Role and Responsibilities:
1. Lead Puma Energy's environmental initiatives in the Africa region, driving the implementation of regional strategies to ensure alignment with global objectives
2. Embed Puma Energy’s Environmental Standards across the organization, ensuring compliance.
3. Support the collection, organization and verification of sustainability data within the region to help the organization meet internal and external Sustainability Reporting requirements.
4. Drive performance and growth by defining and implementing regional environmental KPIs in alignment with global requirements, conducting trend analyses, and contributing to internal reporting needs.
5. Provide technical or administrative support for Global Environmental and Sustainability programs or issues.
6. Develop regional Environmental and Sustainability project goals, objectives, initiatives, or strategies in collaboration with other Puma Energy Environmental and Sustainability professionals, considering factors such as cost-effectiveness, technical feasibility, and acceptance.
7. Identify needed resources to implement Environmental and Sustainability programs or manage issues.
8. Design and implement region-specific environmental workplace processes and procedures that help protect workers from potentially hazardous work conditions, and prevent impacts on the environment.
9. Support the Africa region in conducting and reviewing due diligence on brownfield and greenfield projects, acquisitions and mergers, and divestments to ensure full environmental compliance.
10. Responsible for maintaining HSSE networks to effectively deliver and share learnings and best practices internally and externally across the Africa Region in a structured, standard, and auditable manner.
11. Develop and implement training programs to enhance environmental awareness and compliance among employees at all levels of the Africa business.
12. Research or review regulatory, technical, or market issues related to Environment and Sustainability.
13. Ensure Country HSSE Mgrs./ Business Partners and Country Operational Managers are made aware of changes or updates to Environmental Regulations, Codes of Practice, or Puma Energy requirements relevant to their jurisdiction and operations.
14. Assist in evaluating workplace environments, equipment, and practices for the purpose of driving compliance and risk reduction.
15. Review Environmental incidents and non-conformances, identify trends and support in the development and communication of proactive initiatives.
16. Verify that the in-country Operations have identified and documented its environmental aspects and impacts (i.e. Environment Impact Register).
17. Verify that the in-country Operations have developed Environmental Management Plans and Programs to address signficant risks.
18. Conduct peroidic review of the action management system and support in-country teams to meet timeines for close-out of actions.
19. Lead or manage others undertaking ISO 14001 audits across in-country Operations.

Main purpose of position Currently we are looking for an Environmental and Social Advisor in Cape Town, South Africato be part of our global team working together towards our vision – Improving our future. The Environmental and Social Advisor will help to ensure that Scatec projects deliver on their commitments and obligations in relation to environmental and social aspects. As our E&S Compliance Coordinator, you will lead all E&S work streams for a number of solar and wind projects in different southern African regions, in compliance with IFC Performance Standards, other lender requirements, local law and regulations and Scatec policies.
Main responsibilities
- Ensure and quality assure the development of project-specific, feasible and IFC Performance Standards compliant ESIAs, ESMPs and ESMS.
- Scope and manage E&S technical requirements in selection of environmental service contractors as per local environmental requirements and supervise compliance of contractors and subcontractors.
- Manage workstreams within the overall Project timeline, budget and risk framework, in close coordination of the other functions involved in the development and construction of the Project.
- Liaise with HSSE teams of SSO and subcontractors’ and support and train on environmental management.
- Actively participate in regional sustainability network and provide expert opinion on E&S issues across the Company’s global project portfolio.
- Coordinate Sustainability efforts between projects and ensure annual planning as well relevant monitoring and reporting for internal reports.
- Participate in team meetings as required.
- Provide relevant environmental and social information for internal reports.
Qualifications and competencies
- Relevant tertiary qualification/ University degree within economics, accounting, business or environmental/climate science
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in an environmental and social environment position
- Preferable knowledge from the renewable energy industry
- Environmental and Social Governance: Plan and advise local teams on Infrastructure projects
- Sustainability reporting: Contribute to annual Sustainability report
- Corporate and Local Sustainability Projects: Propose and manage implementation of UN SDG and local legislation
- Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS): Contribute, update, and execute the ESMS system platform
- Equator Principles and IFC Performance Standards: Ensure compliance with ESIA and ESAP to Equator Principles and IFC Perf Standards
- E&S compliance of contractors and subcontractors: Report to lenders requirements
- ESG reporting requirements: Advise and ensure compliance with requirements and regulations
- Supervise and when required manage the processes of obtaining required environmental licenses and permits as per South African legislation
- Understanding of South African Environmental Legislation: National Environmental Management Act (NEMA), National Environmental Management: Biodiversity (Act 10 of 2004); Conservation of Agricultural Resources Act – CARA (Act 43 of 1983), National Water Act, No 36 of 1998

Functional Responsibilities:
Under the general guidance and supervision of the Senior Project Manager and in coordination with the RISU Project Coordinator, the critical functions of the Technical Advisor include the following:
Technical inputs to the SEA-MaP project on marine plastic pollution and relevant subject matters
- Provide updated information on marine plastic pollution, including sources, distribution, impacts, and mitigation strategies.
- Assess the ecological, social, and economic risks of marine plastic pollution, including impacts on wildlife, habitats, fisheries, and human health.
- Analyze scientific literature, policy documents, and industry reports to stay informed about emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in the field.
- Advise on conceptualizing the activities, bringing in relevant knowledge, examples, and best practices.
- Share information on relevant national plans and frameworks in ASEAN countries and international policies, regulations, and agreements related to plastic pollution and marine conservation for advocating effective governance and policy measures.
- Support in analyzing waste management practices, recycling technologies, and circular economy principles to minimize plastic waste generation and promote sustainable consumption and production patterns.
- Provide expert advice and guidance to SEA-MaP consultants on the design and implementation of deliverables.
- Support collaboration with government agencies, development entities, academia, and industry partners to identify priority areas for intervention and recommend evidence-based solutions.
- Offer technical expertise and support to partners and stakeholders in the project seeking to address marine plastic pollution through capacity-building initiatives, training programs, and educational workshops.
- Support the quality assurance of training materials, manuals, and guidelines on plastic waste management and pollution prevention for diverse audiences.
- Support in reviewing the project’s progress by analyzing data on performance indicators.
- Provide technical support in developing communication materials, including reports, presentations, and social media content, to communicate research findings, policy recommendations, and success stories to diverse audiences.
- Support in arranging high-level discussions with government, academia, development entities, activists, bilateral agencies, private sector, and development banks, etc.
- Prepare the scope of work of the various activities and detailed Terms of Reference for the technical deliverables of the project.
- Provide guidance on innovation in packaging/labeling/plastic alternatives, solutions for substituting single-use plastic, etc.
- Develop networks of promising innovators, and arrange grooming and capacity enhancement to prepare them for highly effective international innovation models.
- Support in planning and implementing community engagement in reducing plastic waste, etc.
- Identify technical criteria and proposal evaluation guidelines, and provide technical support in evaluating the proposals and selecting suitable candidates to implement project activities.
Result Orientation and Quality Assurance:
- Assure the high-level technical quality of the activities developed by the SEA-MaP Regional Project and their products.
- Provide strategic inputs in the discussions among the RISU (UNOPS), the PMU, the ASEC, and the World Bank.
- Validate from the technical point of view the knowledge products of the project (documents, background papers, analyses, publications, etc.).
- Provide high-quality technical advisory inputs and advice to UNOPS on any marine plastics technical issues and queries as requested from stakeholders to ensure strong buy-in on proposed methodologies related to the project implementation.
- Provide high-level technical input and presentations on assigned topics/activities and the RISU at meetings, conferences, consultations, etc.

Monitoring process, research, data, and analysis:
- Support in policy-relevant indicators and indicator systems.
- Provide information on environmental data and statistics.
- Technical support to consultants on data analysis, estimation, calculation, and monitoring tools/methods for Plastic waste management, etc.
Other tasks:
- Provide backstopping technical support to the RISU as requested by the Senior Program Manager/RISU project coordinator on any marine plastics technical issue as required.
- Any other similar tasks related to providing high-level technical advice to RISU as required by the project team on ASEAN's behalf.
The time frame for the assignment is 1 July 2024 – 30 September 2026.
Education/Experience/Language requirements:
Education:
- Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent), preferably in relevant disciplines such as Environmental Science/Environmental Engineering/Environmental Management/Marine Ecology/Sustainability Studies/Fisheries/Aquaculture/Sustainable Landscape Management/Policy and Environmental law/Sustainable Financing/Development Investment/Innovation, or similar is required.

- A minimum of seven (7) years of experience in programme/project development, research, implementation, and/or management of environmental projects or related fields in combination with the relevant advanced university degree is required.
- Experience in marine plastics-related projects/programs is required, which should preferably include working on relevant regulations and policies related to waste management; recycling, and plastic pollution prevention; Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) frameworks for reducing plastic pollution; implementation of single-use plastic ban frameworks. Good understanding of plastic life cycle assessment (LCA) methodologies; waste characterization techniques; and waste management infrastructure.
- Experience in producing high-quality documents (technical ToR, guidance notes, editing policy documents, manuals, etc.) is required.
- Experience in working with normative bodies, regional entities, government, non-government actors, the private sector, academia, and the community is desirable.
- Relevant professional experience outside the country of origin is preferred.
