Job Title : GL Accountant
Type : Full-time, Independent Contractor
Location : Remote
Work hours : 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM Eastern Time (U.S.) (Some flexibility can be provided but strong overlap with U.S. business hours required)
Responsibilities :
- Post customer payments and maintain an up-to-date accounts receivable aging report.
- Record vendor invoices in the client’s accounting system, use accounting judgment to code expenses properly, obtain authorization to pay, and schedule payments in the automated payable system.
- Reconcile bank records to the general ledger accounts and cash accounts.
- Review and adjust both the general ledger and associated subledgers monthly to ensure accurate posting of accruals (capex/expenses), prepaids, revenue, and deferrals (ensuring agreement with external point of sale systems, rent rolls, etc.).
- Prepare and reconcile fixed assets, including preliminary review of capitalization adjustments.
- Perform other accounting tasks as needed by individual clients or the associated controller or GL accounting lead.
- Perform basic variance analysis by analyzing results versus budget and prior periods.
Required Experience :
- Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 2+ years of accounting and/or full-charge bookkeeping experience.
- Working knowledge of accrual basis accounting and payroll requirements.
- Experience with QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop, and other cloud-based accounting automation tools.
- Ability to work independently in a remote setting.
- Critical thinker capable of initiating process improvements and problem-solving.
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365 suite of products.
- Excellent communication and time management skills.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize work.
- Flexibility to manage multiple tasks and shift priorities.
- Enthusiastic, inquisitive, with a desire to learn across various network industries.
Nice to have :
- Experience with practice management tools.
- Familiarity with systems like :
- Appfolio
- Yardi (Breeze or Voyager)
- Maestro / Micros
- Stripe or similar merchant processing system
- Juniper Square and/or Agora
- Rabbet or similar systems such as Procore
- Any prior supervisory experience.

My client, based in the northern suburbs, is looking for a Ledger Controller to be responsible for general accounting activities within their group of companies. The successful candidate will navigate a multicultural and highly innovative environment while partnering with a number of internal customers within finance to ensure that the Accounting function operates at a level that exceeds expectations. This is a contract position, so having no notice period is essential.
Responsibilities:
- General Ledger and Month End Reporting
- Maintain Balance Sheet Reconciliations in line with corporate requirements
- Accounts Receivable and Payable
- Monthly reconciliation of all Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable ledger accounts
- Balance GL to AR and AP sub-system balances and reconcile
- Provision for doubtful debts calculations
- Process all payments via the ERP system from the bank statements and reconcile statements
- Inter-company Accounting
- Inventory
- Fixed Assets and Lease Accounting
- Assist in documentation and monitoring of internal controls (SOX)
Requirements:
- Good understanding of accounting principles (IFRS, US GAAP)
- Bachelors or higher degree in Accounting or Finance
- Professional Accountant (SA), AGA(SA) distinct advantage but not essential
- 3-5 years maximum general accounting experience in commerce or completed SAIPA/SAICA Articles
- Knowledge of US GAAP and SOX reporting an advantage

- Reconcile all CapEX WIP accounts.
- Conduct monthly reconciliations for GL, including Bank, Petty Cash, Insurance, Forex P/L, and Foreign Currency Bank accounts.
- Address General Ledger-related queries, assist with Hash-related queries, and process Hash journals.
- Balance time entries monthly.
- Review all R&M accounts and process necessary month-end journals.

- Maintain and review the journal batch control register to ensure all journals are authorized, supported by documentation, and processed promptly.
- Liaise with Auditors during year-end.
- Matric / Grade 12 with a 3-year Accounting Diploma / B. Comm Degree.
- 3 years’ experience in General Ledger, Fixed Assets, Creditors, and VAT.
- Working knowledge of Accounting Principles & Policies, VAT, and treatment of Fixed Assets.
- Computer literacy in MS Excel, MS Word, and JDE.
- Ability to work under pressure, meet tight reporting deadlines, and demonstrate attention to detail.
