Senior Environmental Health & Safety Officer

Position Summary

The EHS Officer is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing the environmental health and safety programs of projects. This role ensures compliance with all relevant environmental and occupational health and safety legislation, customer, and organisational requirements. The EHS Officer will conduct risk assessments, enforce preventative measures, lead EHS awareness sessions, and investigate workplace incidents.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and implement EHS policies and procedures to ensure a safe and compliant work environment.

Conduct regular inspections and risk assessments to identify potential hazards and implement corrective actions including PPE requirements.

Maintain and update all EHS records, including incident reports, inspection documents, and training logs.

Coordinate internal and external audits and ensure stakeholder and internal opportunities for improvement are implemented timeously.

Serve as the point of contact for all regulatory bodies and ensure compliance with all EHS permits and legislation, and customer and organisational requirements.

Lead emergency response teams and provide guidance during environmental or safety incidents.

Source and deliver EHS training programs to employees and management.

Investigate accidents or incidents to discover causes and coordinate compensation claims and track incidence records and data.

Recommend solutions to issues, improvement opportunities, or new prevention measures.

Report on EHS performance and propose improvements to management.

Stay current with EHS trends, laws, and best practice.

Supervise EHS Officers, contractors and sub-contractors in area of responsibility

Qualifications And Experience

Matric certificate

SAMTRAC or equivalent e.g. SHEMTRAC, NEBOSH, IRCON

Hazard Identification Risk Assessment (HIRA) training

SACPCMP registered and in Good Standing

Safety Management Certificate

Hazard Identification Risk Assessment (HIRA)

Root Cause Analysis Technique (RCAT) or equivalent Incident Investigation training

Auditing training

Legal Liability training

At least five (5) years' experience in construction health & safety

Computer literacy essential, including the use of MS 365, MS Word, and MS Excel

A minimum of 5 years of experience in an EHS role, preferably in a similar industry.

Strong understanding of EHS legislation and best practice.

Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills.

Proficient in EHS management systems and software.

Exceptional communication and training skills.

Ability to lead and motivate cross-functional teams during crisis situations.

• Conduct gap audits, internal audits, hygiene audits, and readiness audits to a professional standard, and submit reports within 5 working days of the audit.
• Prepare for, manage, and facilitate training interventions, ensuring each is conducted professionally and receiving positive delegate feedback.
• Complete learner assessments according to the companys assessment procedures and processes. Ensure all portfolios and batch QMS documentation are completed accurately and submitted within required timeframes.
• Attend weekly planning sessions.
• Coordinate and plan the training and consulting schedule in collaboration with the Marketing and Sales Manager.
• Liaise with clients in advance to confirm scheduled consultations.
• Prepare thoroughly for each client consultation to ensure billable time is used productively and efficiently.
• Accurately account for billable time by providing Client Contact Sheets per visit, per client, cross-referenced with the Project Plan.
• Report any project deviations or concerns promptly to allow for timely resolution with all relevant parties.
• Assist in estimating consultation time required for implementation projects by analyzing client checklists and master document lists.
• Communicate professionally and promptly in response to any client queries or communications.
• Use available free time or admin days proactively to improve auditing and consulting templates or training materials.
• Uphold all company QMS processes, policies, and procedures, and suggest improvements where identified.

To ensure that the Distribution Centre is Health and Safety compliant, the HSE Officer serves to ensure emergency preparedness and incident response at each of our Distribution centres.

Contractor Management

1. Understand the legal principles under which the permit to work process is defined and conduct contractor audits.
2. Understand and apply the legal principles pertaining to the OHS scope of authority and issue permits to work limited to that scope.
3. Draw up and maintain an audit schedule and programme for contractor audits.
4. Maintain an up-to-date database of contractors and service providers who have undergone audits and possess valid permits to work.
5. Carry out contractor and visitor inductions, conduct contractor audits, and issue permits to work for various Supply Chain Business units.
6. Compile statistical analytics, define KPI objectives, and present milestones achieved to management.
