions and embargo programs.
  • Knowledge of Global Trade Management systems, such as SAP-GTS.
  • Certified Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) is a plus.

Your Role And Responsibilities

In this role, you will have the opportunity to ensure that local businesses in assigned areas conduct their activities in line with ABB trade policies and guidelines and to implement ABB's Global Trade Program. Each day, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with import/export-related trade regulations at a local level. You will also showcase your expertise by creating, documenting, and maintaining procedures and guidelines for export control and sanctions, as well as customs compliance requirements.

The work model for the role is: Hybrid

This role is contributing to the Finance Division in SSA Region

You will be mainly accountable for:

  • Providing periodic updates to the relevant stakeholders on the status of the local implementation of ABB’s Global Trade Program and significant changes in export control and customs laws/regulations.
  • Implementing and maintaining a general export control and customs compliance awareness program for local business staff and providing trade-related training to employees (particularly in cases of delegated export control responsibilities).
  • Facilitating seamless connection between trade compliance and day-to-day operations, including master data requirements, supplier qualifications, etc., in collaboration with staff in the assigned area.
  • Conducting local trade reviews and/or annual “self-audits” with respect to trade compliance, identifying improvement areas, and taking corrective actions.

Qualifications For The Role

  • Bachelor’s or Honour’s Degree in International Trade, Supply Chain, Economics or Related Field
  • Over 5 years of comprehensive professional experience, including more than 3 years specializing in Trade Compliance mainly export controls, with deep expertise in regional regulatory frameworks—ranging from local customs regulations to international export controls and sanctions compliance.
  • Strong export controls knowledge (Required)
  • Experienced in Free Trade Agreements and classifications under the World Customs Organization (WCO) Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS).
  • Familiar with the US Export Administration Regulations and the global sanctions framework, including EU and U.S. sanctions and embargo programs.
  • Knowledge of Global Trade Management systems (active use of SAP-GTS)
  • Certified Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) is a plus

The Global Trade Specialist will be responsible for overseeing all of South Africa’s import and export operations at our IDEXX distribution hub in South Africa. Acting as the primary point of contact for all import and export activities and processes.

This position is to be based in ZA and is essential and critical to our IDEXX’s success in the South Africa, Sub-Saharan and Indian Ocean region supply chain.

In this role you will :

Oversee Import shipments into ZA and ensure smooth flow of products into ZA :

Review inbound documentation and order set-up

Work on SOPs with Customs Broker

Build KPIs for customs Broker

Collaborate with internal IDEXX (regions, transportation, planning, LOBs, international shipping teams) to be conduit into ZA.

Build audit / monitoring program for ZA imports

Review processes against best practices and any available IDEXX ZA programs

Focus on real-time solutions, process changes, compliance and efficiency

Oversee Export shipments (25+ countries) from ZA and ensure smooth flow of products from ZA :

Generate GTS / SAP Commercial Invoice (CI) for ZA exports. Troubleshoot any GTS CI issues (changes and additions)

Review outbound documentation and order set-up

Work on SOPs and KPIs with export declaration filer for export declarations

Maintain export documentation matrix for region

Collaborate with internal IDEXX (regions, transportation, planning, LOBs, regional import teams, Finance / Accounting, Regulatory Affairs and Product Compliance) to be conduit to ZA.

Build audit / monitoring program for ZA exports

Review processes against best practices and any available IDEXX ZA programs

Focus on real-time solutions, process changes, compliance and efficiency

Awareness of activities that impact ZA imports / exports such as : country of origin, valuation, tariff codes, import / export regulations, GTS, overages / shortages, recordkeeping, permits, incoterms and documentation, quality log.

Awareness on IDEXX’s international shipment structures, drop shipments, products, pricing procedures and item categories.

Strong usage of SAP and GTS to align with shipments and valuations.

Strong knowledge of international trade fundamentals.

Awareness of changes in ZA and region that would impact imports / exports from ZA.

Manage project as assigned, includes UAT testing for upcoming GTS to E4H Hanna migration

Manage documentation for returns processes to and from ZA.

Maintain external relationships forwarders, distributors, ZA customs, various gov’t agencies, brokers and customers for the region.

Responsible for tasks assigned for broader Global Trade work in various non-South Africa, Sub-Saharan and Indian Ocean regions.

Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

EDUCATION :

College graduate or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

EXPERIENCE :

At least 5 years of working experience in a related field, solid understanding of supply chain principles and practices.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

Willing to learn and curiosity about IDEXX business

Strong communication and coordination skills, with the ability to effectively engage with diverse stakeholders across internal teams and external partners.

Proactive and resourceful, with a positive attitude and the ability to take initiative.

Resilient and capable of performing effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

Detail oriented, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Proficiency in SAP, with expertise in resolving issues related to SAP / GTS.

Proficient in computer skills, including MS Office applications.

Fluent in English, with excellent verbal and written communication skills. Additional languages are a plus.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS :

Occasional travel within region might be required.

    The Regulation Manager for Individual and Legal Entities (ILE) is responsible for the end-to-end management of regulatory compliance. This role acts as a regulatory governance architect, synthesizing legislative, judicial, and executive inputs into actionable compliance strategies. The Regulation Manager ensures the organization remains aligned with evolving global regulatory frameworks, judicial precedents, and agency enforcement trends, while maintaining operational excellence and proactively mitigating risks.
    br>For the combined ILE + Export Control (EC) Regulation Manager, the remit expands to include export control compliance. This involves navigating international export control laws, sanctions, trade restrictions, and dual-use regulations, as well as developing robust controls to prevent unauthorized exports and ensure secure cross-border operations.

    About the candidate:

    1. To be a successful Candidate - A background in International Trade Compliance, focusing on the Sanction Party List.
    2. Responsible for the end-to-end management of regulatory compliance
    3. The role will be 70% on Sanctions, 30% on Export Control

    Education & Experience:

    • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in law, International Relations, or a related field.
    • Minimum 5 years of experience interpreting legislative texts and judicial rulings affecting compliance, with proven ability to operationalize court decisions.
    • xperience in regulatory compliance, data investigation, and analysis of international business structures. < r>• P oven working knowledge of international export control regulations (e.g., EAR, ITAR, EU Dual-Use Regulation, UN sanctions). < r>• E perience implementing export control compliance programs and managing regulatory reporting obligations. < r>
    Skills & Competencies:

    • L gislative analysis and ability to parse draft laws and regulatory impact assessments. < r>• J dicial insight, including experience establishing case law databases and tracking precedents. < r>• E ecutive strategy: Align screening processes with agency priorities and enforcement mandates. < r>• S rong analytical, research, and problem-solving abilities; attention to detail. < r>• E cellent written and verbal communication; stakeholder management and cross-cultural collaboration. < r>• A aptability to rapidly changing regulatory environments and a creative, proactive problem-solving approach. < r>• G od understanding of Large Language Models (LLM) and how to use LLM to improve current processes < r>• M st be amenable to work overlapping CEST

    RESPONSIBILITIES: 
    • To support the company with regards to importation and exportation of equipment from various suppliers and to customers. 
    •  Keeping good record of all imports and export orders and the cost thereof, maintaining the digital filing system to ensure business continuity. 
    • Liaise with Customers, Freight Forwarders and Operations departments ensuring all documents are received within the designated time frame and distributed and recorded accordingly. 
    • To communicate with customers, suppliers, forwarders and agents to obtain up to date shipment information and a smooth flow of documentation. 
    • Work with the supplier and procurement department so that the imported goods are suitably packed and shipped via the correct mode of transport in terms of the current incoterms. In some cases the destination can be another country dependent on our current clients needs. 
    • To co-ordinate all exports from SA or other countries, this would involve a good understanding of destination requirements e.g. pre-shipment inspections, certificates of origin, special packaging requirements, dangerous goods etc. 
    • Preparation of documents - Packing lists, Commercial Invoices according to Project BOQ documents according to country requirements. 
    • Consolidation of reports to ensure customers are fully informed of the progress of their shipments. 
    • To provide transport companies with the relevant information to ensure customer delivery requirements are met.
    • To ensure quotations for the relevant shipments have been obtained e.g. Sea, Air etc. and that costs are cleared via the project manager.
    • The ability to adapt with the countries changing environment in terms of permit applications when and as needed, to be able to navigate through import requirements.

    REQUIREMENTS:
    • Matric is essential.
    • Related tertiary qualification would be advantageous.
    • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a logistics environment.
    • Experience with freight forwarders is necessary. 
    • Have a strong customer-service background. 
    • Computer skills – Microsoft Word, Excel.
