Assistant Farm Manager

Eagles Pride Hatchery, the largest independent supplier of day-old chicks to the commercial market, is looking for Assistant Farm Managers at our operations in the North West Province. Responsibilities will include managing production targets, quality, cost efficiencies, staff, and compliance with bio-security protocols.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and assist with all production-related activities ensuring consistent compliance with SOPs and production targets as set.
  • Effective management of staff.
  • Adhering to Health and Safety requirements and assisting with managing Bio-Security protocols.
  • Optimize utilization of all equipment, buildings, and machinery in use at the Farm.
  • Assist with managing the flow of production data.
  • Ensuring the high standards of animal welfare, hygiene, and animal husbandry practices are maintained at all times.
Desired Experience & Qualification
  • Grade 12 plus a tertiary qualification, e.g., National Diploma in Agriculture will be a definite advantage.
  • Knowledge of animal husbandry.
  • At least 3-5 years of experience in a similar position will be advantageous.
  • Good computer skills - Microsoft Office Applications - Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Good planning and organizing skills.
  • Decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Able to accept high levels of responsibility.
  • Self-motivated, positive individual able to cope well under pressure.
  • Able to work irregular hours, weekend duties, and public holidays.

The following position has become available for an Assistant Farm Manager, based in Muden (KZN). The purpose of this role is assisting the senior manager in day-to-day management of all farming operations on the business unit.

Responsibilities

Operational Task Supervision

  • Assist the Farm Manager in coordinating and supervising daily farm production activities.
  • Plan and monitor tasks to ensure timely and quality completion.
  • Monitor and control operational costs related to tasks and inputs.

Machinery and Equipment Maintenance

  • Conduct routine inspections of all farm equipment and implements prior to use.
  • Identify and carry out basic repairs to avoid equipment failure and reduce downtime.
  • Adopt a preventative maintenance approach to ensure equipment reliability and longevity.
  • Ensure correct and safe use of machinery and prevent misuse or abuse.

Labour Supervision (Fluent in Zulu is essential)

  • Allocate workers to specific tasks in alignment with the farm’s operational plans.
  • Supervise and manage both permanent and fixed-term contract employees for maximum productivity.
  • Monitor and maintain the quality of completed work.
  • Apply basic disciplinary procedures when necessary in accordance with company policy.
  • Foster positive and respectful relationships with all employees, promoting teamwork and motivation.

Requirements

REQUIREMENTS:

Education

  • Minimum: National Diploma in Agriculture
  • Ideal: B.Tech in Agriculture

Training

  • Minimum: Proficiency in MS Word and Excel
  • Ideal: Advanced proficiency in MS Word and Excel

Experience

  • At least 2 years in a similar role such as Farm Supervisor or Junior Farm Manager

Language

  • Fluency in Zulu is essential for effective communication with the labour force.
