ProSidian Seeks a Senior Environmental Consulting Specialist (Mining Industry) (541690 Contract Contingent) located in Cape Town South Africa to support an engagement for U.S. Govt. International Technical Assistance Program (ITAP) providing assistance on technical, regulatory, environmental, and financial management for national development on a range of energy and non-energy resources. Key Areas of Focus: 1) policy, legal, and regulatory reform; 2) technical, operational, and economic analysis; 3) financial mechanisms and market creation; 4) economic mgmt. , transparency and fiscal policy; 5) environmental impacts and social and community issues related to resource development. ProSidian provides technical assistance and training related to four Capacity Challenges: 1) TECHNICAL understanding of resources and new extractive technologies / techniques 2) FINANCIAL mgmt. of revenues from the sector 3) LEGAL best practices for international laws and regulations 4) ENVIRONMENTAL protectins for people and environment from sector impacts. Candidates shall work to support requirements as a Senior Environmental Consulting Specialist (Mining Industry) and Provide industry technical expertise, experience, training, and support with Energy, Extractives, and Renewable Energy concerns related to Environmental concerns covering the direct and indirect environmental impacts of energy acquisition, transport, production and use related to and resulting from the Mining Industry. This position requires comprehensive knowledge within various functional areas that meet objectives and ensure compliance with environmental processes, standards, and policies. This position may train and mentor Energy, Extractives, and Renewable Energy stakeholders and provides technical solutions to a wide range of difficult and complex problems and support the implementation of overall Environmental Policy, Compliance, and Strategy constructs with tailored solutions that are imaginative, thorough, practical and consistent with the objectives for international, federal, state, and local environmental regulations for the industry.
Work to effectively engage stakeholder/agency professionals and accurately communicate Environmental policy advice, assistance, training, and support goals and objectives. Provide consulting and support to help client stakeholders ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations and provide Environmental policy advice, assistance, training, and support on a full range of matters related to the Mining Industry. Assist in the interpretation of applicable environmental regulations and assists in the development, review, and implementation of guidelines, procedures, and processes to ensure successful completion of projects in compliance with applicable environmental laws and regulations.
- Assigned job duties may support stakeholder Environmental Science functional areas such as sampling, data capture, data analysis/decision support, documentation, report preparation, or related areas
- Assist in the implementation of policies and procedures to ensure awareness of and compliance with requirements of the project
- Conducts scientific studies and investigations in accordance with established procedures and apply precedent and standards in analyzing and interpreting data to provide technical guidance to stakeholder field personnel
- Develop and oversee the use of appropriate procedures and guidelines, review documents for accuracy, and may act as a team lead or technical advisor on small projects
- Develops solutions to problems encountered and coordinates various technical aspects of work to ensure compliance with all contractual, statutory and regulatory requirements and procedures
- Prepares, coordinates, or supervises the preparation/completion of technical environmental resource reports, resource agency consultations, environmental permit applications, and acquisition of applicable environmental clearances and approvals.
- Provide Environmental policy advice, assistance, training, and support for compliance programs through inspections of permitted projects, management of stakeholder Environmental Inspection staff, and/or submittal of requisite compliance reports.
- Provide Environmental policy advice, assistance, training, and support for project planning activities to assess and relay applicable environmental permit/approval requirements, and maintain project budgets and schedules.
- Provide Environmental policy advice, assistance, training, and support to assists in the development of, and facilitate presentations and training on, various environmental related topics to the Mining Industry. May train and mentor less experienced professionals.
- Provide technical and/or functional support to stakeholder Environmental Science Teams and prepare, interpret, and/or review correspondence, calculations, proposals, plans, specifications, investigations/studies, surveys, reports, structures, and/or systems
- Reviews and manages contractor work to ensure services are performed according to applicable environmental specifications, standards, and regulatory requirements.
Qualifications
Leadership, Communication, Government financial management, budgeting, financial modeling, reporting, presentations and at least (10) years Management in fields related to Oil, Gas, Extractives with specialty in management and operations, law, geology, policy, valuations, Corporate Finance, M&A, Energy Investments, environmental policy compliance, Energy Development, Energy Infrastructure, Commodities Management, or Natural Resource markets.

The Senior Environmental Consulting Specialist (Mining Industry) shall have Minimum of Ten (10) years of consecutive employment in a position with comparable responsibilities within the past five (5) years, Must be able to use a computer to communicate via email; and Proficient in Microsoft Office Products (Word/Excel/Power point) and related tools and technology required for the position.
- Bachelor degree in Environmental Science, Geosciences, Natural Resources or related discipline. Master’s degree or Ph.D. is desirable, but not required. A Ph.D. may be substituted for 4 years of experience with a Master’s Degree or 6 years’ experience with a Bachelor’s Degree
- A training history of appropriate specialized courses and seminars is expected. Technical publications are valued but the in-depth practical experience is paramount.
- Ability to demonstrate a consistent commitment to compliance with applicable laws and regulations for the Mining Industry.
- Ability to demonstrate respect for all individuals, adhere to the ’s values and business practices, and do both consistently.
- Ability to handle sensitive and/or confidential information, work effectively under pressure, and exercise independent judgment and discretion in dealing with a variety of individuals and situations.
- Ability to travel up to approximately 25% of the time, including overnight stays, to work or field locations, and to attend meetings, training and conferences/seminars.

- Demonstrated experience in the development of environmental permit applications and documents relevant to the development of Mining Industry
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to competently represent a variety of settings and various media, including telephone, e-mail and written correspondence.
- Experience performing environmental permitting and compliance activities within the Mining Industry preferred.
- Familiarity or experience working with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software, such as ArcMap preferred.
- Maintain knowledge of and demonstrates the ability to perform work safely in accordance with all approved safety policies, procedures and applicable regulations and performs assigned duties in a safe manner
- Must have exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, strong problem solving and multi-tasking abilities and show attention to detail.
- Strong proficiency in the use of personal computers and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) software. Ability to quickly learn other software.

- Must have worked on projects within South Africa
- Must be a strong team player.
- English speaking with excellent communication skills, additional languages will be advantageous.

WSP has a new opportunity for a **Principal Consultant - Environmental and Social Due Diligence (ESDD)** to join our **Environmental Planning and Advisory** team, the role is based in **Gauteng, Cape Town or Durban.** This role is pivotal in delivering high-quality environmental and social due diligence services to our clients, ensuring compliance with international standards and contributing to sustainable development.

**Duties and Responsibilities:**
+ Deliver international projects with a primary focus on Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs) to meet international finance institution requirements (e.g. IFC, World Bank) and Equator Principle Standards and delivering local and international (Africa) Environmental and Social Due Diligence (ESDD) projects based on IFC and Equator Principles Standards to also meet local and international Lender standards.
+ Key client/account relationship management, participation in marketing and business development activities, and development of ESIA and ESDD proposals.
+ Contribute to and drive the business strategy for the ESIA and ESDD service sector.
+ Where required, provide a support role to the delivery of ESIAs in line with South African and international lender standards, and permit compliance audits in terms South African legal requirements.

**Qualifications**
+ An Honours or higher degree in a relevant environmental and/or social discipline
**Key Competencies and Generic Skills:**
+ 6 years or more experience as an environmental specialist leading and delivering local and international (Africa) ESIA, ESDD and construction/operation E&S monitoring assignments.
+ Professionally Qualified in SACNASP and/or EAPASA.
+ Extensive experience with delivering local and international (Africa) ESDD projects.
+ In depth knowledge of, and the ability to pragmatically apply the international ESG performance standards (IFC, AfDB, EIB Standards, ILO Core Conventions, and the World Bank General and sector specific EHS Guidelines etc.)
+ Demonstrable project experience in several of the following sectors: conventional and renewable power generation and transmission, road and rail infrastructure, water treatment, supply and distribution, ports and marine infrastructure, mining, oil and gas, and industrial manufacturing facilities.
+ General knowledge of a wide range of environmental and social sub-disciplines (i.e. air quality, ecological impact, occupational health and safety, social & resettlement planning, labour practices etc.)
+ Strong experience in Sub Saharan Africa (outside of South Africa) and ability to travel.
+ Strong technical report writing skills, producing professional reports in fluent English.
+ Strong project management skills.
+ Comfortable to engage in client-facing business development.
**Additional Requirements:**
Strong preference will be given to:
+ Candidates with experience with international ESDDs and, ESIAs
+ Candidates with financial sector client exposure.
+ Candidates with experience in mining, renewable energy and/or infrastructure projects.
**The following will also be advantageous:**
+ Candidates who are able to read, write and converse in French or Portuguese.
+ Candidates who have a relevant financial qualification
+ Experience with EHS compliance auditing
+ Knowledge of Impact Investing, Sustainability reporting and Governance.
+ Experience with preparing and implementing Environmental and Social Management Systems (ESMS)
