Job Description

Our client, in the agriculture industry, is looking to employ a Civil Engineer to join their team in Klerksdorp, North West Province.

As a Civil Engineer, your purpose is to contribute to the design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure projects within the agriculture industry, ensuring optimal efficiency and functionality.

Duties & Responsibilities :

Analysis, design and procurement

  • Gather all relevant site and problem statement information in order to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the project at hand.
  • Liaise with other disciplines (Mechanical, Electrical, Operations).
  • Analyse and design relevant and cost-effective solutions.
  • Prepare design and procurement information (design drawings, BOQ’s, mark-ups etc.)

Maintenance Management

  • Conduct conditions assessments and structural audits.
  • Manage the inspections done by Civil technical personnel.
  • Manage / oversee the technical assessment of infrastructure conditions.
  • Verify and improve or devise new maintenance specifications.
  • Oversee the procurement and appointment process for maintenance contractors.
  • Devise, acquire approval and implement maintenance policies for civil infrastructure.
  • Devise long-term maintenance plans, acquire client approval and execute in sequential stages.
  • Manage / oversee maintenance expenditure to approved budgets.
  • Oversee the maintenance works executed by civil maintenance teams.

Management of Civil Discipline

  • Manage Civil Discipline as Civil Engineering Discipline Lead.
  • Devise / oversee yearly budgets on all relevant civil infrastructure (Grain, Commercial, Housing and Head Office) based on inspections, requests, long-term plans and all related information.
  • Manage client relations.
  • Devise short and long-term plans on maintenance and capital expenditure on all relevant civil infrastructure.
  • Liaise and engage with other disciplines and grow the maturity of the Engineering and Property Assets (EPA) Unit.
  • Improvement of Unit procedures, processes and systems.

Administration

  • Manage / Oversee the various administrative tasks associated with the Civil Engineering Discipline Lead, such as :

Required qualification and working knowledge :

  • B.Eng Civil Engineering

The Pathways Recent Graduate Program is for recently graduated or graduating individuals who are looking for developmental experiences in the Federal Government intended to promote possible careers in the civil service. As a Civil Engineer your duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Identify applicable codes, standards or policy compliance during a site inspection of structures, to include roads, parking lots, bridges or water control structures (dams, levees, sluice gates, etc.)
  • Perform construction management to include review and approval of construction submittals, shop drawings, contractor invoices and modifications.
  • Conduct investigations of project sites to determine feasibility of proposed projects and adequacy of funding.
  • Prepare plans, drawings and/or specifications for construction projects using software such as AutoCad or Revit.
  • Meet, work with, and negotiate with diverse individuals in federal, state, and private organizations and agencies to accomplish goals and resolve complex resource issues.

Basic Requirement

  • A bachelor's or higher degree in Engineering. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. OR
  • Have a combination of education and experience - college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following: (1) Professional registration or licensure - Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. Absent other means of qualifying under this standard, those applicants who achieved such registration by eligible only for positions that are within or closely related to the specialty field of their registration. For example, an applicant who attains registration through a State Board's eminence provision as a manufacturing engineer typically would be rated eligible only for manufacturing engineering position. (2) Written test - Evidence of having successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or any other written test required for professional registration by an engineering licensure board in the various States, the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico. (3) Specified academic courses - Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and that included the course specified in the basic requirements under paragraph A. The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of an engineering program as described in paragraph A. (4) Related curriculum - Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field, e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a bachelor's degree in engineering, provided the applicant has had at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. Ordinarily there should be either an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence, or several years of prior professional engineering-type experience, e.g., in interdisciplinary positions. (The above examples of related curricula are not all-inclusive.)

Minimum Qualification (GS-07)

  • One year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility equivalent to grade GS-05 in the Federal service. Experience includes assisting with the completion of engineering surveys for civil engineering projects; completing reviews for adequacy and soundness of plans and specifications; assisting with the inspections of contract construction for roads or bridges, or buildings or other civil engineering projects to ensure compliance with plans or specification or other contract terms; assisting with the inspection of the condition of infrastructure assets to determine maintenance and repair needs; and/or assisting with engineering project tasks. OR
  • Have Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.) S.A.A. is based on (1) Class Standing, (2) Grade-Point Average, or (3) Honor Society Membership. (1) Class Standing: Upper one-third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision based on completed courses. (2) Grade-Point Average: A grade point average of (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 (B or better) as recorded on the official transcript or as computed based on four years of education, or computed based on courses completed during the final two years of the curriculum; -or- (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 0 (B+ or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final two years of the curriculum. (3) Election to Membership in a National Scholastic Honor Society: Applicants may be considered eligible based on membership in one of the national scholastic honor societies. Freshman scholastic honor societies cannot be used to meet the requirements of this position. OR
  • Have completed one full year of graduate level education (coursework directly related to Engineering).I have completed a 5-year program of study of at least 160 semester hours leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering. OR
  • Have a combination of graduate level education and specialized experience which together equals 100% of the requirement.

Minimum Qualification (GS-09)

  • One year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility equivalent to grade GS-07 in the Federal service. Experience includes 1) Assisting in the design and development of construction drawings and specifications for civil engineering projects. 2) Assisting with construction inspection oversight 3) Performing assigned engineering project tasks under the supervision of a senior engineer. OR
  • Have 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree in and engineering program of study. OR
  • Completed a 5-year program of study of at least 160 semester hours leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering and 1 year of appropriate professional experience. OR
  • A combination of superior academic achievement and 1 year of appropriate professional experience. OR
  • Have a combination of specialized experience and education (only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level).

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Promotion Potential: This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed represent the full performance level of GS-7/9. At lower grade levels, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-7/9. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds. The selectee may be promoted without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

About the Role

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Civil Design Engineer / Technologist to join our Industry or Mission Critical Facilities Advisory Groups.

You will be part of a dynamic team based in South Africa at one of our main offices in either Johannesburg, Durban or Cape Town.

Job Requirements

Desired Qualifications and Professional Registration

  • BEng/BSc/BTech degree in Civil Engineering (specializing in the civils design of buildings).
  • 5 years’ relevant experience within the consulting engineering environment.
  • Professional / candidate registration with ECSA.
  • Experience working on multi-disciplinary projects is advantageous.
  • Experience in the execution of FMCG industrial projects and data centre building projects is advantageous.
  • Good knowledge of civils standards, guidelines and working methods.
  • Advanced Revit modelling skills advantageous.
  • Advanced Civil3D skills.
  • Experience with the use of 3D calculation software.
  • Parametric Design, Automated Engineering and Augmented Design experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

We will entrust and rely on you to:

  • Buildings Civil engineering and design during all project phases according to client, national and international standards.
  • Assess client/ project civil engineering requirements.
  • Prepare concept design and objectively evaluate, both technically and commercially, different options based upon project objectives/requirements.
  • Perform the necessary engineering for buildings civils (water/fire/sewer/stormwater reticulations, services sleeves, earthworks, roads & parkings, etc) and contribute to the drafting of designs in cooperation with and under the direction of the Lead Engineer(s).
  • Address complex technical questions from clients, in cooperation with the consulting engineer.
  • Perform checks and attend meetings with clients and contractors during the execution phase of projects.
  • Collaborate with colleagues or third parties on (a part of) the civils design.
  • Ensure that from a technical and budgetary point of view (time and money) your processes and activities run according to established principles and as required by quality standards.
  • Check calculations, designs and drawings of colleagues or third parties.
  • Maintain project records in accordance with internal quality system.
  • Mentor junior/graduate engineers/technologists where applicable.

Wilson Contractors are a well- established locally owned and operated company based in Otago and Southland, with branches in Queenstown, Cromwell and Invercargill.

We specialise in civil contracting, delivering a range of services including subdivision construction, bulk earthworks, roading, drainage, infrastructure and site works.

We are looking for a full time, permanent Intermediate to Senior Civil Engineer to be based in our Queenstown branch working around Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A relevant qualification such as a BE, National Diploma in Engineering, NZCE.
  • 3+ years civil engineering experience within New Zealand (but not essential for the right candidate)
  • A history of delivering projects to meet time, quality, and safety; as well as customer expectations.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, motivate and relate to people at all levels.
  • Experience managing engineering projects within a contracting environment.
  • Contract management, budget preparation and financial management skills.

In addition, you should have excellent relationship development and networking skills; be a strong communicator, a self-starter, and be able to work effectively under pressure.

Key duties of the role:

  • Efficient and effective management of contracts and assigned staff
  • Complete civil construction projects in accordance with design specifications
  • Plan construction methods and ensure delivery is both safe and efficient.
  • Carry out operations in such a way so as to minimise our impact on the environment.
  • Day to day running and administration of project is effective.
  • Job records are captured, and invoicing is correct.
  • Ensure work is adequately controlled and supervised to meeting the requirements of the customer, job time and cost budgets.
  • Manage the preparation and implementation of contract quality plans.
  • Oversee or complete testing as required by Quality Plans.
  • Complete programs for contracts and monitor their completion to ensure they are completed in the agreed time frame
