This unit is responsible for the advancement of risk maturity within the University through a process of risk assessment, risk reporting, and proactive managing emerging risks. The division is further responsible for the management of the audit process, implementing business continuity, fraud risk management, as well as the management of the university insurance.
The role of Risk and Assurance Specialist supports the processes within the Finance - Risk and Assurance Division. The core responsibilities of this role include but are not limited to:
Responsibilities:- Perform risk assessments, facilitation, and updating of operational and fraud risk registers, including regular consultations with Executive Directors and Executive Deans, as well as other risk owners within the wider ELG committee.
- Continuous updating of institutional risk registers, including actively engaging with ELG and MEC members.
- Conducting environmental scanning activities to ensure that any emerging risks are identified.
- Liaising with other higher education institutions to benchmark improvements to processes, procedures, and reporting.
- Reviewing internal audit reports and process reviews to ensure that risks are identified and documented.
- Preparing appropriate reports to be presented to various Management committees, including risk registers, dashboard reports, graphs, summary reports, etc.
- Following up on action items flowing from the various governance committee meetings.
- Playing an active part in educating, guiding, communicating, and training risk owners and risk champions on risk awareness, risk reporting, and control self-assessment.
- Ensuring that Combined Assurance processes are implemented, thereby incorporating Internal Audit reviews and findings into the risk management reports.
- Providing assistance and liaising with relevant stakeholders/consultants in the development and support of software applications and programmes for purposes of improved reporting and capturing of information.
- Maintaining the input and/or data quality of the risk management system.
- Keep abreast of key updates in the risk management domain.
- Providing input and updates to the risk implementation plan.
- Assisting with Policy reviews in the risk and assurance environment.
- Degree in Risk Management or relevant Business/Management degree.
- At least 5 to 10 years’ experience in Risk management or similar.
- Member of Institute of Risk Management South Africa (preferable).
- Experience in automated/integrated risk management tools.
- Strong competency in MS Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Experience of a tertiary educational environment (optional).
- Thorough understanding of risk management processes, fraud risk concepts, as well as risk reporting.
- Ability to adapt technical business knowledge and apply it to various domains, such as finance, academic, and operational.
- A thorough understanding of combined assurance concepts, including internal audit and control self-assessment.
- Exceptional problem-solving skills, and remain calm in times of uncertainty, conflict, and stress.

Description Of The Role And Purpose Of The Job
The Financial Services Audit division provides audit services to the largest banking clients in South Africa. We have created the credit risk group which requires audit managers to work primarily on the corporate and retail credit aspects of banking audits, specifically the determination of expected credit losses (ECL). This requires extensive knowledge and experience with IFRS 9 concepts in relation to banks and to work closely with credit model quants to determine and respond to audit risks as well as provide advisory services to non-audit clients. The credit risk group has been established to invest heavily in the development and training of individuals as well as streamline the credit audit approach globally.
Key Responsibilities
Credit managers are required:
- To guide, project manage and oversee the credit (ECL) audits of banks.
- To understand key technical concepts in relation credit modelling and the application of IFRS 9.
- To develop training material and administer training in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- To work with other global member firms in understanding common credit risk areas and streamlining the audit approach.
- To work closely with the quant credit modelling team in both audits and advisory work to link technical concepts with financial statement and audit requirements.
- Provide technical, audit operational, and audit quality leadership.
- Have a growth mindset to establish the credit risk group and expand service offerings.
- To interact with audit committee members, credit risk officers and other senior management personnel and build credible relationships.
- Deep understanding of credit risk, IFRS 9 and banking concepts
- A general understanding of credit modelling and approaches

As a Risk Management Specialist, you’ll be supporting and be responsible for assisting with the administration of the enterprise risk management system and associated responsibilities for us to stay ahead of the game.
What you’ll be doing
As part of your role, your responsibilities will include:
Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) System Maintenance:
The role oversees and maintains the ERM framework to effectively identify, assess, monitor and report risks across the organization. The Risk Management Specialist ensures that risk management processes are integrated into strategic planning and daily operations. Regular updates to risk management policies and procedures are conducted to reflect changes in the regulatory environment and industry’s best practices.
System Administration and User Support:
They serve as the system administrator for the Risk Management System (RMS), ensuring the live system and training environment are consistently maintained. The Risk Management Specialist provides first-level support to users on the RMS (example, Riskonnect, Onetrust), troubleshooting system issues and managing user access and permissions. The role requires working with the RMS supplier to resolve technical problems, implement system enhancements and manage updates.
To ensure that risks and incidents are reviewed according to the organisation’s Risk Methodology and Framework, the system automation needs to be monitored.
Training and Development:
The Risk Management Specialist is responsible for designing and delivering risk-related training on the RMS to ensure all users are proficient in its use. This includes the development and maintenance of training materials ensuring that users are kept up to date with system enhancements. Providing basic governance and risk advice to all staff and managers, helping them understand the organisation’s risk management policies and practices is a key part of the role, creating a risk-aware culture among employees.
Data Quality:
The Risk Management Specialist role involves regular review and analysis of information held on the RMS to ensure data accuracy and quality and collaborates with business units to improve the quality of risk and control data.
Ensuring alignment with internal frameworks by analysing risk information and control data and ensuring reporting alignment across the different entities. Assisting the audit function in the administration and documentation of self-certifications.
Reporting:
Prepare insight reports for the Board of Directors and Risk committee on a periodic basis, identify and present key risks, facilitate Risk-focused discussions.
Regulatory Alerts and Compliance Support:
Assisting in the distribution and tracking of regulatory alerts to ensure compliance across the organization.
The Risk Management Specialist offers support to the wider compliance team in analysing risk control information to identify potential areas of concern, including managing documentation, electronic filing systems, and team procedures.
Stakeholder Engagement:
The Risk Management Specialist works closely with stakeholders to identify system enhancements and manage change requests. They manage stakeholders and users to meet deadlines and deliver on risk management objectives.
Continuous Improvement:
Continuously seek ways to improve administrative processes for risk management training, compliance tracking, and risk reporting. Support the organisation in developing and refining risk management processes in line with industry best practices.

Essential skills you’ll bring to the table
The necessary skills that we require for this role include:

- An understanding and working knowledge of prevailing governance, risk and assurance standards and public-sector rules

It would be great if you also have some of the following skills:
- In-depth knowledge of sports betting markets, including odds calculation, betting types and market trends
- Previous experience in the online gaming or casino industry, with a strong understanding of player behaviour and industry regulations
- Familiarity with gambling regulations and compliance requirements in various jurisdictions, ensuring adherence to legal standards
- Experience in developing and executing customer retention strategies
