Job Purpose

The ICU Qualified Registered Nurse is responsible for delivering specialized, evidence-based nursing care to critically ill patients within the Intensive Care Unit. This role requires advanced clinical knowledge, critical thinking, and the ability to manage life-support equipment while ensuring optimal patient safety and recovery.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care & Monitoring

• Provide comprehensive nursing care to critically ill patients in line with ICU protocols.
• Monitor, assess, and record patients' conditions, responding to changes promptly.
• Administer intravenous therapies, medications, and blood products safely.
• Operate and manage life-support and monitoring equipment (ventilators, infusion pumps, cardiac monitors, etc.).
• Assist physicians during procedures and emergencies.

Patient & Family Support

• Educate and support patients' families, explaining treatment plans and progress.
• Provide emotional support to patients and families during critical care.

Compliance & Safety

• Ensure adherence to infection prevention and control policies.
• Maintain accurate, detailed patient records and handover reports.
• Comply with SANC regulations and hospital protocols.

Collaboration

• Work in collaboration with doctors, anaesthetists, and multidisciplinary ICU teams.
• Participate in ward rounds and contribute to treatment planning.
• Mentor junior nurses and contribute to ICU training initiatives.

Qualifications & Experience

• Diploma/Degree in Nursing.
• Postgraduate qualification in Critical Care Nursing / ICU (essential).
• Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
• Minimum of 2 years' experience in an ICU environment.
• Strong clinical competence in mechanical ventilation, haemodynamic monitoring, and emergency care.
