The OHN Practitioner will provide an effective Occupational, Primary Health Care and Emergency medical service to all SAAT Technical employees and contractors to comply with the provisions of Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 and other inherent legislations.
The OHN Practitioner is primarily responsible for managing and maintaining statutory and regulatory compliance for all occupational health programs and activities across SAAT. Control the allocation and efficient use of resources and monitor that the service is provided within the operational and capital budget allocated for the department. Reporting to the Manager Medical, Health, Safety and Environment this is a highly visible position in the Medical, Health, Safety, and Environmental department and will serve as the subject matter expert.
Principal AccountabilitiesImplement, enhance, and maintain occupational health within the parameters of legal requirements & best practices by Occupational Health.
- Identify Health Risks inherent to work activities in the workplace and the impact on health of employees.
- Conduct pre-employment, periodical, transfer and exit medical examination as per medical surveillance plan as stipulated by OHS Act 85 of 1993 to prevent development of occupational diseases i.e. audiometry test, lung fuction
Prevention of communicable diseases for employees exposed to hygiene and biological hazards.
- Arrange and administer relevant vaccine and prophylaxis treatment.
- Conduct pre-travel health counselling and issue travel bags and kits.
- Conduct facility inspections to ensure adequate housekeeping standards according to Regulatory requirements.
- Perform inspection of food processing and consumption areas to ensure compliance to Food Safety Standards.
Emergency Medical Services
- Provide immediate emergency services to stabilize the condition of SAAT employees and contractors to prevent complications of injuries-on-duty.
- Ensure emergency equipment and consumables are available and up to date.
- Process referral to other medical institutions and complete relevant documentation i.e. COID.
Provision of Primary Health Care Service to identify occupational related conditions and prevent complications of chronic medical conditions to all employees
- Assess, diagnose and prescribe relevant treatment.
- Refer complicated cases to an Occupational Medical Practitioner (OMP), Employee Wellbeing department, Local Primary Health Care Clinics or other Medical Institutions.
- Compiling ill-health and sick absenteeism cases and give recommendations on the possible mitigations to the ill- health committee.
Drug control program to comply with the Medicine Control Act
- Ensure accurate record of drugs and medical supplies for stock balance.
- Ensure safe disposal of pharmaceutical and bio-hazard waste according to prescribed regulatory requirements.
- Updating medicine stock levels ,compile the medicine orders, request for quotations from pharmaceutical companies, quote comparisons and send order to procurement department.
Administration, record keeping and Statistical Reporting
- Compile Primary Health, medical surveillance, injury on duty and laboratory tests information for Management reports.
- Assist the OMP to compile ill-health and sick absenteeism report.
- Update employee files and drug registers.
- Attend SH&E committee and/or management meetings and provide expert guidance with regards to SHE legislations and other requirements to ensure continuous improvement, SHE management systems and alignment between all business partners.
- Monitor and ensure contractors compliance to SAAT's SH&E management system, OHS Act, and NEMA.
Build and sustain positive internal and external stakeholder relationships to accomplish Occupational Health execution plan.
- Participate in cross functional sourcing teams (CFST) for procurement of equipment, PPE, services, etc. to provide SH&E legislative guidance.
- Participate as member of SH&E forums, natural working teams and other groups.
Identify non-conformances (including incidents), conduct medical investigations, root-cause analysis and the identification of personal, workplace and organisational factors for these incidents.
- Identify incident and injury trends and recommend and monitor mitigating and control measures.
- Analyse incident root causes that were determined and corrective and preventive actions implemented as part of the continuous improvement process
Qualifications:
- Matric – Grade 12
- National Diploma/Bachelor's Degree/Bachelor of Technology/Honours Degree in Occupational Health, Diploma in Nursing.
- Occupational Health Certificate and 3 years' occupational health experience Or Occupational Health Diploma and 2 years' occupational health experience.
- Registered with SA Nursing Counsel
Experience:
- 4 years' experience as professional nurse (post training)
- 2 years' experience occupational health nursing in Engineering or Chemical industry
- Good knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Identification of health risks (with reference to legal requirements) which need to be assessed by means of occupational hygiene surveys, determine correct method of assessment and sample population, arrange for survey to be conducted, interpretation of survey reports and recommendation of appropriate corrective action to minimize/eliminate risk exposure.
Knowledge:
- Expert and advisory on root cause analysis on incidents and accidents.
- Have knowledge of SAAT organisation – departmental structures, processes, functions and management systems, and SHE standards.
- Technical experience of enterprise desktop applications e.g. MS Office, 365, Internet Explorer, Chrome.
- Good knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety and its Regulations, Health Act and other relevant legislative requirements that the organisation subscribes to.

The Occupational Health Nursing Practitioner will be responsible for providing an efficient occupational health service for employees, which includes promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative healthcare. Duties & Responsibilities
1. Occupational Health & Clinical Care

The incumbent will provide comprehensive health and wellness services to students within the university environment.
