Main Purpose: The Regional Environmental Management Lead is responsible for overseeing and implementing environmental strategies within the Africa region, ensuring alignment with global environmental and sustainability objectives and regulatory standards. This role involves developing and monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs), data collection, conducting trend analyses, and reporting on environmental performance. The Environmental Lead collaborates with cross-functional teams to promote compliance, drive continuous improvement, and foster a culture of environmental awareness. Additionally, the role includes designing region-specific initiatives and processes to mitigate environmental impacts and safeguard workplace safety. Knowledge Skills and Abilities, Key Responsibilities:

Role and Responsibilities:

1. Lead Puma Energy's environmental initiatives in the Africa region, driving the implementation of regional strategies to ensure alignment with global objectives

2. Embed Puma Energy’s Environmental Standards across the organization, ensuring compliance.

3. Support the collection, organization and verification of sustainability data within the region to help the organization meet internal and external Sustainability Reporting requirements.

4. Drive performance and growth by defining and implementing regional environmental KPIs in alignment with global requirements, conducting trend analyses, and contributing to internal reporting needs.

5. Provide technical or administrative support for Global Environmental and Sustainability programs or issues.

6. Develop regional Environmental and Sustainability project goals, objectives, initiatives, or strategies in collaboration with other Puma Energy Environmental and Sustainability professionals, considering factors such as cost-effectiveness, technical feasibility, and acceptance.

7. Identify needed resources to implement Environmental and Sustainability programs or manage issues.

8. Design and implement region-specific environmental workplace processes and procedures that help protect workers from potentially hazardous work conditions, and prevent impacts on the environment.

9. Support the Africa region in conducting and reviewing due diligence on brownfield and greenfield projects, acquisitions and mergers, and divestments to ensure full environmental compliance.

10. Responsible for maintaining HSSE networks to effectively deliver and share learnings and best practices internally and externally across the Africa Region in a structured, standard, and auditable manner.

11. Develop and implement training programs to enhance environmental awareness and compliance among employees at all levels of the Africa business.

12. Research or review regulatory, technical, or market issues related to Environment and Sustainability.

13. Ensure Country HSSE Mgrs./ Business Partners and Country Operational Managers are made aware of changes or updates to Environmental Regulations, Codes of Practice, or Puma Energy requirements relevant to their jurisdiction and operations.

14. Assist in evaluating workplace environments, equipment, and practices for the purpose of driving compliance and risk reduction.

15. Review Environmental incidents and non-conformances, identify trends and support in the development and communication of proactive initiatives.

16. Verify that the in-country Operations have identified and documented its environmental aspects and impacts (i.e. Environment Impact Register).

17. Verify that the in-country Operations have developed Environmental Management Plans and Programs to address signficant risks.

18. Conduct peroidic review of the action management system and support in-country teams to meet timeines for close-out of actions.

19. Lead or manage others undertaking ISO 14001 audits across in-country Operations.

Job Description

With our project pipeline continuing to expand, we are seeking an intermediate environmental scientist experienced in environmental chemistry, contaminated land and remediation. Your role as environmental scientist will include working closely with our US teams on large, contaminated land and remediation programmes, while based in South Africa to:

  • Analyse geochemical data to determine the extent and type of contamination.
  • Prepare detailed reports on site conditions, contamination levels, and remediation efforts.
  • Prepare and review technical reports, and other project documentation, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and consistency.
  • Perform specific and limited portions of a broader assignment as an experienced Environmental Scientist.

  • Initiate and complete environmental and social legislative processes to obtain relevant authorizations (Environmental Impact Assessments, Water Use Licensing, Waste Management Licenses, etc.)
  • Compile and write the required reports and other supporting documents for submission to our clients and relevant authorities
  • Conducting environmental compliance auditing
  • Financial Provision Assessments/ Closure Cost Estimates (GN R 1147 and other relevant legislation)
  • Environmental risk identification and management
  • Development of Mine Closure and rehabilitation plan(s)
  • Site Assessments
  • Reporting progress on deliverables in accordance with project schedules; and

Requirements:

Job Description

Job Title: Environmental Scientist

Location: Durban

Responsibilities:

  • Project management of environmental assessment and monitoring projects
  • Develop proposal documents and budgets
  • Prepare all reports that are applicable to Applications for Environmental Authorisations and
  • Water Use Licence Applications
  • Perform evaluations of environmental impacts and apply for water usage licenses.
  • Conducting risk assessments and providing recommendations for mitigation strategies
  • Producing detailed reports on findings and recommendations
  • Liaising with clients and stakeholders to ensure project goals are met

Requirements:
  • BSc Honours in Environmental Management or related field
  • Master's degree in Environmental Management in advantageous
  • Registration with the Environmental Assessment Practitioners Association of South Africa (EAPASA) is mandatory
  • Registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) is mandatory
  • At least 3 to 5 years of consulting experience
  • Excellent communication and client liaison abilities
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations and legislation
  • Experience with mining projects will be advantageous

Job Description

Are you passionate about environmental management and looking to make a significant impact? We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Senior Environmental Scientist to join our dynamic team to support both our local and global business.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Project Involvement : Lead and deliver discipline-specific input in various projects, ensuring effective collaboration and delivery.
  • Environmental Assignments : Conduct detailed environmental studies, assessments, and prepare drawings and reports.
  • EIA/ESIA Development : Oversee the development of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) and Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs), including data review and compilation of baseline documentation.
  • Team Guidance : Mentor junior environmental planners and environmental scientists, ensuring high-quality work and professional growth.
  • Stakeholder Engagement : Lead public participation and stakeholder engagement processes, serving as the main interface with clients and competent authorities.
  • Technical Excellence : Coordinate small to mid-size project teams, prepare project deliverables, and provide specialized technical input. Ensure high-quality, cost-effective work by following or developing environmental assessment procedures.
  • Client Relationship Management : Build and maintain client relationships, attend client meetings, and participate in the development of bids and proposals.

Technical Skills:
  • Project Coordination : Manage and coordinate project teams, ensuring timely and budget-compliant delivery.
  • Environmental Assessments : Conduct interdisciplinary reviews, apply legislative knowledge to manage environmental risks and obtain necessary approvals.
  • Problem Solving : Use innovative approaches to solve problems and improve existing processes.
  • Quality Assurance : Perform technical quality reviews of assessments, models, and surveys, adhering to corporate standards and safety regulations.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Experience : 8+ years of relevant experience in environmental science or engineering.
  • Education : Bachelor’s degree in Science, Arts, or Engineering from an accredited university. A Master’s degree is preferred but not required.
  • Professional Registration : Registered as a Scientist with SACNASP and as an Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP) with EAPASA in South Africa.
