JOB PURPOSE:
The GIS Specialist will be responsible for a variety of tasks related to geospatial data management, analysis, and visualization. The successful candidate will work closely with project teams and clients to understand their needs and develop solutions using GIS technology.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Data Management:
- Acquire geospatial data from various sources (e.g., government agencies, open data platforms).
- Clean, organize, and maintain geospatial data in a consistent and efficient manner.
- Develop and implement data quality control procedures.
- Document and create metadata for geospatial datasets.
Data Analysis and Visualization:
- Perform spatial analysis using GIS software to answer specific client questions and solve problems.
- Develop thematic maps, charts, and other visualizations that effectively communicate complex information.
- Utilize cartographic principles to create visually appealing and informative maps.
Project Support:
- Collaborate with project teams to understand their GIS needs and develop solutions.
- Assist with the development of project proposals and reports that incorporate geospatial data
- Provide technical support and guidance on GIS-related issues.
Technology and Innovation:
- Stay up-to-date on the latest GIS technologies and trends.
- Research and evaluate new GIS software and tools to improve efficiency and capabilities.
- Explore and implement innovative approaches to using GIS for client projects.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree in Geography, GIS, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience working with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, QGIS).
- Strong understanding of geospatial data concepts and principles.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Knowledge:
- Understanding of relevant industry trends and best practices in GIS.
- Understanding of spatial data concepts and principles.

This position offers the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule to include both office and remote work opportunities and can be based in one of the following South Africa centers: Centurion (Pretoria), Durban or Bellville (Cape Town).
Responsibilities include:
- Support the GIS element of projects in a multi-disciplinary environment.
- Collaboratively working closely with project GIS Leads, data analysis and other stakeholders to support a diverse project team of subject matter experts to view, interrogate, analyse, and present spatial information.
- Spatial and non-spatial data handling, creating, and managing content in enterprise and file geodatabases, using good data management principles.
- Carry out geoprocessing/analysis tasks – using coding skills in ArcPro, Python and/or Arcade to efficiently deliver and customise deliverables.
- Support webGIS (ArcGIS Online) creation and maintenance to aid project team access to spatial information.
- Provide consultancy to internal and external clients to understand their needs and provide solutions.
- Working to programme and budget whilst maintaining the quality of delivery.
- Work within set GIS standards and best practice.
- Ensure quality assurance of all deliverables and follow internal and client-mandated Technical Quality Review processes.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Geographc Information Systems (GIS) or related field is required
- 6+ years of relevant GIS experience
- Proven GIS knowledge and experience of managing GIS projects.
- Highly competent in the use of ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, Esri mobile apps, and ArcGIS Enterprise
- An excellent understanding of spatial data structures and fundamental concepts of GIS.
- Knowledge of managing and maintaining enterprise geodatabases, including implementing corporate and industry.
- Knowledge and understanding of the underlying principles and objectives of digital-twins
- Understanding and experience with the ArcGIS Enterprise platform.
- A well-rounded problem solver who understands client requirements/issues and identifies efficient and innovative ways to deliver results.
- Experience designing custom geospatial solutions using either open-source tools (geopandas, PostGIS, QGIS etc) or proprietary enterprise solutions (ArcPro, ArcGIS API for Python etc).

BACKGROUND:
The Geospatial Analyst and Developer will support effective and efficient project design and planning through development and supporting access to spatial data and tools. The position focuses on developing and managing cartographical maps, data sets and web-based geospatial tools and providing support for integrating these products into project and proposal design and reporting.
Minimum Requirements- A MSc degree in Environmental science, Biodiversity, Conservation, GIS, Geomatics, Engineering, or related field.
- Proven experience (3+ years) in project monitoring and evaluation, data analysis and management, or research.
- Registered member or eligibility to register with the South African Geomatics Council (SAGC).
- Expert proficiency in ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online, and related geospatial software.
- Strong skills in spatial analysis, modelling, and fine-scale digitizing using remote sensing products.
- Experience designing and implementing geoprocessing tasks and geospatial solutions.
- Ability to create visually compelling maps and diagrams to communicate analytical outcomes.
- Knowledge of automation and reporting using R and R-script writing.
- Experience managing and maintaining spatial web applications for data visualization.
- Familiarity with database management systems (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite).
- Ability to standardise mapping templates and enforce data quality control measures.
- Experience coordinating GIS workshops and providing technical training.
- Strong interpersonal skills for engaging diverse stakeholders and external data custodians.
- Proficiency in data analysis and visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau).
- Understanding of South Africa's conservation, environmental, and development policy frameworks.
- Collaborative spirit with the ability to work across teams and manage competing priorities.
- Excellent communication skills in English and one other South African language.
- Valid driver's license for potential travel requirements.
