Job Title : GL Accountant
Type : Full-time, Independent Contractor
Location : Remote
Work hours : 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM Eastern Time (U.S.) (Some flexibility can be provided but strong overlap with U.S. business hours required)
Responsibilities :
- Post customer payments and maintain an up-to-date accounts receivable aging report.
- Record vendor invoices in the client’s accounting system, use accounting judgment to code expenses properly, obtain authorization to pay, and schedule payments in the automated payable system.
- Reconcile bank records to the general ledger accounts and cash accounts.
- Review and adjust both the general ledger and associated subledgers monthly to ensure accurate posting of accruals (capex/expenses), prepaids, revenue, and deferrals (ensuring agreement with external point of sale systems, rent rolls, etc.).
- Prepare and reconcile fixed assets, including preliminary review of capitalization adjustments.
- Perform other accounting tasks as needed by individual clients or the associated controller or GL accounting lead.
- Perform basic variance analysis by analyzing results versus budget and prior periods.
Required Experience :
- Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 2+ years of accounting and/or full-charge bookkeeping experience.
- Working knowledge of accrual basis accounting and payroll requirements.
- Experience with QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop, and other cloud-based accounting automation tools.
- Ability to work independently in a remote setting.
- Critical thinker capable of initiating process improvements and problem-solving.
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365 suite of products.
- Excellent communication and time management skills.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize work.
- Flexibility to manage multiple tasks and shift priorities.
- Enthusiastic, inquisitive, with a desire to learn across various network industries.
Nice to have :
- Experience with practice management tools.
- Familiarity with systems like :
- Appfolio
- Yardi (Breeze or Voyager)
- Maestro / Micros
- Stripe or similar merchant processing system
- Juniper Square and/or Agora
- Rabbet or similar systems such as Procore
- Any prior supervisory experience.

My client, based in the northern suburbs, is looking for a Ledger Controller to be responsible for general accounting activities within their group of companies. The successful candidate will navigate a multicultural and highly innovative environment while partnering with a number of internal customers within finance to ensure that the Accounting function operates at a level that exceeds expectations. This is a contract position, so having no notice period is essential.
Responsibilities:
- General Ledger and Month End Reporting
- Maintain Balance Sheet Reconciliations in line with corporate requirements
- Accounts Receivable and Payable
- Monthly reconciliation of all Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable ledger accounts
- Balance GL to AR and AP sub-system balances and reconcile
- Provision for doubtful debts calculations
- Process all payments via the ERP system from the bank statements and reconcile statements
- Inter-company Accounting
- Inventory
- Fixed Assets and Lease Accounting
- Assist in documentation and monitoring of internal controls (SOX)
Requirements:
- Good understanding of accounting principles (IFRS, US GAAP)
- Bachelors or higher degree in Accounting or Finance
- Professional Accountant (SA), AGA(SA) distinct advantage but not essential
- 3-5 years maximum general accounting experience in commerce or completed SAIPA/SAICA Articles
- Knowledge of US GAAP and SOX reporting an advantage

Job Purpose
To implement and manage the general accounting function by ensuring accurate reflection of the financial position, complying with all legal and internal requirements, and providing a sound basis for management interpretation.
- Perform month end transactional activities e.g., review of adjustments, month-end closing procedures, and recon preparation etc.
- Provide first level support in terms of call and query handling across AEL
- Perform selected bank reconciliations
- Review, approve, and post predefined manual journal entries and support documentation and narration to journal (ensure journal entries are valid, accurate, and complete)
- Reconcile balance sheet accounts within an SLA timeline and follow up on long outstanding items with Retain Finance.
- Prepare a monthly memorandum of balance sheet recon issues for review by the in-country team or Retaine Finance.
- Maintain an issue log of business activities, where you have identified key concerns.
- Have a quarterly meeting with the in-country team or Retain Finance, for re-education of key governance processes and also addressing key concern areas.
- Align with COE on GL master data maintenance
- Capture loading of EFT payments i.e., non-vendor related payments
- Release of EFT payments (not for the same country for which you have loaded payments)
- Process of non-vendor related payments in SAP
- Conduct cash book processing and bank reconciliation preparation
- Ensure all long outstanding and reconciling items on bank reconciliation are timeously cleared
- Engage with stakeholders at an operational level to address any service delivery issues
- Comply with all legislation relating to accounting matters
- Identify internal control weaknesses and assist in developing and implementing improvement opportunities
- Review audit instructions and compile / prepare supporting documentation for the audit process
