The Opportunity
Our South Africa team is seeking a strategic, experienced OE & PMC Lead to join our dynamic team working on innovative and exciting energy infrastructure projects in Africa. This is a rare opportunity to build and lead a team in a high-priority growth area for Arup, with strong backing from global and regional leadership.
This position is based in Johannesburg or Cape Town.
You will have deep experience in one or more technical areas – such as leading multi-disciplinary teams in winning and delivery of energy projects – and a proven track record of cultivating long-term client relationships, securing impactful work, positioning an energy business for strategic growth and delivering projects successfully. Build and maintain client relationships with IPPs, Mining Companies, public agencies, and contractors.

Is this role right for you?
We are looking for people with the following skills
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in engineering. Professionally registered with ECSA (Pr.Eng).
- Project management qualification or registration preferred.
- Proven years of experience in large scale energy infrastructure, with significant experience in Owner’s Engineer, Design (utility scale renewable energy plants or transmission (>132kV) and PMC roles).
- Proven track record in leading large-scale energy projects (e.g., renewables, transmission, hybrid systems). Strong understanding of Africa’s energy sector, regulatory environment and delivery models.
- Have built and maintained strong relationships in Energy industry.
- Excellent technical leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.

The Opportunity

We want the specialist technical teams to focus on what they are good at and leave the project management functions to the project management professionals. There is an opportunity to offer a wide project management and project control offering to our clients, to the technical owners engineering service. As a start, we are looking for project managers who can offer a range of skills from stakeholder, human, integration, scope, risk management, cost management, time, procurement, communication, design, construction, health & safety, quality management & environment management across the project life cycle. As we built confidence, we will grow this team with specific project control functions to offer a range of services on large projects across different sectors.
This position is based in Johannesburg or Cape Town.
Your Key Responsibilities will include:
- Develop detailed project execution plans to ensure successful delivery of projects. Work collaboratively with the Client and Arup team. Manage and coordinate the integration of technical activities to enable Arup to achieve its objectives.
- Ensure projects deliverables comply with design standards, legal regulations, environmental standards, and necessary permits. Identify potential project risks and devise mitigation strategies. Maintain relationships with stakeholders, including governments, local communities, suppliers, contractors, and team members.
- Ensure Arup delivers quality services to our clients. Implement quality control measures to ensure project standards and performance objectives are met. Oversee and report on the project’s progress to senior management and stakeholders.
- Technical knowledge in the energy sector. Ability to consult with others to develop the level of knowledge required for the role. Utilise the company’s knowledge network to adopt best practices in approach to work. Identify own training and development needs, ways to meet these needs and share knowledge with others. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Capable of prioritising and managing own workload using appropriate tools. Acknowledges and acts upon the need for additional support from team members.
- Articulate, providing clear explanations of ideas, job procedures etc. to others. Capable of working well with people at all levels. Ability to involve all members of the team in delivering objectives; professionals and support staff.
- Proactive in showing others how things are done in order to improve the operation of the team.

Requirements:
- Proven experience managing renewable energy projects, with a strong focus on Solar PV.

Job Description
To manage projects of varying values and complexities for the line of business, ensuring the company’s best interests are protected while delivering best practice project management to the client and other stakeholders.
Duties & Responsibilities- Planning, compiling and managing project schedules
- Preparing, controlling and managing project budgets, forecasts and expenditure
- Procurement management for relevant projects, including approval of project orders and ensuring delivery is in accordance with requirements of the relevant project, especially technical and time requirements.
- Managing the project within the scope of the applicable contract and application of best practice methods
- Quality assurance and control with particular emphasis on conformance to customer expectations
- Managing and guiding the project team, both internal resources and sub-contractors
- Risk management, including technical, contractual, financial, Health & Safety and schedule risks
- Effective change management
- Efficient communication to all project stakeholders, in particular the customer
- Matric Certificate
- Project Management Degree/Diploma or the equivalent
- Recognised training required by the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, Act 85 of 1993, including Responsibilities of employers and employees, HIRA
- Electrical Engineering Degree or Diploma
- NEC/FIDIC/GCC Contracts training courses
- Function related experience: 5 years project management experience
- Exposure to multi-disciplinary projects
- Experience in managing contracts based on NEC, GCC, FIDIC standard terms and conditions
Continuous training on relevant project management courses and material.
