We have an exciting position for a Social Governance, Standards & Assurance Advisor to enhance social governance practices and ensure compliance with regulatory standards while improving social performance initiatives in line with industry best practices.

Job Description :

As Social Governance, Standards & Assurance Advisor you will provide services as required and your responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant safety, health, and environmental regulations within social governance practices.
  • Report any unsafe practices or risks associated with social impact initiatives to the direct supervisor or management swiftly.
  • Monitor and maintain effective quality assurance processes tailored to social governance and performance standards.
  • Conduct regular audits of social programs, stakeholder engagement strategies, and community impact assessments to identify areas for enhancement.
  • Evaluate and support team members involved in social performance to ensure adherence to established governance standards and practices.
  • Solicit and analyse feedback from community stakeholders and team members to drive continuous improvement.
  • Monitor compliance with internal policies and external regulatory requirements in South Africa.
  • Track the effectiveness of social performance initiatives by monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs) and identifying trends within stakeholder engagement.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to better understand community needs and develop strategies that align with operational and social objectives.
  • Use data analytics to identify trends, patterns, and opportunities for improving social governance programs.
  • Prepare detailed reports on program effectiveness, compliance metrics, and stakeholder feedback to inform senior management and stakeholders.
  • Utilise data insights to support informed decision-making and guide continuous improvement of social performance initiatives.
  • Apply quality improvement methodologies to optimise social performance processes and minimise inefficiencies.
  • Lead initiatives directed at addressing identified gaps in compliance and enhancing the overall quality of social programs.
  • Stay updated on emerging technologies and methodologies in social governance and performance evaluation.
  • Assess the applicability of new tools and technologies, such as data management systems and stakeholder engagement platforms, on social governance practices.
  • Adapt governance and compliance processes to effectively integrate innovative solutions that enhance the impact of social initiatives.

This role is in the Corporate Affairs (COR) at a Band 6 level reporting to the Manager Corporate Affairs.

Qualifications :

  • Grade 12
  • A diploma in social sciences, public policy, governance, law, or a related field (NQF6)
  • B-degree in social sciences, public policy, governance, law, or a related field (NQF7) is preferred
  • Relevant certifications in social performance, governance, compliance, or quality management (e.g., ISO certifications) may be beneficial.
  • SA Drivers Licence Code B

Experience

  • 3-5 years of experience in social governance, compliance, or related roles, ideally focusing on community engagement and stakeholder management.
  • Understanding local and international regulations related to social governance, corporate social responsibility (CSR), and compliance.
  • Knowledge of methodologies for assessing social impacts of projects, including stakeholder engagement processes.
  • Familiarity with quality assurance processes related to social programs and initiatives.
  • Knowledge of statistical methods and tools for analysing social performance data and impact metrics.

Main purpose of position Currently we are looking for an Environmental and Social Advisor in Cape Town, South Africato be part of our global team working together towards our vision – Improving our future. The Environmental and Social Advisor will help to ensure that Scatec projects deliver on their commitments and obligations in relation to environmental and social aspects. As our E&S Compliance Coordinator, you will lead all E&S work streams for a number of solar and wind projects in different southern African regions, in compliance with IFC Performance Standards, other lender requirements, local law and regulations and Scatec policies.

Main responsibilities

  • Ensure and quality assure the development of project-specific, feasible and IFC Performance Standards compliant ESIAs, ESMPs and ESMS.
  • Scope and manage E&S technical requirements in selection of environmental service contractors as per local environmental requirements and supervise compliance of contractors and subcontractors.
  • Manage workstreams within the overall Project timeline, budget and risk framework, in close coordination of the other functions involved in the development and construction of the Project.
  • Liaise with HSSE teams of SSO and subcontractors’ and support and train on environmental management.
  • Actively participate in regional sustainability network and provide expert opinion on E&S issues across the Company’s global project portfolio.
  • Coordinate Sustainability efforts between projects and ensure annual planning as well relevant monitoring and reporting for internal reports.
  • Participate in team meetings as required.
  • Provide relevant environmental and social information for internal reports.

Qualifications and competencies

  • Relevant tertiary qualification/ University degree within economics, accounting, business or environmental/climate science
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in an environmental and social environment position
  • Preferable knowledge from the renewable energy industry
  • Environmental and Social Governance: Plan and advise local teams on Infrastructure projects
  • Sustainability reporting: Contribute to annual Sustainability report
  • Corporate and Local Sustainability Projects: Propose and manage implementation of UN SDG and local legislation
  • Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS): Contribute, update, and execute the ESMS system platform
  • Equator Principles and IFC Performance Standards: Ensure compliance with ESIA and ESAP to Equator Principles and IFC Perf Standards
  • E&S compliance of contractors and subcontractors: Report to lenders requirements

Main purpose of position Currently we are looking for an Environmental and Social Advisor in Cape Town, South Africato be part of our global team working together towards our vision – Improving our future. The Environmental and Social Advisor will help to ensure that Scatec projects deliver on their commitments and obligations in relation to environmental and social aspects. As our E&S Compliance Coordinator, you will lead all E&S work streams for a number of solar and wind projects in different southern African regions, in compliance with IFC Performance Standards, other lender requirements, local law and regulations and Scatec policies. Main responsibilities Ensure and quality assure the development of project-specific, feasible and IFC Performance Standards compliant ESIAs, ESMPs and ESMS. Scope and manage E&S technical requirements in selection of environmental service contractors as per local environmental requirements and supervise compliance of contractors and subcontractors. Manage workstreams within the overall Project timeline, budget and risk framework, in close coordination of the other functions involved in the development and construction of the Project. Liaise with HSSE teams of SSO and subcontractors’ and support and train on environmental management. Actively participate in regional sustainability network and provide expert opinion on E&S issues across the Company’s global project portfolio. Coordinate Sustainability efforts between projects and ensure annual planning as well relevant monitoring and reporting for internal reports. Participate in team meetings as required. Provide relevant environmental and social information for internal reports. This role can be based in Durban, Cape Town or Midrand.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Unique opportunity to deliver international projects with a primary focus on Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA’S) to meet development finance institution requirements and ESG/ESIA due diligences based on IFC and Equator Principles Standards.
  • Experience with preparing and implementing Environmental and Social Management Systems (ESMS) will be advantageous.
  • Key client/account relationship management, participation in marketing and business development activities, and development of ESIA and ESDD proposals.
  • Contribute to and drive the business strategy for the ESIA and ESDD service sector.
  • Where required, provide a support role to the delivery of ESIAs in line with South African and international lender standards, and permit compliance audits in terms South African legal requirements.
  • Delivering local and international (Africa) ESDD projects.
  • Undertake permit compliance audits in terms of South African legal requirements.

Health and Safety:

  • Role model standards for SHEQ performance and behaviour consistent with the company’s health, safety, environmental and quality vision and policies by influencing those around you.

Qualifications

  • An Honours or higher degree in a relevant environmental and/or social discipline

Key Competencies and Generic Skills:

  • 6 years or more experience as an environmental specialist leading and delivering local and international (Africa) ESDD and ESIA consulting assignments.
  • Professionally Qualified in SACNASP and/or EAPASA.
  • Extensive experience with delivering local and international (Africa) ESDD projects at project level (typically ESIA due diligence) and in support of corporate mergers and acquisitions against Lender standards.
  • In depth knowledge of, and the ability to pragmatically apply the international ESG performance standards (IFC, AfDB, EBRD Performance Standards, ILO Core Conventions, King III / IV, and the World Bank General and sector specific EHS Guidelines etc.)
  • Demonstrable project experience in several of the following sectors: conventional and renewable power generation and transmission, road and rail infrastructure, ports and marine infrastructure, mining, oil and gas, and industrial manufacturing facilities.
  • Knowledgeable in a wide range of environmental and social sub-disciplines (i.e. air quality, ecological impact, occupational health and safety, resettlement planning, labour practices etc.)
  • Strong experience in Sub Sahara Africa (outside of South Africa) and ability to travel.
  • Strong technical report writing skills, producing professional reports in fluent English.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Comfortable to engage in client-facing business development.

Strong preference will be given to:

  • Candidates who are able to read, write and converse in French or Portuguese.
  • Candidates with knowledge of Impact Investing, Sustainability reporting and Governance.
