Role Summary:
The Medical Laboratory Technician plays a critical role in supporting early detection and patient care by performing a wide range of diagnostic tests on blood, stool, and other specimens. Key Responsibilities:

• Perform diagnostic testing on blood (e.g. CBCs, immunoassays), stool (e.g. parasite detection, cultures), and other specimens

• Collect and prepare samples, including phlebotomy and sterile labelling

• Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment

• Conduct daily quality assurance checks and adhere to SOPs

• Ensure accurate data recording in laboratory information systems (LIS), in compliance with POPIA

• Interact with patients, explaining procedures and ensuring comfort during collection

• Uphold safety protocols in compliance with South Africas Hazardous Substances Act

• Collaborate with medical technologists, pathologists, and clinical teams for efficient operations

• Participate in CPD (Continuous Professional Development) activities to remain HPCSA-compliant

Qualifications:

• National Diploma in Biomedical Technology or equivalent from an HPCSA-accredited institution

• Full registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Laboratory Technician

• Valid HPCSA annual practising certificate

• Certification in phlebotomy or clinical testing advantageous

Experience:

• Minimum 13 years post-qualification experience in a clinical laboratory

• Hands-on experience with blood and stool diagnostics

Outpatient duties consist of the performance of a comprehensive review of documentation within the health record to accurately assign ICD CM codes for diagnoses, CPT/HCPCS codes for surgeries, procedures and evaluation, and management services. Review and abstract clinical data from the record for documentation of diagnoses and procedures to ensure it is adequate and appropriate to support the assigned codes. Code all complicated and complex disease processes, patient injuries, and all procedures in a wide range of ambulatory settings and specialties. Consult with the clinical staff for clarification of conflicting, incomplete, or ambiguous clinical data in the health record.

Basic Requirements
:

• United States Citizenship:

• English Language Proficiency. MRTs (Coder) must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C.
• 7403(f).

• Experience and/or Education

• Experience. One year of creditable experience that indicates knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, medical coding, and the structure and format of a health records; OR,

• Education. An associate's degree from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education with a major field of study in health information technology/health information management, or a related degree with a minimum of 12 semester hours in health information technology/health information management (e.g., courses in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, medical coding, and introduction to health records); OR,
• Completion of an AHIMA approved coding program, or other intense coding training program of approximately one year or more that included courses in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, basic ICD diagnostic/procedural, and basic CPT coding. • Successful completion of a course for medical technicians, hospital corpsmen, medical service specialists, or hospital training obtained in a training program given by the Armed Forces or the U.S. Maritime Service, under close medical and professional supervision, may be substituted on a month-for-month basis for up to six months of experience provided the training program included courses in anatomy, physiology, and health record techniques and procedures. Also, requires six additional months of creditable experience that is paid or non-paid employment equivalent to a MRT (Coder)

• Certification. Persons hired or reassigned to MRT (Coder) positions in the GS-0675 series in VHA must have either 1, 2, or 3 below:

• Apprentice/Associate Level Certification through AHIMA or AAPC.

• Mastery Level Certification through AHIMA or AAPC.
• Clinical Documentation Improvement Certification through AHIMA or ACDIS.

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

For employees who do not meet all the basic requirements in this standard, but who met the qualifications applicable to the position at the time they were appointed to it, the following provisions apply:

• Such employees may be reassigned, promoted up to and including the journey level, or changed to lower grade within the occupation, but will not be promoted beyond the journey level or placed in supervisory or managerial positions.
• Such employees in an occupation that requires a certification only at higher grade levels must meet the certification requirement before they can be promoted to the higher-grade levels.
• MRTs who are appointed on a temporary basis, prior to the effective date of the qualification standard, may not have their temporary appointment extended, or be reappointed on a temporary or permanent basis, until they fully meet the basic requirements of the standard.
• MRTs initially grandfathered into this occupation, who subsequently obtain additional education that meets all the basic requirements of this qualification standard, must maintain the required credentials as a condition of employment in the occupation.

Key Responsibilities

Platform & Website Management

·   Maintain and optimise our telehealth platform and website, ensuring uptime, speed, and seamless user experience.

·   Manage and troubleshoot bugs, plugin conflicts, and front-end performance issues.

API & System Integrations

·   Support integration of APIs with partners

·   Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve integration failures, escalating where necessary.

Doctor, Patient & Client Support

·   Provide responsive IT support for doctors and patients accessing the platform.

·   Train healthcare professionals and clients on platform features and digital health tools.

·   Create simple guides, FAQs, and troubleshooting documentation to empower non-technical users.

Secure Data & File Handling

·   Manage secure file transfers (SFTP) and ensure encryption of sensitive healthcare data.

·   Extract data for the onboarding of clients.

·   Proactively monitor for data risks and escalate breaches or potential vulnerabilities.

·   Ensure compliance with POPIA and all relevant legal frameworks in data processing

Compliance & Privacy

·   Apply working knowledge of POPIA, HPCSA telemedicine guidelines, and healthcare privacy regulations.

·   Ensure data security policies are implemented across all IT processes and tools.

·   Support audit readiness by maintaining accurate IT logs and security reports.

Training Content & Knowledge Sharing

·   Partner with the Marketing and Clinical Teams to develop engaging multimedia training materials (videos, infographics, guides).

·   Standardise IT onboarding processes for doctors, patients, and client organisations.

Afterhours Support

Provide afterhours support to clients and staff for critical incidents.

Ensure client systems and updates run smoothly outside of business hours.

What We're Looking For

·   Essential: Previous experience working for a medical software company (e.g., EMR/EHR, practice management, telehealth systems).

·   Diploma/degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or Health Informatics (preferred).

·   1–3 years of experience in IT support, SaaS, or healthcare technology.

·   Familiarity with telehealth, EMR/EHR systems, or digital healthcare platforms.

·   Strong skills in website maintenance (WordPress, or similar CMS), troubleshooting, and performance optimisation.

·   Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python for basic customisation and bug fixes.
