Brief Description
The leadership of this School offers the incumbent an opportunity to build on the School’s vision for Computer Science and Applied Mathematics in South Africa and the continent. This vision should include innovations in teaching and research across a wide range of topics to meet the needs of a changing world. The Head of School will be expected to provide academic vision and leadership, as well as managerial coordination of the various programmes required to maintain and build the School’s position of academic excellence in research, teaching, and community engagement. The Head of School must have academic and/or professional standing to foster the respect and confidence of the members of the School and must possess high-level leadership skills to enact a shared strategic vision for the School. Teaching courses at an appropriate level during the term of office is expected, and the Head must continue with research activities and postgraduate student supervision.
The Head of School must hold an appointment at a minimum level of Associate Professor, or equivalent, at the time of applying. The Head is responsible for the administration of the School. This includes coordinating academic activities in teaching, research and postgraduate training, and human resource activities in recruitment and management, and financial and infrastructure resource management. The successful candidate will be appointed for a fixed term of five years, with the possibility of a second and final term following due process, and will be eligible for a position in the School at the appropriate academic rank, as a member of the academic staff, after the period served as Head. The Head of School reports to the Dean of Science and is a member of the Faculty Executive, chaired by the Dean of Science, and contributes to the overall strategic and operational management of the Faculty of Science. The Head should be visible and active in the affairs of the Faculty and the University.
Qualifications And Requirements: A PhD in an appropriate field that is relevant to the School, and an accomplished research record with postgraduate training and teaching experience, together with administration experience preferably within a university environment.

ROLE SUMMARY:To adopt a leadership role within the College ensuring a holistic view to students and staff. Promoting the general progress and well-being of all students and teachers specifically focusing on guaranteeing a high level of academic and pastoral support in the Middle School. Create a positive learning environment and motivate teachers and students to ensure an education at the highest level. Carry out duties of a subject teacher. Part of the campus management team.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:Internal Academic and Pastoral responsibilities
- Set and reflect on academic targets as well as evaluate the outcomes continuously.
- Monitor, manage and implement work schedules.
- Ensure that communication with parents of students who are underperforming, indicating areas of concern and suggesting remedial action and or further assessment.
- Planning and running of mid-year and year-end examinations.
- Oversee the reporting system.
- Draw up the timetable.
- Assist in planning and running mid-year and year-end award ceremonies.
- Carry out class teaching duties/responsibilities.
- Act as the custodian of discipline in the Middle School.
External Academic Responsibility
- Be available to attend parent meetings and ensure that all relevant details that pertain to the student are available and on file for future reference and counseling sessions.
- Communicate with parents at functions/ meetings/ Information evenings regarding academic matters.
- Responsible for all correspondence with IEB / ISASA / Dept. of Education for all relevant Middle School matters.
- Able to set clear expectations and stretch goals.
- Adaptable teaching style incorporating feedback to parents and students.
- A depth of understanding requirements in the relevant grades.
- Ability to judge learning effectiveness.
- Assessment of student outcomes and feedback to enhance performance.
- Genuine care and attention to the highest standards of student welfare.
- Be involved in the interview process, interviewing prospective new staff members with senior management.
- Take responsibility and assist with the mentorship of all new staff members.
- Be approachable and caring to students, parents and colleagues.
- Work on being an individual with high EQ.
- A minimum of 3-5 years experience in a management role will be advantageous.

The Faculty of Science invites applications for the Headship of the School of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics. In addition to the strong emphasis on teaching and learning, and academic service, the school undertakes high-quality research in a wide variety of areas and aspires for the highest international standards. In the domain of Computer Science, the School’s main research areas include machine learning, data analytics, computer vision, high-performance computing, robotics, natural language processing, reinforcement learning, scientific computing, formal languages and automata, logic, algorithm analysis, and cybersecurity. In the domain of Applied Mathematics, the School’s main research areas include symmetry methods of differential equations, mathematical modelling, mathematical biology (including epidemiology, ecology, medical imaging analysis, computational biosciences, computer-based analysis), control theory, optimisation, numerical analysis, continuum and fluid mechanics, portfolio optimisation, risk management, risk measurement, stochastic processes in finance and interest rate modelling.

The individual should have a demonstrable track-record of academic and strategic leadership as well as hands-on management experience within a university. In addition, the ideal candidate will demonstrate a proven record of effective financial and human resources management and possess excellent communication and inter-personal skills. There should be evidence of the candidate’s ability to maintain and extend the School’s existing international partnerships, and its engagements with the rest of Africa in the interests of enhancing the School’s academic and research profile. Finally, as the Head of School, the candidate in collaboration with the departments and research entities will be required to articulate a clear vision and set the direction of the School within the wider mission of the Faculty and University and to lead and manage the School in meeting its strategic goals. The successful candidate must provide academic and research leadership, by positioning the School appropriately in local, national, regional, and global contexts.
The remuneration will be appropriate to the seniority of the post and will be negotiated on an individual basis.

Such an individual should be in possession of a PhD and is at the rank of either an Associate Professor or Full Professor; have a strong record of teaching and research in any of the literature, language and media disciplines and would be expected to retain a commitment to teaching and research in their discipline alongside the very considerable administrative responsibilities involved in leading the School. The individual should have a demonstrable track-record of academic and strategic leadership as well as hands-on management experience within a university. In addition, the ideal candidate will demonstrate a proven record of effective financial and human resources management and possess excellent communication and inter-personal skills. There should be evidence of the candidate’s ability to maintain and extend the School’s existing international partnerships, and its engagements with the rest of Africa in the interests of enhancing the School’s academic and research profile. Finally, as the Head of School, the candidate in collaboration with the departments and research entities will be required to articulate a clear vision and set the direction of the School within the wider mission of the Faculty and University and to lead and manage the School in meeting its strategic goals. The successful candidate must provide academic and research leadership, by positioning the School appropriately in local, national, regional, and global contexts.
