CyanoLakes is seeking a motivated Environmental Scientist to support our growing client base and help deliver cutting-edge water quality insights to customers. Ideal candidates will have a background in marine ecology, oceanography, environmental sciences, atmospheric sciences, or biological sciences, and be confident with statistics and data analysis.
Key Responsibilities:
· Engage with customers to understand their data and reporting needs
· Analyse environmental satellite and water quality data
· Manage client accounts and support users with technical queries
· Collaborate with the team to improve the product and user experience
· Contribute to scientific reporting, validation, and training materials
Essential Requirements:
· A degree in a relevant scientific field (Honours or postgrad desirable)
· Strong analytical skills and familiarity with statistics
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
· Ability to work independently and remotely
· Passion for environmental monitoring and science communication
This is a remote position with flexible hours, ideal for a scientist eager to apply their skills in a real-world, impactful context.

Job Description

Role Overview
In this role, you will champion sustainability throughout the project lifecycle—developing environmental and sustainability outputs, coordinating interdisciplinary teams, and guiding junior professionals. You'll be instrumental in embedding sustainable design, climate resilience, and circular economy principles into infrastructure development.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and integrate sustainable infrastructure strategies into project planning and execution.
- Develop and coordinate environmental and sustainability studies, including climate risk and resource efficiency.
- Prepare high-quality EIA/ESIA reports with sustainability-focused inputs and performance indicators.
- Apply legislative and sustainability frameworks to identify project triggers and compliance pathways.
- Participate in interdisciplinary reporting and resolve discrepancies in sustainability and environmental data.
- Coordinate with authorities for environmental and sustainability approvals.
- Support client meetings and contribute to sustainability-focused technical proposals.
Sustainability & Technical Excellence
- Analyse environmental and sustainability data using advanced tools and methodologies.
- Ensure reporting quality aligns with client, authority, and global sustainability standards (e.g., SDGs, IFC Performance Standards, Envision).
- Work within budget and schedule with moderate supervision.
- Maintain and develop technical skills in sustainable infrastructure, climate adaptation, and ESG integration.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Engineering, or related field.
- Minimum of 5 years relevant experience in sustainability, environmental assessments, and infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities:
Environmental Compliance and Management:
- Prepare, review, and submit comprehensive environmental compliance reports for mining projects.
- Ensure all operations meet environmental regulations and standards.
- Monitor environmental impacts and implement necessary mitigation measure
Site Assessments and Technical Excellence:
- Conduct detailed environmental assessments and audits at various mining sites.
- Lead the development and execution of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) and Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA).
- Supervise and guide junior engineers and environmental scientists, ensuring quality and accuracy in all environmental works and studies.
- Coordinate project teams, manage deliverables, and ensure technical and procedural excellence in environmental studies and assessments.

Regulatory Liaison and Public Participation:

Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science, Arts, or Engineering from an accredited university.
- Master's degree in a related field is preferred but not required; extensive experience is valued.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in environmental management, with a focus on the mining industry.
- Registration as a Professional Scientist with SACNASP and Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP) with EAPASA in South Africa.
- Strong knowledge of environmental laws, regulations, and assessment procedures.
- Proven leadership skills, with experience managing project teams and guiding junior staff.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
- Willingness to travel to various project sites as required.
