A key role has opened for a dedicated Occupational Health Practitioner to provide comprehensive health services supporting the wellbeing of staff and stakeholders. This position is ideal for a qualified healthcare professional with expertise in occupational health nursing and proven experience in workplace health and safety compliance.

As the Occupational Health Practitioner, you will be responsible for delivering occupational health services, managing clinic operations, and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and standards. You will work closely with internal teams and external partners to promote a healthy and safe working environment.

Key Responsibilities (amongst Others)

  • Provide comprehensive occupational health services including medical examinations, audiometry, and spirometry.
  • Conduct pre-employment, periodic, and exit medical examinations aligned with occupational health and safety legislation.
  • Assess fitness for duty according to job medical standards and Labour Relations Act requirements.
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to advise and promote occupational health practices.
  • Manage incapacity cases in line with applicable policies and legislation.
  • Conduct health risk assessments to identify exposures and develop medical surveillance programs.
  • Identify and report occupational injuries and diseases in compliance with COIDA.
  • Manage clinic stock, including ordering, dispensing, and record-keeping.
  • Oversee contractors providing occupational health clinic services.
  • Ensure clinic operations comply with current legal requirements and standards; communicate updates to stakeholders.
  • Develop, review, and implement Standard Operating Procedures and policies related to occupational health.
  • Maintain accurate health records and promote a healthy and conducive work environment.
  • Coordinate procurement processes related to clinic operations.

Minimum Requirements

Qualification(s) required:

  • Degree in Nursing with a specialisation in Occupational Health.
  • Registration with the South African Nursing Council (member in good standing).
  • Registration with the South African Society of Occupational Health Nursing (member in good standing).
  • Certificates in Audiometry and Spirometry.
  • Valid Driver’s License (Code 8/10) (Must be able to operate a motor vehicle).
  • Computer literacy.

Experience Required

  • Minimum 5 years post-registration experience as an Occupational Health Care Practitioner.
  • At least 2 years’ experience in team management (advantageous).

Knowledge And Skills

  • Occupational health, safety, and COIDA legislation.
  • Vaccination protocols and medical examinations (baseline, follow-ups, exit).
  • Employee counselling and team performance management.
  • Development of procedures and health risk assessments.
  • Primary health care and medicine dispensing.
  • Strong communication, conflict management, decision making, and report writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Empathy, professionalism, client orientation, and confidentiality.

Key Performance Areas:

  • Promote and adhere to company's procedures, policies and guidelines, including, those relating to SHERQ, Competition Law and Anti-Bribery and Corruption.

Job Purpose

The Senior Forensic Mental Health Practitioner (FMHP) will hold a caseload across two Approved Premises (APs) located in Camden and Tulse Hill. They will provide psychologically informed assessments and interventions, drawing on approaches such as:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
  • Mindfulness
  • Psychoeducation

The goal is to equip service users with practical tools to better manage their mental health.

The Job Holder Will Work Collaboratively With AP Staff, Probation Practitioners, And Wider Partners To Deliver Holistic, Coordinated Support. This Includes:

Practicalities

  • Working Hours: 9am–5pm, Monday to Friday (37.5 hours per week)

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

  • Mental health assessment and intervention skills Ability to conduct psychological assessments and deliver evidence-based interventions (e.g., CBT, ACT, DBT, psychoeducation).
  • Risk management and safeguarding knowledge Understanding of safeguarding protocols and dynamic risk assessment in forensic settings.
  • Communication and collaboration Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with AP staff, probation officers, and external agencies.
  • Record keeping and data management Competence in maintaining accurate records and using data systems for reporting.
  • Training and facilitation Ability to deliver workshops and case consultations to professionals.
  • Experience working in mental health services At least 2–3 years in a mental health or forensic setting, ideally with experience supporting individuals with complex needs or dual diagnoses.
  • Experience in multi-agency environments Prior work in settings involving collaboration with criminal justice, social care, or healthcare professionals.
  • Experience delivering psychological interventions Demonstrated ability to apply therapeutic techniques in practice, even at low intensity.
  • Relevant degree or equivalent Degree in psychology, mental health nursing, social work, or a related field.
  • Professional registration (if applicable) Registration with a relevant body (e.g., HCPC, NMC, BACP) may be required or preferred depending on the employer.
  • Enhanced DBS clearance Mandatory for working with vulnerable individuals in criminal justice settings.

Job Description

Sound knowledge and experience in the provision of Occupational Health and Primary Health care, IOD and medical emergencies

Conducting medical surveillance examinations

Interpret and record medical surveillance findings and refer medical surveillance findings to Occupational Health Medical Practitioner

Document management

Health Risk assessment knowledge

Ensure legal compliance of on-site clinic

Qualifications: Professional Nurse and a Qualification in Occupational Health will be an advantage

Up to date and relevant registration with SANC, SASOHN and DoH

Certificate in dispensing, audiometry and spirometry

Computer literacy (Ms Office, Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint).

Customer orientation, focus on excellence and teamwork

Ethical behaviour

WORK EXPERIENCE

2 years in an Occupational Health environment

Primary Health Care experience

Emergency Care/ Emergency drugs

Injury on duty Management

Professional Nurse with Certificate in Dispensing, Audiometry and Spirometry

Qualifications

Qualification in Occupational Health

Registered with SANC, SASOHN and DoH

Certificate in dispensing, audiometry and spirometry

To ensure healthy workforce to ensure compliance with legislation – Occupational Health and Safety Act.

  • Conduct pre-employment medical examination in accordance to medical examination protocols.
  • Conduct pre-placement and transfer medicals in accordance to medical examination protocols.
  • Provide medical assessment to determine fitness for duty.
  • Conduct periodic health screenings
  • Report and assist on all injuries on duty( IOD ) and occupational diseases to the Compensation Commissioner.
  • Conduct exit medicals

Qualifications

  • Grade 12
  • National Diploma in General Health Nursing and a certificate in Occupational Health Nursing or a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
  • Audiometry and Spirometry Certificate
  • Min 3 years’ experience in Occupational Health Nursing
  • Registration with the South African Nursing Council
  • Dispensing license
  • Driver’s license
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation such as the LRA, EEA, BCEA, Nursing Act, COIDA and OHSA
  • Good communications skills
  • Report writing
  • Presentation skills
